It used to be pretty entertaining watching these things going about town centres on a Friday night. Most of them seemed to be driving round half finished, primer everywhere.
Would anyone have the guts to do this to a 205 gti now, given their value?

That delta kitted mk4 escort reminds me I've got a set of clear rear lights for my mk1 sierra, and a set of 17" superleggera
What about polished half roll cages

I don't think the barry boys scene ever went away . Its not like the 70s custom scene when you suddenly never saw any cars like that anymore , i have always seen ' ahem ' scuffers driving about in cars like this - to some they never went out of fashion.
That is the 2000 onwards huge fibreglass creations , this to me didnt really start until the very end on the 90s and i see them in a different light to the early-mid 90s widearch cars etc .
I suppose a lot of them were built because you could get a job at 18 and get pretty much unlimited credit !! A 2k loan was big thing in 1996 to get a car bit by the end of the 90s someone not earning much but living with there parents could get more than 10-15k easy , and plough it into a chav rocket .
One younger brother of a friend got a loan and a Impreza P1 for his first car !

Some bloody hideous creations came out of it though. I was always much more behind the idea of hot rodding or Sleepers/Q Cars.
They didn't have to look like much, but the main point was it drove well and moved quickly.
Much better plan than nailing fibreglass bits onto a FWD shopping trolley.

It was not my cup of tea either , quite a few i remember would be standard 1.2s underneath for insurance . Still i respect the amount of hard work that went into them , weather from themselves of a open cheque book .

I don't think that this style of modification will come back in its original form, but you can already see elements of it starting to come back. As has already been mentioned with stuff like Liberty Walk.
Its a case of current styles merging.

When this is brought up my first though it always, "Yeah, I wish they came back". Then I see one on the road and dry heave.
Because I'm so bored of the current wheels and lows = done scene and I wish there was more attention paid top to bottom. But the Barry sheds are gash.
What I thnk I want is more custom body kit work in a simpler more withheld guise.
A big one for me is cars without a front plate. Now I have no issue with people running without a front plate, what does my head in is when they leave the cut out and/or screw holes so it looks like it just fell off! Get some fibreglass and filler and sort it out, its not hard, and it looks so much cleaner.
Also neons, I want neons back. Neons are cool. Have I said neons enough?.. neons.

It was just another generation trying to do ''their'' thing, the 70's Old Skool jacked up Fords etc, the same. As is now , with ''cambered '' lows and such like. Back in the 90's it was all huge body kit stuff , and massive boom boxes, I'm all good with anything be it good, or indifferent . If their was love in the owners intention, , I see nowt wrong :-)

Kids these days don't need to modify their cars in the same way, manufacturers have become increasingly good at making cars "aggressive" from the factory, small mods on modern cars give off nearly the same effect and in most cases the only thing you do when you change the speakers these days is make the sound quality worse. I guess people are just more careful when modifying a car which belongs to the bank.

Hadn't thought about that, I'm guessing that a fair percentage of newer cars driven by younger people these days are on finance deals. When I was first driving it save up and buy a cheap 80's or 90's hatchback. Guess that's not up to date enough for todays spoilt youth.

girl I used to work with had a 1.0 saxo, with a chunky wide arch body kit attached... but still on standard width wheels...
it looked utterly ridiculous!
