Morning guys. I have stripped my HC viva ready for some welding and eventually mocking up the engine transplant. I was always going to run a 16v XE with a Type 9 gearbox through a 4HA axle, and I have all the parts ready to go. But at the last minute I've decided I may want to go whole hog and run a small block V8 instead.
What would my best option be and what gearbox would be best to use? I would prefer a manual but i'm not overly fussy. I don't mind having to mod the tunnel but I don;t want to be cutting too much away so that nothing original fits back in place

LSx, T56. If that's too much cutting, SBC and a toploader or world class T5. SBF to annoy the purists.
Mark's Adaptors do off the shelf engine mounts of SBC's into Toranas if that helps.

Depending on the funds available, i would throw in a 350ci SBC with a TH350 auto box with a modded torque converter. You could then use a Hurst or similar ratchet shifter to drive like a loon if you wanted and also have a reasonable comfy regular driving experience.

Hi guys, only just seen these replies. Didn't realise I hadn't subscribed to the thread when I posted.
I rang to price up a RV8 and T5 box today from a 1997 4.0L TVR, only to be told £2.8k.
From what I can gather, the RV8s are a lot lighter than a SBC, although the fact that it's a Chevy does sway me a little

Rv8 stuff is getting thin on the ground and you'll maybe end up with 250 hp from a 3,9 . Lexus v8 is great value if you leave the auto box on and manual boxes from bmw are now being used with an adaptor plate as going down the w58 or r154 which I use is going to be 6-700£ in parts plus the box , All the yank stuff will work out the same if not more than going with the Lexus v8 but with a fair bit more weight

I'm just looking at Lexus V8s as it happens. Smaller and lighter than both Chev and Rover V8s with similar power. I haven't looked into gearboxes yet, but i'll take onboard what you have suggested. Cheers
