Ive seen top show winning car painters do the same in england.
Gob the hole car, over door gaps etc, block it flat then cut the openings out again.
Looks nice when done? Yes. Would I do mine like that? No.
The only cars ive seen done this was are show cars, but ive seen better jobs done without the layer of filler.

My mates a awesome body man/painter and he does cars like that. For a giggle we once weighed what we swept up after he used a full 25kg tub of filler on a car and it was 22kg iirc. It looks traveller but its the best way to get a car mirror straight, you end up with a egg shell layer done properly.

However, the guy who did that bedside and sold two of them.... And now has an expensive truck, guys like that are straight out £&€#¥!!
