One of the resons I got bob all done Sunday (the only day it didn't rain last week) was I went out car buying with my sister in law. Anyway, saw some modern tat, and some of it is pretty narsty, but we ended up in the Mazda dealer and she ended up buying one of those new Mazda 3 thingies. And I have to say I do rather like it. When she'd done with it in 4 years time it might well have to be Mrs Akku's new car. I could never bring myself to spend that kind of wedge on a depreciating asset but it was a nice little car and not as claustrophobic as most stuff like the Focus etc are. Especially in the back. I kinda dig that "hatchback/estate/breadvan" styling. Needless to say I would have happily taken an RX8 out of there too, so long as it was no more than a straight swap for our 626... Think I uspset the salesman when he overheard me say to Em, "yeah, I'm definitely going to have one of these.... ...in 15 years time when I can bag one for a grand"

Sounds like a good idea. Go out now and test drive the stuff when its new, then 15 years down the line pick one up for peanuts ;D Quite fancy one of those BMW 335 Ci (V8 twin turbo jobbies)....... when I am 45 in 2028. Pick one up for a few grand

Whilst the exterior styling is pleasant enough, when my missus was looking at one before she bought her A4, the interior was just so cheap feeling and bland. I think the interior is just as important as the exterior, after all thats where you spend your time after you've spent your money!

interior on these is way nicer than the Focus etc. Having now been and looked round all the moderns I feel qualified to make such comments for a change. LOL.

Out of all the family hatchbacks, the Astra is the nicest for me. I've always thought the interior of the Mazda was quiite bland.

I had a rented Mazda 3 as a company car for about 6 months a couple of years back and must admit I was very impressed. Very comfortable even on 300 mile plus journeys. Surprisingly poky for a 1.6 diesel too.
Deffo one to watch out for in another 10 years!

Just don't rely on the MPS derivative's headlights if you drive a lot at night in the country!

Urgh! I had one on one of them '3 day test drives' things, just to see what it was like... I was genuinely glad to get back into my Cav at the end of it all... Mind you, it was a CDi Cav.... lol Out of all the family hatchbacks, the Astra is the nicest for me. I've always thought the interior of the Mazda was quiite bland.

my sisters having a baby in a few weeks and wants a bigger 4 door car and she's getting a mazda 3. sounds like she chose reasonably well then.
you say it's better than a focus, but i'm sure i read somewhere it's the same as a new focus underneath, is that not true?

no idea. However the Focus feels cheap and claustrohobic, especially in the back. The Mazda feels like you are riding in the back of a much larger car. Plenty of space and light, much better standard of interiror fitment and trim too.

On the subject of modern cars, there's a new car selling thing in the shopping centre called "Buycars.com" or something like that, basically a sort of stall with photos of various 53 plate dullmobiles and a few folks approaching people to see if they can get them on a finance plan for an ex-rep Vectra, etc.
I keep walking past in the hope one will approach me and ask me what sort of vehicle I'm interested in, so I can waste their time asking if they have any Toyota Tercels or Mazda Montroses.
Sadly, they seem to be onto my game and give me a wide berth, probably because of my horrible taste in ties or something.

the mazda and focus share the same floorpan Aye, but the Focus is a steamlined shape with huge rear pillars and the Mazda is almost estate like and has an extra sqaure foot or so of glass in each rear quarter. Makes a heck of a difference!

Latest Focus is a vile creation. Quality of the materials and the way they are put together is non-existant. Plus the petrol one's I've had from work have been gutless tosh.
Lad at work has a Mazda 3. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Quite fancy one of those BMW 335 Ci (V8 twin turbo jobbies)....... when I am 45 in 2028. Pick one up for a few grand You'll struggle to buy one, it's a twin-turbo straight-six 3.0l actually. BMW 3-series are even more rubbish since they lost the 'wrap-around' dashboard.

I had a work associate comment the other day that
WA "You must be on far more money than me"
I unfortunately took the bait
BC "So why is that then"
WA "you can afford a BMW 7 series - I can't afford one of them"
I laughed
BC "yeah right NOT!!! It was probably well over a third of the price of your 07 Plated Focus so how does that work?"
WA "That doesn't count it's on finance - 5 years I've got to pay for it"
BC "Oh right then - I must be!!!"

May I be the first to post an 'anti' post.
My dad has just bought a 525d. The IDrive has had a fit, and now nothing works.
Today I finally decided to investigate why my 20,000 mile C4 shimmies to the left and right under braking from the back.
It was.... you guessed it, a warped brake disc. ON A TWENTY THOUSAND MILE CAR.
Shitroen garage confirmed this. Said they'd never seen the problem before and that they'd press Slough for a free replacement (not covered by gHey warranty).
They bloody well should pay for it. That is disgraceful - new discs at 20K. curse word's sake.....

My Rover 416GSi warped its discs at 20K. Non-warranty sir, a consumable. Try not to drive it so hard... tossers.
