Ok I will be honest here I quite like them marinas now Never used too, but imo every car has its day , I got away from the showscene four years ago due to so called experts opinions on certain makes of car, beauty is in the eye of the beholder as the saying goes, fords are now overpriced and not worth bothering with if you are on a budget, I like 90s stuff these days especially W202 mercs And quite honestly I don't care what "pub experts say" they give me great pleasure much more than my previous cortinas , escorts, and capris Go ahead buy a Marina and enjoy it!

Wow that's pretty damning! What do you mean about the underseal tidemark? (Sorry for being a noob! ). Why are vinyl roofs so bad? (again, forgive my lack of knowledge!!) And finally what do you mean by Gutless? As for the paint remark, you are right but surely that applies to most classic cars anyway? One must hope that the paint is legitimate and not there to cover up anything. Surely someone would have had to pay quite some money to paint the car up if it is rotting just to sell it on? Damning? - That's opinions for you - In my view just a realistic observation to provide a little balance. MOT check being only one year could say that it's been off the road a long time and just been put back on the road to sell on.

Just change the running gear to mk2 escort type. drop in a pinto and away you go..... then again, Buy a mk2 Escort! (joking!!!) I think they are great! Good fun, and if they were used in circuit/track racing years ago and maybe still are, then there is no reason why you don't press on and do what you gotta do! Good luck!

I don't disagree with you for saying your opinion; it's just I don't understand the terminology you used. (Sorry!) Yeah it does seem a tad off. And that oil leak ... heh ... well I won't really have any money leftover to buy spare parts.

To fill in the gaps/translate.
Underseal on sills and front and rear quarters and valences usually means one thing - Trouble in the form of replacement cheap over sills and covering rust especially when it spills over to the door treads with missing chrome trim and the fact that the arch trim chrome has also been painted over with black. Gutless = Slow for an 1800 (when new) 0-60 - 14 seconds and 95mph Poor handling = even the owners club magazine is called Understeer! Thirsty = 28MPG at best when that carb was new - worn needles and jets - very likely will have that down to low 20's I would bet the tyres are probably older than you are. No doubt it's not had an unleaded conversion so will need additive until the seats die if not already dead.
Never buy with your heart unless you thrive on disappointment.
If taking a risk - take a risk on something worthwhile.

Never buy with your heart unless you thrive on disappointment. If taking a risk - take a risk on something worthwhile. Depends on your defination of worthwhile. I have bought cars with my 'head' but i never felt at one with them, the cars i bought with my heart, yes some were unreliable money eaters, but i tell you what,i enjoyed every moment owning, driving and fixing them. Ok, i may have been in a position to be able to fix them, ( time/money/experience etc etc) but everyone has to start somewhere.

If you're just thinking of a Marina as you can't find a Lada, I would be waiting for a Lada to turn up, as the last thing you want is to "make do" with a car then realise its not what you wanted, still want the Lada, and be stuck with the Marina. Heck, you could have my Lada 2101 for £2000, but it would need towing as the brakes are rubbish and the new Weber carb needs setting up.

I genuinely have come to love both, with my love still yearning for a 2101, but practically speaking it will be so hard to find one. And actually that doesn't bother me; I still think the Marina would be really interesting! Anyway, as for Darkspeed, what I don't get is how you know that the sills have been filled and / or painted to hide rust. It isn't a rust free car; there are spots of rust everywhere on it, but a wire scraper and some rust removing agent, with something to stop it from rusting further is all it should need. Surely, once that has been completed, the car will be 'solid' and for my genuinely limited purpose (of keeping on the drive for over a month and very occasional use on weekends)? I should think that the engine won't simply stop working - not if that oil leak reported on the MOT has anything nasty to hide. Regardless, the comments on the handling are still, for me, worth a classic car. Ok, i may have been in a position to be able to fix them, ( time/money/experience etc etc) but everyone has to start somewhere. And I won't have any money if I get this car, nor experience. But I'll have two months to mess about in! Still so on the fence. I'm just so worried that I will not make the right decision. I just don't want to look back and think "you absolute fool; you should have known! Look at me now: no money left at all and no car!"

But they taught me about fixing stuff, and more importantly, how to gauge what i could do,and what i could not. You only learn by trying, and thats true no matter what car you have.

No doubt it's not had an unleaded conversion so will need additive until the seats die if not already dead. Never buy with your heart unless you thrive on disappointment. If taking a risk - take a risk on something worthwhile. Er, not necessarily. My Dad used to matt black sills and valances on his cars back in the 70s/80s, as did countless other owners after spending Saturday afternoons rubbing off the rust spots accumulated over years from stone chips. We tend to body colour those things nowdays but the 70s really was a time that style and fashion ignored, matt blacked sills were as popular as bell bottoms and clod hoppers. Its quite easy to filler rotten sills and paint them body colour anyway. Yes, they are not fast, they are not economical, they don't handle that well and they are prone to rotting out. Brilliant!!! That's 38 year old cars for you, if its still around its most likely to have been stored reasonanbly well or looked after. In the Working class heroes article in PC magazine Barry 'wizzo' Williams put the Marina he tested top of the pile. That should be good enough for us, he ragged one and it made him smile. Yes, caution needs to be the watch word but what you have said could be applied to a whole host of cars of the same era, not all Italian either. Ive still got a three page failure sheet from 1985 on a 1970 1250cc Avenger I owned, I was actually told not to drive it as it would probably break in half, a then fifteen year old car. Buy with your head, take a magnet, check the car under and over, make sure the engine is cold before its started, check for smoke, rattles and anything else and if you think its viable then you make your offer to buy. All of us have bought dogs in spite of doing the usual checks, it happens, we learn from it then, years later we make the same mistake again. We are human. Seriously, Ive bought a Yank but was searching for a TC Marina or an early 1750 All Aggro. I love cars me, in all shapes and sizes. That's the thing, love all old cars and the choices are fabulous.

Since I don't have the capability to go to have a look, let's presume I put down a deposit. When I go to pick it up, what checks should I do to see how bad the corrosion is? I'm not an expert, but since rust is a lot weaker than normal iron, then would knocking potential areas sound dull in comparison?

Hmmm interesting. So if the paint was very thin ... what would that say; equally, if it was very thick, would that be suspicious or not?

Stop fretting, its only money. Can always get more. Go and view it. don't pay a deposit first. don't agree a price first. Just go and have a look. Doesnt matter how far. Get a train. Blag a lift. Hitch. whatever. Just go and see it. If you like it and its not a wreck, buy it. Got to start somewhere.
