Waiting for bits to turn up to continue with brakes, mate Andy came round on Friday night to drink beer and eat cake, and he is going to paint the calipers for us, with a gun.... so we'll strip the paint off sometime, and sort the fronts and give them to him all together. Today we went to VW expo at Stonor Park, was meeting up with my brother in law (who bought himself a tidy beetle for his birthday at the end of last year) and then my sister popped down later with the kids. First problem was there is no phone reception at Stonor, so me and Tom went for a hike! We ended up leaving a message (he had no reception either) and arranged to meet at lunchtime. In the meantime, we went for a rummage. Scored a few bits and bobs, got a good rebuilt set of front calipers for £30, they'll need a clean up.... but you can see the seals and pistons have been replaced recently and the pads are new and uncontaminated too, replacement seals and pistons would have costed more than that... so seemed a good deal to me! Got a couple of old wheels for a tenner from a bloke who had also fitted 944 brakes to his car, but he'd bought turbo parts, with alloy arms and then had loads of problems making them fit, the calipers look better though, but you won't see them behind the slots anyway! Got a bottom pulley with timing marks for a fiver, it's a bit rough but should polish up... we'll just have to be careful not to rub the markings off And finally, for £2 a steering column and cowl from a 412, the column we've got seems to be a mix of VW and old rover, we binned the stalks and housing as they were all damaged, but we haven't got a steering lock, so hopefully we can integrate this and then we can get a steering lock and it'll have a VW key Tom got some buggies from a couple of stalls, and arranged them artistically for a photo And found some tyres for the slots!!! Then we had a look round the show, there was some nice cars, but didn't take many photos..... But saw one other rail Up for sale, for £3000 And this Front end is model Y, beetle back end, with (I think) Wolseley rear wheels. And a very chopped about body.... could look really good when finished! And the weather held out too!!

Finished a bit early, so got some paint stripper on the Porsche brakes and started cleaning them back to be painted properly Then when Tom got home, we stripped the pads out of the new front brakes, and using a footpump forced the pistons out (thanks MiataMark) it felt a bit more controllable doing it this way with Tom and definitely helped that the pistons weren't seized, as they just popped straight out! And the money shot, lovely clean pistons.... so a good buy for £30! We'd popped some front end parts in the citric acid over the weekend, So cleaned them up and gave them a blast of primer to stop rust And gave the disc a clean with a flap disc in the grinder, we'll change the discs no doubt, as they are quite pitted... but we could get it rolling on these and use our money on other things until we get to MOT! Going to try and finish prepping the brake part and get them to Andy this week. Then start playing with the rear drums etc at the weekend!

Popped round to change a couple of light fittings for a mate/customer And because it was sunny, he took me for a spin in this........ I know it's not related to the thread, but look at it, it's beautiful We met through motorbikes, but also had beetles in common, so had a good chat about the Fug and he said to pop round with Tom sometime and he'd take him for a spin, and also in his Chevy.... which was in the garage, parked to work on.... so this photo isn't worth toffee, except it's a really lovely colour! It's a 4 door 57 and is also lovely.

And we cleaned up the brake parts and the front calipers, and primed them ready to give to Andy, for painting

Got a torque-master to take the hub nuts off, really pleased, it was expensive but we were struggling because the hubs are loose on the floor and couldn't apply the brakes or put it in gear. Once the hubs were off, we had a look at one side, it's had a new cylinder and shoe retaining spring, and didn't look any worse than expected! So, unbolted the backing plate and test fitted the 944 back plate Then took it back off again and started cleaning up the arm Couldn't take the driveshaft off as I haven't got a splined tool to fit! Cleaned the backing plate up a bit But don't want to go too mad, just make it tidy Got some primer on the suspension arm to give it a bit of protection And hopefully have a go at the other one tomorrow!

Also got some cheap wheels off of eBay They aren't slots, they are BRM 4 spokes But quite like that look on sand-rails And they are 4.5j so like the difference in width Can't find slots that are less than 5.5j But they've been blasted, and don't think we can do a lot but powder coat them I think the copper is from a chrome playing that has been blasted off

It's been quite warm!!! The wife has been walking today (50km training hike!) so I've been driving around dropping off water and ice creams In between though, Tom has painted the rear suspension arms black And we've cleaned up the other backing plate as well This week I need to try and get some steel bar to make a couple of spacers, then next Saturday hopefully we can go and get them machined up and the hubs machined down... And thinking of trying to tidy up the spax dampers on the back, they seem ok, adjusters work and the chrome on the sliders seems good... so might try to clean them up and blow a bit of yellow onto them

Popped to see Dennis, to talk about doing our machining. He was machining one of the hubs now and then do the other one at the weekend with Tom (he was a bit worried about how well the part was gripped, how hard it was, etc etc) He called me later on, to say that it's a bit hard and he's not sure how well Tom would cope... so he's machining them both, but leaving one set up on the lathe for Saturday. We need to machine a wheel bolt to use to centre the new holes on the discs (which he said Tom could do) and drill the discs so still stuff for him to do

We've had a busy day! We went to see Dennis, and he'd machined the hubs for us, but left the second one in the lathe and he got Tom to cut the chamfer onto it (Not worked out how to load the video now it's on imgur) Then we needed to drill a wheel bolt to centre the new holes needed in the discs, so Dennis and Tom faced off an old wheel bolt then centre drilled it Then drilled it out, and reamed it to 8mm for a centre drill Then cut it off and chamfered it We then went and used a mates pillar drill to redrill the discs (but I forgot my phone, so no photos of that) Then came home and did a bit of assembly....... we did decide in the week, that with all this work it was a shame to use the slightly dirty back plates, so we (but it seemed to be mostly me) scrubbed them up and used some oven cleaner on them, then sprayed them silver So we fitted the new o-ring and oil seal, then fitted the backing plates Then the handbrake shoes Then the new spacers...... I forgot we'd got spacers machines too, 18mm thick Then the hubs went on And fitted new studs, then the discs And the back plates, which we nearly forgot And now we are just waiting for the calipers Next up, is either the front beam or rebuilding calipers!

He got a bit fed up half way through building up the second one... he didn't want to pack up, just was happy for me to finish it off
But I think that was a pretty full on day for him with learning about turning as well as the usual
