Tom and me got gift tickets to Silverstone Experience for Christmas, so we booked and went up today. Tom thought it was a good idea to take the Fug, it sort of was It’s Silverstone Classic this weekend, so it probably upset some up there… but looked lovely in the car park Returning for the drive home wasn’t quite as appealing The Silverstone Experience was a good couple of hours though, got to see a few classics in the car park but they weren’t letting us anywhere else though Other than that we’ve been working on Lupos in the rain Tom has been working on something for the campsite at the Gathering Next weekend we need to change oil and filter, give the brakes a once over (think the a-frame cable is sticking, and we wanted to bleed the brakes)

So, weekend working on cars… We’ve sorted the scrap and been working on Lupos, the corsa, the van, Lucy’s car and the Fug… but here’s what we’ve done to the Fug We’ve bled the brakes on the Fug and greased up the cable for the a-frame brakes as that seemed a bit sticky. We’ve also changed the oil and filter. At the same time fitting the temp sensor drain plug and the alloy sump plate, so can now see oil temp on the Acewell clock. Still need to fit the sensor in the oilway as advised, as a better indicator of oil temp (since the dipstick gauge was a failure at Goodwood) And fitted our number to the tank for VWDRC testing day on the 16th, hopefully better than the board I fitted in May, that must have cost us at least 1 second

I had a sump plug temp sensor on my saab, ripped that tab clean off. Admittedly you have a lot more ground clearance than I did. I ended up soldering a wire on to the stub. Some kind of shield may be worth a thought though. Dan

But there is also the catch tray that sits under it all, so shouldn’t get snagged before it bends the tray hopefully

Excellent if the wire gets ripped off then you have far bigger problems to deal with. Dan

Today was DragDay, was originally 2 days of testing but got cut short by not enough participants, so became a one day private test day. We loaded up Sunday night And got an early start, we got drizzled on as we approached Santa Pod, but then it cleared up. We got sorted, signed on and lined up….. and ran a 15.19 @ 91. We forgot the tools, so first run was running fan belt. Second run we dropped the belt off and ran 14.22 @ 95. So that was the 14 we wanted. Except 14.2 is close to the 13s Carried on running, really struggled to launch, dropped pressures a few times (ended up at 15psi) and tried to warm the tyres in the box, but it still spun off of the line Ended up running a 14.2, 14.3, 14.4 and a 14.6 so fairly consistent (with a 15.1 on a particularly bad start). Rhys took his Lupo and ran 21s, he had a few runs and went from 16.2 to 15.5 to 14.4… it was a bit of a shock after driving the lupo It rained at around lunchtime, but we managed to find shelter with some RR stalwarts Took a battery leaf blower along which we ran between runs to try and keep it a bit cooler, could get two back to back runs but it was getting hot then, so we’d have to cool it down Could do with a line lock to warm the tyres better, and probably some drag tyres to get better launches…. then if we ran trumpets instead of filters and a stinger so the exhaust is a bit more free flowing Anyway, a few photos, will load some more shortly And we didn’t blow it up, so no emergency engine swaps before the weekend

As far as I know from anybody who races VWs if you stop spinning the tyres you start blowing the gearboxes to smithereens lol

Seriously if you want to improve comfort, speed and acceleration put a full screen on it. I did with mine, glued 6mm laminated glass into a 20mm angle frame, had a hole cut in the glass and mounted a Renault rear wiper in it. Whole thing was removable in a minute. Glass was about £50 cut to size.
Then a vinyl top and it was sooo much more comfy too.

As far as I know from anybody who races VWs if you stop spinning the tyres you start blowing the gearboxes to smithereens lol Thanks to Darkspeed we now have a couple of spare fuses gearboxes And a set of shafts, a AD code engine case (which is a 1600 dual relief one) if I can find some cheap 1600 heads, should be able to build something from it I’d also heard that, which (along with the cost of drag radials at £250 each) has put me off But will maybe try and find a better tyres for next spring. These ones are date stamped 2017 anyway so probably not the best they can be

Sorry about the other stuff John - we still cant understand why he did what he did - it was not only the VW stuff but also a load of Ginetta/Imp stuff that we had put aside!
Not sure if I should say or not but we found the other 3 Aero barrels ! - We have given strict instructions do not throw these away as well as a load of other stuff that there was no room for in the car. If you drop me your address I will post them on to you - a bit of garage art.

Hi John, I had no idea of the back story with the Fug but I’ve just spent the last two weeks reading the entire thread in my spare time!
Damned impressive stuff, a superb build and brilliant parenting skills but I must warn you that I started Steve on the same path when he was young and now look at him…..good luck! 😁.
Now that the drag racing bug has well and truly bit and 13’s are so close what will be the next development?
You know where to find us, the kettle is always on 😎

What a cracking weekend, dragged the Fug to Shelsley behind the van Slight issue on the M40 when one of the front mudguard stay stress fractured (sort of been expecting this, and was warned on here it probably would… so not a huge issue, removed the guard and bodged it on Saturday with a cut down imperial Allen key in the tube It had started raining just before we arrived. So we improvised. adapted and overcame with a tarp on Friday night and Saturday Saturday was wet, but the Quick 60 was great to watch (with the exception of Alex in the Integra, but that could have been worse) and the rain didn’t really detract from the spectating anyway, looked challenging for the drivers Tat auction was hilarious, Rhys bought a load of tat and may have been egged on to win the last car up the hill Today started with sunshine breaking through, I parked the van as a beacon on the BNMAC stand Got 4 runs up the hill, with the only issue being the mudguard stay working loose again. Ran really well and the RR photographer attached a go-pro on the 3rd run, so tried a little bit harder and got a bit squirelly through the esses on that run, and then the last run too Took Tom, Ella and Rhys up. Will load some photos, GoPro stuff later Watched some climbs, wandered round the field, and then Rhys got to take the Lupo up the hill (it’s still a 1ltr, and a bit slow) but loved it Then it was time to load up and trundle home Look at the weather! Absolutely awesome time

Watched the livestream back when we got home... the Fug looked stout (we didn't catch it 'live' as we were ensconced in the retro parking and club stands...)

I’m old, the last run up the hill, my ‘IT team’ had wandered off and left me…. So I managed to start the GoPro at the top of the hill (when I thought I was stopping it ) and then filmed the return back to the parking and about half an hour of people walking past it, laughing and pointing at it!!! You know who you are Anyway, hopefully I’ve managed to get the 3 runs I recorded here

Now that the drag racing bug has well and truly bit and 13’s are so close what will be the next development? You know where to find us, the kettle is always on 😎 Ian Hello Ian, You can now see what a…. erm…. ‘holistic build’ it has been I heard from Steve we did much better on the weather than you at Santa Pod It gets a bit interesting/weird from here, Tom is just about to go into year 11, and really needs to concentrate on that, so plan is to mothball the Fug until after his exams. But he wants to go to prom in it, so I need to keep it useable until then without doing too much. After exams we might go a slightly different route for a bit, I’ll pop in and chat but there’s a idea kicking around that we’ll spend the next years scrap money on his first daily once exams are over (assuming he knuckles down… you reading this fugitivetom ) But I’d like to get it into the 13s before we concentrate on other things, so my plan is to run pre-season testing and see what I can do, but as cheaply as possible. Which we think means; Making it lighter, lose some of the excess, there isn’t much to it, but the towing point for the a-frame weighs a chunk (will find out at some point when we unbolt it) and see what else we can lose… maybe fit a small tank up front instead of the spun tank (which would make it easier to manage fuel levels and move some weight forward to offset the removal of the towing frame) the seats aren’t exactly heavy but it only needs one etc and there’s some weigh savings to be made with the nut behind the wheel too Making it grip a bit more, but without blowing the box to bits. A line-lock is cheap, and will be pretty easy to fit, or maybe just swap the rear tyres, or was told about PJ1 trackbite grip promoter stuff, so some research to do there. Aero, will remove the lightbar and mirror, we’ve got a full screen we can fit, but another suggestion would be to remove as much resistance above the bonnet line as possible, so maybe remove the flyscreen, but more likely the tank and possibly some sort of tornneau cover to smooth air over the engine etc, but again needs some research

That 14.2 at the Drag Day would have been closer to a 13 I reckon with some decent heat in the track... Big smokey burnouts would definitely* help.... *might not actually help, but they do look awesome

I’m really looking forward to see the next evolution of the Fug although, of course, I cannot possibly comment on the weight loss plan given that the seats for my MG appear to have shrunk quite considerably since I last sat in them! 😔
I’m sure I’ve got a spare line-lock, you’re more than welcome to it next time you’re passing 👌
