Today i inspected the front brakes, to see why the front offside was getting so hot. I got the wheel off and undid the bolts between the caliper and the guide pins. Surprisingly the guide pins were fine and moved very easily, so that's not the problem. I then realised that the pads wouldnt come out of the carrier. They were really jammed and i had to use a hammer to get them out!!! I took the carrier off and replaced the stainless steel plates that the pads sit on with new ones i bought. Glad i did. I also filed down the steel backing plates of the pads so they slide more easily. I checked the piston moved freely in the caliper itself. It came out ok, but was really tough to push back in, even with a clamp. I lifted the rubber dust cover back and there is some evidence of minor corrosion. I cleaned this off with some wet and dry, but really i think i will need new calipers. I put it all back together and it works fine now. I have new discs and pads on the way, so when they arrive ill fit all of those and renew the fluid too. In the meantime ive been using it almost daily just for the fun of it. My girlfriend even likes it and prefers it to my Lexus. It helps that she learnt to drive in her dads mk2 827 sterling. Tomorrow I'm going to the Rover SD1's 40th & Rover 800's 30th at Cowley, Oxford at the new Mini plant. 2 shows in 2 weeks. Not bad!

Today i went to the combined Rover 800 30th Birthday and Rover SD1 40th Birthday event at the Mini factory Cowley. It was a really good day with lots of British Leyland cars turning up, plus some other decent motors. One particularly cool car was a Citroen CX Turbo 2 long wheel base. It had the plush black leather interior. Very nice. It started out pretty sunny, but then became more overcast. It didnt actually rain though. I took a walk around the Mini exhibition which featured a Mini completely covered in cow/pony hide. God knows how you clean it, may be just give it a brush? General shots... Maestro's and a Montego countryman. The blue Maestro was the one with the talking dashboard. CX Turbo Mk10 Jag Cowhide, nice Inside on the table were a bundle of original dealer brochures. I spent a good while reading the back catalogue of Austin Rover products. So many cars, and yet so few do you see on the road now days. When was the last time you saw a Morris Ital? or a Mk1 Rover 200? or even a Maxi! I found this mint Tickford Turbo 800 with a number plate similar to mine, so when some space allowed i parked up next to it for some photos. Much shinier than mine, and really shows up how crappy my number plates are! Then some more photos with other 800s from the 800 forum. Then sped back south. This car eats up motorway miles, and so responsive. Strangely the radio picks up radio 5 live much better than in my much better and more expensive Lexus. Who'd have thought it? Anyway, I'm just realising how much I'm going to have to invest to get the body looking decent for shows. It really is pretty grotty when parked next to cleaner better preserved cars.

What a brilliant land-barge. if you want a set of original plates made then try these guys. They can redo them, a friend had the old style font and dealer plates made for his 89 Audi 80. www.dmb.uk.com/

I was just browsing the Rover 800 forum and found a thread dating back to 2013 here ..... www.rover800.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=10394And on page 2 a load of photos taken from Flikr of Rover 800's. I did a double take when i saw this! Yes its my car, no idea when or where it was taken. It has steel wheels and hub caps, so someone must have retro fitted the current alloys.

Lovely example, looks very classy on the alloys, much better than the hubcaps IMO.

When these first came out my boss had a 825SLi on a D plate. We used to borrow it whenever we could and nail it everywhere! It was bloody quick for a big car and the ride and handling were excellent too. Driven sensibly it was very refined and relaxing. However the build quality was absolutely dreadful, in particular the interior trim plastics. The cover around the drivers side internal door release fell off within months and despite the dealer putting a new one on it didn't last long before that came off too! Then the door trim surround cracked too and so it went on. After numerous electrical issues (and bits of plastic from the interior which ended up in the boot) my boss got rid of it after 3 years. A real shame to what should of been an excellent car. Hopefully the later 827 like this has the improved build quality the car deserves. Good luck with it mate, keep us posted.

I mate of mine had an ex police 827 hatch at the same time that my parents had their first 820 (a mk1 saloon in Lynx Bronze). The 820 was surprisingly rapid for a big car with only a 2 litre engine (certainly quick when you are 18 years old) but the 827 made it look like an 850cc Mini in the performance stakes, it was properly rapid!

Ahhhhh a free new car to abuse. I'm jealous! Yes it shifts pretty well. The interior trim seems to be holding up ok apart from some blistering to the dash plastic which is really odd. I it may be a bad reaction between the plastic and some kind of cleaner? The 825 was replaced after a few years by the 827, but i think its just the engine that was changed, interior's the same. Being a lowly Si it has less electrics to go wrong, and no ABS either.

Ill admit i was suprised how quick it was when i bought it. And i love the sport mode on the auto transmission. With it holding higher revs it the v6 really sounds good. Its got a crappy after market silencers on it that sound a bit boomy, but i quite like it. Chavvy, but not too chavvy!

I did some more tinkering over the easter weekend. My aim was to sort the brakes, as i have now collected the majority of the parts. However i got side tracked but other things. First off i lost half of Saturday morning going to look at a potential donor car on ebay. It was an 820 fastback in rough shape, no MOT etc, but apparently had good doors and wings, so i figured it was worth a look. Unfortunately only the front wings and 1 door was good, the rest were rusty and no better than mine. Despite having the same paint code the colour also appeared a fair bit darker which was strange. Anyway i dint bid on it and it sold for £260ish which makes my mot'd 827 seem cheap at £565. So i ambled back through the countryside from Worthing back to Kent, and stopped to get a few photos in the sun. Back home i started tackling more unsightly stuff. My windscreen finisher had a few tiny bubbles, which on closer inspection turned into holes. This thing it too thin for me to weld without blowing holes, so i just ground it back, treated it with Bilthamber Deox Gel and then Hydrate 80. Once that had done its stuff, i fillered it, then red oxide and satin black. Its not a perfect repair by any means, but will slow the progress of the rust until i find a decent replacement panel. While that was off i investigated why my wipers go off the edge of the windscreen. I was expecting to find excess wear in the linkage, but it turned out to be the wiper motor mountings having loosened, allowing the motor to move on its bracket. With that tightened up, its much better. There is still some slop in the system, but they work better now. Strangely they don't ever end up sitting on their rest pedestals, so something isn't quite properly adjusted? The cabin heater hasn't been working. The valve that directs the hot water to the blower is controlled by a small vacuum tube. I could feel the tube pulling or not depending what i did with the levers in the car so i concluded, along with suggestions from others that the valve had stuck. Kind of to be expected as the car had sad for a long time not being used much. I pulled the valve out and sure enough the piston was stuck. I freed it off and put it back in the car. It works now but only intermittently so i think i need a replacement valve. Whilst under the scuttle area i made a repair to the servo cover. Most of it was ok, but one bit was pretty frilly so a bit of chopping welding drilling and painting i put it all back together. Last thing i jacked the rear of the car up to see how the rear calipers looked. Whilst under there i realised that the filler neck is seriously crusty, so ive ordered a re manufactured item off ebay. Expensive but ive read trying to find a good second hand item is pretty difficult.
