A day off today so instead of window staring I had a better view. The plan was to make a start on the rear suspension to see how much it helps with the see saw effect of raising the front end. After first removing the boot carpet on one side to discover the upper strut mount isn’t accessed from the boot I removed another arch liner... And there she is.... Right onto the lower bolt... Oh great a Torx socket is needed. A torx socket that I do not own. They got a coating of penetrating spray ready for when I’ve got the right socket. In the mean time I removed the passenger side arch liner too, and also the front lip... Took a few more photos before heading in but pleased to physically feel the rise in temperature since last week, I still had feeling rather than just pain in my finger tips once I was done.

I think I prefer that strut style design. I would rather remove an arch liner than interior pieces. I have never owned a car like it though.

After initially reserving a full set of female star sockets from EuroCarParts for £8.99 I decided to just buy the one I needed from halfords for £3.99 - much higher cost per socket but less total cost.
Mrs Minty picked up an E14 socket this morning and I decided to test for size at lunch time.
Hmm not the right size, I'll get the multi-set after all from EuroCarParts, I picked it up in Mrs Minty's car, tested the E12, still not right, tested the E16, and woop woop both sides loosened in under 20 minutes - I'm yet to poke them out fully but the threads are completely undone so all looking good for the rear swap tomorrow as i loosened the top bolts yesterday so there's nothing really to go wrong...

What do you plan to do to treat the rot inside the channels where the torques bolts are?

Wow, not even 5 years old and so rusty. That needs some TLC. Normal ‘modern car’ issues. The rust is on the rear axle assembly. I’ve had a number of Fiat 500’s and new Ka’s rust right through the rear axle spring pans. Alarming. I’ve also had to replace front subframes on Nissan qashqais as well as having had to deal with rusty holed rear trailing arms. Nothing is built to last beyond its lease period :/

What do you plan to do to treat the rot inside the channels where the torques bolts are? I need to treat parts of my Acty underneath so will do the same to this in areas I can get to. Rust converter / relevant paint / protection wax.

Great tho looking at this picture you may want to put a drain hole in as well? that is a reflection of the bolt head in the bottom of the picture.

I had a positive couple of hours for a change this morning. Both rear struts and springs removed and the spring cups cleaned and treated with dynax UC to prevent further corrosion... Old and new... Both struts fixed at bottom... ... and both springs positioned in place and guided onto the top rubber mount ... No photos of next bits but I raised each spring cup up with a jack and fitting the top strut bolts. Back on four wheels... Everything tightened up and chance for a few photos... The front needs to be raised before I can drive it anywhere though.

Looks great that, is it a Scottish car by any chance?

I wouldn't worry too much tbh, it's thick steel on suspension. If anything on the body, it will be covered under the manufacturers rust warranty. BMW had to do a couple of repairs to my 5y/o e46 that was a Scottish car.

I am mildly surprised you fitted the rear height adjuster platforms, extra free lows removing those and just fitting the springs!

To be honest I like having the flexibility to wind the back end up in a short space of time prior to things like holidays etc and as I’ve learned from the front end I don’t need to gain any extra drops anywhere.
