I think the problem with your starter motor is that it's been at the bottom of the ocean for a few decades? Edit: I just had a random mental picture of tony robinson from time team digging it up in a field as an archaeological find ‘Old on sir. I ‘ave a cunning plaaaan

When I started looking into replacement starter motors before the weekend I found this one, listed to fit the Acty with it’s OEM part number on the part numbers section so knew it was a definite fit, pricey, but was an upgrade in output from 0.6kw to 1.0kw... I began searching the other cross references and found this unit too, I contacted the seller to get confirmation that it would fit other vehicles with the cross reference part numbers but no response although I’d planned to phone once I was ready to swap if needed. This was cheaper but needed the original sent back in return... And then lo and behold, the section on eBay that says “you might also be interested in this ...” which usually provides nonsenses such as an exhaust for a jag when you’re viewing an exhaust for a Nissan micra, led me to this... I’ve obviously clicked buy it now before posting this. I will be well chuffed if I get everything working again with me doing all labour and massive help from people of the internet. Thanks to all suggestions to date. I tried them all at various points last night. Stick around please if you don’t mind as you may be more help when I’m half way through fitting! Cheers

Good man for getting stuck in.
My first though when looking at that motor was it needed a new one!

I don't know if anyone has said it yet but your arrow with 'earth' on your picture is the exciter from the ignition switch. it needs 12V at this terminal to crank, not an earth. Unless there is another terminal I can't see. The braid into the motor body is the wire the solenoid energises once it has thrown the clutched gear forward to mesh with the ring gear. Don't earth that (fire will accur) and don't earth the exciter terminal either!

Don't earth that (fire will accur) and don't earth the exciter terminal either! Thanks for that. That connection really puzzled me. If I connected to 12v to test the starter it just sparked. Maybe that was more indicative of a dodgy starter than an incorrect connection? My plan when new starter arrives is to use the original connections albeit with a new length of 25mm2 cable directly from the solenoid to the battery - previously I extended the original cable but it was still seeing the same voltage as a direct battery connection any way. Thanks for info on the exciter though as that will make it a lot easier to test with a light using a blade connector. In fact I can test the switch with the starter removed.

Looking really good with the skirts/fairings. Are you going to go with a rear skirt as well?

After completing the edges on both pieces I came to the scariest bit where failure was most likely to occur. Cutting a rebate over the rear wheels. This would have been a lot quicker if I had a bit with a wider diameter than 16mm but I did the job, critical thing was getting a depth for decent clearance but to retain rigidity... My adopted technique was to mark up and use a guide board clamped to the piece to use as a buffer to control the movement of the router, with the edges cut first I then moved the guide board further down 16mm at a time so each pass cut off the relevant section. A bit like ploughing a field except always going left to right. A couple of over-runs but this is the inner edge that only the wheel will see, crucially no cuts over depth and lower arch edge is still intact. Another test fit and I’ve decided i need longer bolts with nuts on reverse side to fix it tighter to the mount panel. I think I’ll also drill an extra hole in the middle of the top edge. Height test... Perfectly in line with the lowest parts of the engine / radiator fan shield. Result. All tidied away before I swept up and pushed the van back in... A 9 hour day and I ache all over but the sense of achievement is second to none. Next plans on the boards are to primer, sand, primer, sand, paint, seal. Next plan for the truck is to get the starter fitted so it actually moves otherwise it’s just a funny looking trailer!

New starter has arrived... All tallies up with existing one except it has an extra terminal- top smaller thread. Big thread on left is safe to assume the same as original - main battery terminal. Big thread with tinsel lead is safe to assume is the same as original too - and I’m right in thinking I don’t connect anything to that? So the lower blade must tally with the original blade connection on the standard starter? Leaving the upper smaller thread as an additional earth point? Maybe? Hoping that’s what it is as I like proper connections rather than gaining earth due to being mated onto something else that’s earthed. Shall I seek assistance from a mk1 civic owner that this starter originated from? Cheers in advance

Id leave the additional terminal alone and just connect as per what you have said and try that first. Not sure what the extra terminal is but I'm exceptionally doubtful it's an earth. Starters are earthed through the block.

You can bench test the starter in a vice or with your foot on it so it does not spin....
ground the starter body (to a battery ground terminal). clip the positive clamp on the battery positive terminal. touch the positive clamp from your jumper cable to the larger (left in the pic....) bolt on the starter...it should spin.
If it does not:
in some diagrams I found, that other bolt could be an ignition signal switch. you also have two terminal spades that might be the ignition signal terminals.
this should work for you:

New starter fitted and she lives!!!! Yes! This is the first proper mechanical thing I’ve ever done apart from modifying bits and bobs. Well chuffed. Making it love again is much more enjoyable than making it look different. Massive thanks to all. Without helpful advice we’d all be lost frustrated souls in this world of silly cars doing silly things.

I’ve since replaced the cable from the battery directly to starter motor too, with 25mm2 the full length rather than my previous extension of the original cable, and she started again instantly.

Great news! I may have missed this, but what colour are the extended boards going? Body coloured?

I've been keeping this to myself but I can't any longer. This truck reminds me of Catbug.
