I must say I've been inspired by the likes of Stroke8v8 here on this forum among others on the interwebs. retrorides.proboards.com/thread/172969/1976-mercedes-240d-m117-literFirst step - here's the car with my wife. I picked it up about two years ago from a nice older gentleman in Ohio. My wife and I drove it regularly for the first 18 months. The original fuel injection system has given me lots of curse word. A diaphragm regulator thing burst, and now I since replacing it I still can't get it to run. I was never really impressed with the CIS-e on this car so I'm now amassing parts for replacing it with a Megasquirt II. First parts bought - some fuel injectors and a throttle position sensor. I scored 8 injectors out of a pair of BMW 318i's in the junkyard today. They are Lucas D3761FA and are 19 lb/hr at 43.5 PSI. I need to get a little higher output but I can start out with these. Also, the older fuel injection system ran much higher pressure. I can always upgrade later. I got the TPS from the same BMW car. We will see if I can retrofit it to my existing throttlebody. I also picked up some exhaust flanges from Stroke8v8 but that is another project.

Love the R107s!! I nearly bought a 450SL that was local in San Antonio with a 4-speed a few years back... given what I'm doing now with the manual swap, I kinda wish I had!

Pulled the CIS fuel distributor off tonight. I will see if the BMW TPS I bought can be adapter to my throttle body. I'm not really loving how the throttle is down in a hole but I guess I'll learn to love it. Or at least deal with it!

The BMW throttle position sensor was not a great fit. The D shaped socket wasn't deep enough and also not really in the correct orientation. Back to the drawing board so to say. Too bad this sensor it came with is just a wide open throttle switch near as I can tell. For three wires there's not much going on inside there.

Got my fuel rails done. Also bought a set of LS2 truck coils The plan is to set the coils up on wasted spark using a 36-1 trigger wheel. Have done some digging and a 75mm mustang throttle should work well. It can be had with a TPS and an Idle air controller. Last good news is that it is only 2mm off on matching the bolts.

Here is a drawing showing a mustang and m117 throttle body flange overlaid. I should be able to just grind out the mustang throttle bolt holes and she will fit. What a mishmash machine.

Got my LS2 Truck coils today and ordered my Ford 5.0 throttle body. The TB came from an Explorer. Not sure what the size of it is but the price was right and it comes with the IAC and TPS. I'm pretty sure I won't use this elbow but I can just remove it. I've got to make the cable linkage fit onto the push rod that the Merc TB used. That should become pretty clear once I get it fitted.

Now this is an interesting project . Going to EFI is not a bad move at all! Good to see you are getting stuck in. Do you plan to tune the car yourself or rolling road it? However, I've never had a car become stranded because of Bosch K-Jetronic, and bar one case it has worked well for me. The biggest problem with K-Jet is lack of knowledge since there is not really another injection system like it ; Bosch D-Jetronic shares more with modern systems than K-Jet. That and a lack of spare parts, which did seem to become a problem for me does make life tricky. My RST only really had issues as a) little of it had been replaced over the years and b) I was asking the injection system to do more than what it was designed to do, even with a 5th injector added (225BHP vs. the factory 132BHP).

An untouched and well maintained K-jet seldom causes problems, however they can be nightmares when "experts" have messed with them...

That is exactly what I am dealing with - my car has been meddled with and I tried my best to get it back running well. I had a hard time finding documentation for this specific CIS system. I've owned two other CIS cars- one Audi and one VW and agree that it is a pretty good fuel system and will run a long time. I thought I would have that experience again with this car but nevertheless I have not. Oh well, more power and more fun to be had

I'm with Jack on that.
My car really got screwed with when it was federalized to meet DOT/EPA standards of 1985.
On the flip-side the CIS-E on my 190E is just fine, though I'm still looking at EFI for that car down the road as well. For now, however, transmission swap and EFI are a priority for my 500SE.

Another decent day of progress. I mostly stripped out the stuff I am not going to use. That included a few feet of vacuum line, distributor and ignition module, some wonky diagnostics plugs, the idle air hoses and a few misc brackets. Goal next time is to remove the aux air pump and belt. I am getting familiar with how the wiring harness is routed. Need to start identifying what will stay and what will go. Here's a good question. Does anyone know which water temp sensor does what? There are at least 4. Two look like switches and two look like gauges/analog outputs. Also there seems to be a cylinder head sensor switch. My coils are going to need a custom bracket because the GM brackets are just too big.

On most cars, a sensor for an ECU would have 2 pins and of that era generally use the "mini-timer" connection (like those of a normal EFI injector) and have a dedicated earth wire going back to a single star connection point to avoid noise/"dirty" earth issue; a gauge sensor would usually only have a single pin and have its earth path through the engine.
Having had a 190E in the past though, MB like to do things differently though...
"Switch" type ones are normally used for things like fans (whether electric or the clutch coupling), or for warm-up regulators/additional injectors.

Yeah I had figured the same I just need to trace back what does what. Generally I understand but I need to get some specifics.
I also need to eliminate the EGR next.

Well the 5.0 explorer throttle did not fit well at all. The idle air unit wouldn't clear, the throttle bolts didn't come close. Evidently a 5.0 explorer and 5.0 mustang used totally different throttle housings
I'm going try to go back with the factory throttle body and mount either the ford or BMW sensor on it. I am having a hard time figuring out how to rotate the sensor properly but I think I'm doing too much thinking and not enough doing.

Because I have more money than time, I was able to find a M117 direct fit throttle position sensor online. Elbe.ee sells them. Price was a little high but hey, what do you expect for custom parts for a car that's been out of production for going on 30 years. Here is the sensor next to my throttlebody. It fit up well and uses the same plug as the BMW sensor I tried initially. Need to figure out how I'm doing the idle air setup next.

can you use this bosch air valve for that. Just plumb in up and down stream of the throttle valve and the ms can control it

I think I may plumb it thru the EGR hole since I don't plan on using EGR.
I've been told MS does not do well with the Bosch valve but hey only one way to find out.
