Guten Abend! The thrusty Volvo runs like a clock, nothing to report since Sweden-roadtrip. But....i have still a idea in my head about banding the OEM steel wheels....! This will be looking coool I had some offers from local company's for this .....but not cheap...and you have to wait for many weeks... Why not try to do this myself? So i checked my stock of wheels in the workshop and found something promising. A set of 6x15" Mondeo wheels... The center is only welded in with some small seams... Rivets on the Volvo one... First job:cut out the center of the Mondeo wheels... Than i drilled out the rivets from the Volvo center... Bolted the Volvo center into the Mondeo rim... Don't look too bad for a prototyp! Next:Center the middle section on the balancing machine, than welding together the lot... Watch this space...

Banded* steels here are super expensive. Regulations here mean you can only have one welded seam, so either weld a front and back half together, or put a centre in to a bigger drum. Makes it harder to keep your oem steels but make them dishy. The only company I've seen who offer the service nearby takes a new drum of appropriate size and welds the centre in where you want it, but they don't like using the centres from your old wheels so that comes at a premium. It would cost almost 1.5x as much as it would for my preferred alloys, to run dished steels.

Not technically banding, 'just' re-rimming and reversing.
However, still awesome! I looked into it with my Volvo 245 but the wide wheels I bought had very different inner diameters to the 140 series steels I wanted
At the risk of teaching you to suck eggs, MIG welds are porous so when you weld up the bolt holes 2 coats of seam sealer over them will do the trick

Great minds think alike. Saab 95/ 96/ Sonett centre and flipped 5.5J 99/900 barrel; started in 2017, still not finished due to chronic lack of time.

Overhere it's very difficult to get banded or re-rimmed wheels TÜV approved... There are only a few shops which do this and they tell you:Not with TÜV papers.

Hi! Today i mount a tire on the rim and fitted it to the car... Looks good to me! Removed the tire again, checked the rim on the balancing machine and welded the 2 pieces together... Blasted the inside and the rear, painted it with Brantho 3 in 1.... Maybe i apply a touch of silver in the center....or should i leave it as it is?The surface will get rusty soon....fits the look of the car!Opinion's? Have to order some tires,too... Greet

Don't forget the seam sealer!!
I had a set of banded steels that lost air so fast I gave up on them - until Dez suggested the above - worked perfectly!

Leave the wheels as they are. I really don't think you could improve it, unless they were a little bit more rusty.

Wow a colleague Volvo man! I'm currently working on a '65 Duett (Same modell but the wagon). Pic 3 years old when I just bought it. Was too far gone for a fast tlc (needed other chassis). But did the same job already with the wheels: 6jx15 used Mercedes beds to change them with one welding seam. Two years ago we bought an bigger house with a bigger garage so hobby projects slowed down very much due to construction work to be done but I'm starting up again now. Wil not spol your treat but make an own one. Thom
