1984 RX7 FB
For sale is my exceptionally clean, 1984 Mazda RX7 FB.
I recently got this car however have since realised that the time isn't right for me to have a 'second' car on the go.
As you have hopefully seen from the pictures, the car is in incredibly good condition - this was the one main attraction when I bought it. The arches and underside are very clean - and it hasn't suffered from the common rust areas behind the A pillar trims and the headlights. (as a side note, Trims come with the car, but arn't show fitted in images)
The car previously had a Ford Pinto lump in it ( a common swap) however the previous owner quite rightly wanted an original 12a rotary engine fitted. He got a Rotary specialist in the Bournemouth area to fit one. The conversion back to original is mostly complete however some wiring needs to be removed still and some additional water pipes are required ( currently the pipes bypass the interior heater matrix). In the process of re-fitting the 'rats nest' of vacuum pipes were removed, so some of the wiring that needs to go is attributed to this. The carburettor also needs setting up. At present it bogs down on full throttle ( it has been changed to mechanical secondaries). a simple clean or strip down may sort this - but a set up would bring it back into life properly. It still nips along though. As the car was and still is a running project, there are a few other issues that have cropped up and will need looking at. One of the rear calipers can bind and I think the master cylinder could so with a refurb. The other main issue is that the radiator cap seems to not hold pressure. It looks like the original rad, so I would suggest just fitting a new one ( they're not an expensive part!). It would also benefit from a new backbox. There are a few small niggley issues like the passenger window can be a bit sticky, the battery drains a bit after a week or so and the gas strutts for the boot lid are tired. Given the braking problems, and the naff rad cap, I would advise either tailoring or towing this car away ( on a straight bar.. it rolls freely). I wouldn't drive it until the brakes have been addressed.
On that point, its worth noting that this car has the later hubs - so they are 4x114. This means it can accept most the parts from the FC RX7 - so better brakes all round which are cheaper and far easier to source. (It also gives a much larger range of wheels should you wish to change them!
The car comes with a small box of spares, which includes the window trim, a few other odds and sods and a Gold Mk1 splitter which could be customised to fit. I've had a look and it suits the car perfectly.
Finally, despite the car being one of the cleanest fb's around, there is a line of bubbling above the B pillars. one side is worse than the other. It was something i kept meaning to deal with but ran out of time.
The chassis and shell in general are fantastic. The interior looks like its hardily been sat in too - bordering on a time warp car really. I have done a few large-ish journeys in it recently ( 80 miles) however the binding calliper is only getting worse so i would suggest this is dealt with before its dragged out for the summer months! I am hoping the pictures will do most the talking. The car was recently mopped however it is due a good polish to retain the shine.. It lives in my garage though so it away from the sun (whenever it decides to come out this year)... on that note, when the sun does appear, the sun roof lifts totally out and fits nicely in the boot ( under the very nice original pull out parcel shelf) - I've done a few miles with this off and its rather nice!
MOT is until 30th December 2016. I welcome any viewings or questions - I work during the week but the lighter evenings should make it better to see it in the light.
I personally think this is a fantastic little 'project' that could be up and running as a decent daily or weekend car with only a few nights or weekends worth of effort. Cars in this condition are fetching high numbers on specialist websites like car and classic and I feel this car will certainly hit those figures once the issue listed about have been addressed.
to answer a the 'insurance' question. I am 28 and insure this as a classic for around £140 fully comp a year. Bargain!
Purchase: I am aware these are worth a fair bit more in the states. I welcome overseas buyer however ultimately I will only accept cash for the vehicle ( can't go wrong with cash.. and there are many scams about.)
Finally its 'make an offer' - so please do, I won't be offended and am open to discussion on the price.
