Mk4 cortinas are surprisingly rare considering how many were built, less than 10 2.3S and 2.0S models still on the road. Mind you, i'm not one of those who will save something just cos its rare, if its rubbish (like the Horizon was for example) then i'm not gonna break my neck for one, I'm not saying they should be destroyed on purpose but the effort could go into something good instead, god knows why there are so many beetles left, they are horrible unreliable cars with a bad parentage, but there ya go i spose we all like what we like.

IIRC I think the Horizon thing is because they were only offered as 'Chryslers' for a year or so before Peugeot bought Chrysler Europe and renamed it Talbot in 79 or 80.
I bet 'Talbot' badged Horizons are more plentiful, although still pretty few and far between. I've seen two on ebay in the last month, and another one on the road two months ago.
Auto express did a thing on cars with low survival rates. The lowest survival rate was Marinas & Itals with about 1000 left out of just below a million built, and Cortina Mk4/5s was 2000 out of a million built. However this is only for cars currently taxed or sorned, as its the figures the DLVA have.
Austin/Rover Metros (not R100s), Cavalier Mk2s, Renault 5 Mk1s, RWD Skodas, Fiat Unos and Montego/Maestros were also on the list of the 10 cars with the lowest survival rates.

No doubt central government is quite happy to let cars like this die out. I don't think they really care - all old cars are undesirable compared to nice new cars with their low emission engines

I seem to recall that I recently saw an ad that Vauxhall were driving the "green " crush them and save the planet issue again.
