Smeden, To be honest I didn't think to look in the land of the Mad Vikings as we wanted something low powered to start with but that 142 is awfully tempting as I could probably get away with no rollcage and just a harness and raceseat. Problem is that it's a long way to Sweden and we are looking in France at the moment for another 2CV. If thats a failure I may come knocking on your door for some help. What are you exactly looking for? Does it need to French and less than 40hp?
Morris Minor or Austin A40 are maybe more conservative candidates.

What are you exactly looking for? Does it need to French and less than 40hp? Morris Minor or Austin A40 are maybe more conservative candidates. Stimabili Signor Bugatti, All it needs to be is pre-75 and relatively low power/low cc so she can go in those classes. Ideally under 1 litre with loads of spares and tuning support but with no scene tax. Looked at an A30 this weekend but there's a new one-make classic formula for them and 2 door prices are on the rise fast. While she's paying for it, I have to do the spannering so I get to choose and the reason for the 2CV lurve is that it's like meeting your first girlfriend all over again and it becomes an obsession. No classic I've got is really a road car and I really fancy wallowing along country lanes on summer days with the roof rolled back to the sound of the flat twin plus you can totally rebuild them from spare parts and make them go like stink if you want plus small kids wave at you all the time (most important). Some of the events she will want to enter get a plethora of Minis, Escorts and the like and the organisers pick cars to balance the entry and provide more of a spectacle. A 2CV cornering on its door handles provides more interest and fun than any number of more 'conservative candidates' Cheers, Ian |

What about a Hillman imp, bit more metal than a 2cv and a wee bit quicker I have had about as much luck with Imps as I have with Goddesses on the breakdown front. Lovely cars, fantastic engines, when sorted but I think God was really trying to tell me something. |

If you are serious about A30s then I may have a lead for you. Solid shell, but not been on the road for many years and probably not complete either. Not that far from you though..... PM me if interested and I'll have a word with the owner.

Does it have to be sub-1000cc, or is that just desirable?
I was thinking a Triumph Toledo - a bit different, plenty of goodies for the 1300 engine and a bit of related racing heritage given the Dolly Sprints went racing (and rallying for that matter)? Certainly won't be too quick either, right wheel drive and a half decent suspension to start with.

Guys, Thanks for all the help and great suggestions but at the moment we're pretty wedded to the 2CV route. So much so that a LHD one has been turned up in the Dordogne BUT I've just been offered a racer with a spares package of 4 engines, three gearboxes and a container load of other stuff. Going to wait to see how that one turns out. Pictures hopefully later this week. Cheers, Ian |

How about a fiat 850, berlina or coupe?
not too quick, yet sporty enough.
2cv's are also nice. I think they are more expensive in Holland then in France. But also plenty available.

A 2CV was resident in my hanger a few months ago and needed a bit of fettling. Nice simple basic engineering but with some subtle details - should be a fun race car!

I just did some google on the Mdina Grand Prix, isn't the same event Top Gear participated years ago? The one with May in a Ami and Hamster in the Lancaster his grandad didn't build? So it will be the 500-700cc class then? Barbot replica would be utter cool.  |

I just did some google on the Mdina Grand Prix, isn't the same event Top Gear participated years ago? The one with May in a Ami and Hamster in the Lancaster his grandad didn't build? So it will be the 500-700cc class then? Barbot replica would be utter cool. I don't think Top Gear has ever been there but it would make a great adventure for them especially with the unique Maltese driving styles. Hopefully it will be the 5-700cc class with the Italian Fiat 500 drivers, one of whom has been texting 'Bellisima' (Lauren) since last October. I really think she'd like to humble him. A Barbot would be cool but not look anywhere near as cool with a large roll cage. |
