G60pops. I had the following items done at JMG. I had a limited budget of £1500. CUSTOMER AUTHORISED THE FOLLOWING * BALANCE BELT RE-TIMING £140 * FITTING OF AUXILLARY BELTS SUPPLIED BY CUSTOMER £0.00 * SERVICING AND ADJUSTMENT OF BOTH FR WHEEL BEARINGS £140 * ENGINE MOUNT REPLACEMENT - £400 BALANCE BELT RETIMING 1 140.00 140.00 -- PUT NEW AUXILIARY BELTS ON, WHICH ARE IN THE BOOT - CUSTOMER HAS BEEN WARNED ABOUT RISKS SERVICE BOTH FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS 1 140.00 140.00 -- CUSTOMER HAS BEEN ADVISED TO HAVE THEM REPLACED, BUT -- OPTED TO SERVICE AND ADJUST THEM INSTEAD REPLACEMENT OF BOTH ENGINE MOUNTS £400 They also conducted a free geomtrey setting and replaced the track rod ends with used parts for free. Manual sunroof catches only allow you to remove/have the sunroof, they don't prop it open. So it is fairly useless. Total bill was £833 inc the dreaded VAT. What exactly is a wheel bearing 'service' anyway? New grease and re-tighten to spec? Surprised they charge so much for that... It literally takes 25 mins a side. Engine mount replacement seems steep unless they used genuine Porsche mounts. I replaced mine with Meyle oem ones in a couple hours. Do need another person to give a hand though. But then again I say all of this because I begrudge using garages for anything haha. Also on the point on the sun roof. I converted to manual latches and can pop the roof up. You just sit the latch arms in the sunroof groove. I much prefer it now

I did myself wonder what that meant in regards to the wheel bearings, so much so I got my service manual out and had a bit of a read up. It seemed to suggest a regrease and torque.
Never heard of it before.

I am really starting to give up with this now and toying with a new project - any one interested? Bites really hard on knuckles and remembers the severe kicking to be gained from bring another car home.... Leave it for a week and you'll love it again.

Thanks for the encouragment chaps! However, the car spat in my face this morning. I went to take it to work for the first time and it refused to start. The battery was flat. I had to jump it from my wife Audi A6. Now its just sitting there laughing at me.
I have had it, i just need to recover my losses and its for sale.
I am going to invest in a newer modern that just does what its told. Anyone interested in this car? Expect a full advert in the next couple of days.

Its a shame you are giving up on the car, it may only need a new battery and a Ctek charger to keep it topped up when not in use.

AFAIK JMG source fluid filled engine mounts, but they are not Porsche badged. Alot of people have found the Meyle ones sold by many outlets to be too hard and noisy when compared to the genuine fluid filled mounts. But some of those prices do seem slightly excessive, but not surprising for JMG. I personally would not have gone to him, but then again I am willing to get my hands dirty as well, and I do have a couple of good specialists on my doorstep. It's a shame you are giving up on the car, but OTOH I guess it is part and parcel of classic car ownership, and a learning experience along the way. Alot of batteries in old cars require charging. Christ, my RST battery would need a recharge after 2 months and if I am honest I reckon the BMW would after that amount of time. I reckon as long as there is not a drain, a new battery and a CTEK charger as suggested would cure that issue. If it makes you feel better the RST used to go flat within a week when I first bought it which the previous owners misdiagnosed! We'll see what happens but IMO you could have done the wheel bearings yourself .

Pity you are moving it on, although I think you might be as well off. It looked nice in the pictures but looking at some of the stuff you dug into, sunroof mods for example, it did look like a previous bodger had been at work. I think with these cars you have to be able to do most of the work yourself. Otherwise it is too expensive and hard to justify based on the value of the car. Some of the prices above are eye watering to me.

Shame to see it going so soon Ray, but I can see how those jobs could make you fall out of love with the car - not easy when previous owners bodge stuff up and you try to make good years later.
I too have the odd occasion where I think that maintaining an old Porsche gets on top of you, never ending lists of minor niggles, made worse by the dreaded Porsche tax on parts! I'm lucky that I can spanner my own cars, as I couldn't afford to run one using an Indy. The previous owner of my 951 spent £10k with an indy in 12 months!!
Thing is, whenever I think about selling up and getting into something else, I just can't quite do it............yet!
Good luck with your sale - what's next?

I think you're right, pretty sure John used to say that if the mounts were costing less than £100 each, then they were inferior. Thing is, I fitted a pair of Meyle ones to my 944S, and recently one to my 951 and I have no problem with them. I'm pretty sure someone opened up a Meyle one recently, and it was indeed hydraulic. My RH mount had not long been changed (in mileage terms) by a well regarded Indy, but at a later date it was noted that the incorrect length bolts had been fitted, and also the heat shield was missing - so no suprises it failed prematurely.

I am feeling like a total failiure at the moment - life is falling apart and the car is something that i could just do without. I am keen to sell up - so please see my advert and make a reasonable offer! I have lots of spares too. I will invest the money in a better daily driver - diesel naturally not modern - but defo not retro - something like a 3 series diesel or similar. I might be tempted to swap for a Mk1 MX5 or similar to keep as a cheap as chips fun car.

I had a mk1 Eunos a few years back, a 1.6 S-Special. Braced, coilovers, rollbar, buckets....I still look back on it as one of my favourite cars. Not very quick in a straight line, but so much fun, so much feedback.
If you can find a good one, you will be impressed. Peanuts to look after in comparison to a 944!

The engine mounts can depend on what you are used to and what the car came with. I for instance liked my old Mondeo on Boge dampers and Lesjofer springs until 20k later. On the genuine Ford stuff it felt almost like a brand new car, and I mean not miles away from that either ; I was staggered at the difference even if it did hurt the wallet. Again, a mate of mine found his Clio fine with a Powerflex engine mount ; I owned a 172 at the time and while his engine seemed located it was sligthly noisier despite what the forums say. As for the 205 - Jesus - but it really aided that weekend driver experience . I second hallsy's reccomendation. My MX-5 is a right hoot. You're welcome to take it for a drive. Mine being a UK model however is lacking bracing so it does shake a little now and again. But I do almost always drive it ; it's a lovely chassis with a very slick gearchange and an engine that never seems to hate being revved. Sure, I have the odd niggle but out of the box it's spot on . The handling on the stock 14" wheels is surprisingly agile and sharp all things considered, and the build quality is better than most cars I have been in of 25 years of age. Insurance is cheap at £90 a year too. If you are ever in the vicinity of Warwickshire give me a shout and I reckon I could take you out for a spin . I'm not miles away from the junction you spotted me joining the A46 at.

Yeah - I guess so Chas. Having only ever experienced worn out genuine ones, the Meyle replacements were a major improvement!!
I didn't realise you had an MX5 now? I had seen a mention of your E46 though - that rekindled my interest in them, lol!!
If I bought another mx5 now, I'd probably try a mk2.5 or mk3. We tested a mk3 before buying our S2000 and I liked it more than I thought I would - the engine sounds a bit coarse though!!

Ok, I bit the bullet and spent £50 on a new battery from ECP today. It just fits in the car and the earth lead was just long enough to reach. I now have a 70Ah 660 CCA battery in the car. I plan to use it to goto work tomorrow.
Does anyone know where i can get some manual sunroof catches for this car?

YES RAY!!!
I saw this on car and classic earlier, unfortunately.
There are a lot of them up for breaking at the moment, there is a chap in Enfield with a few for breaking. I have his number somewhere that I will dig out for you. Love the simplicity of my manual roof.
