Help please. I am looking for someone selling rubber U channel, rounded end and wide enough to fit over the edge of 6mm thick panel. Had no luck so far. Something like this, but not £142 for 10m! More like this would be better (but with 6mm slot), but they only sell in 30m rolls and I only want 2m.

Almost perfect! This will do if I can't find one with tapered ends. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, I know :-) Looking to thicken and add a round edge to the front splitter in order to protect people's shins :-)

Made the vacuum bag for the front clip today. Luckily, the lounge is just big enough!

How are you going to stop or reduce the vacuum bag from damaging the buck as the bag reduces in size under vacuum?

How are you going to stop or reduce the vacuum bag from damaging the buck as the bag reduces in size under vacuum? The bag doesn't actually reduce in size but it does crinkle up, which is probably what you mean. It needed to be at least 2.1m x 2.0. This bag is 2.9m x 2.6m so is plenty big enough. The sharp edges of the mould will be covered with breather cloth so as to protect the bag from sharp edges and spikes. The ends of the arches will be kept the correct distance apart with a timber rod as the bag will try to pull them together under vacuum.

Finally, the Lotus is booked in to have the wiring harness installed. I am taking him in on Tuesday morning, so it's time to raid the piggy bank :-)

What do you think the overall weight saving, from the original front clam (pre modification, just a standard elan), will be vs your carbon version?

What do you think the overall weight saving, from the original front clam (pre modification, just a standard elan), will be vs your carbon version? That is a very good question, to which I don't have an answer :-) My front end, due to the Vegantune flared arched skin I fitted MANY years ago, weighs more than a standard road Elan front end. However, until I cut it off I have no idea how much weight I will be saving. The carbon front should weigh less than 6Kg, including hinges and securing clamps. My guess is that my Elan front must weigh at least 15Kg so I should save at least 10Kg, but I am hoping for more. When the car is back from having the wiring installed I will set to with the angle grinder and will let you know the actual weight of the existing front end. Last photo with existing front end prior to being loaded into trailer for the short trip to the wirer's tomorrow.

Whilst I am carless and awaiting the arrival of the prepreg for the front clip, I need something to do. My second carbon fibre part (after a door skin) was a hard top. I used a Lenham top I had originally planned to use as the mould and simply laid the wet carbon over it. As I hadn't progressed to vacuum bagging at this time I was unable to form the edges that the glass is fitted to and the doors close on to. The roof weighs just over 1kg so is pretty light but needs a fair amount of work to make it work. I am, therefore, thinking of making another, but this time using prepgreg, vacuum and heat. I would have to make a mould so as to get a better surface finish. Also, the Lenham top wouldn't like the oven temps so would probably warp. My main problem/issue is that I only discovered a couple of years ago that the body isn't symmetrical! The passenger side is 30mm longer than the driver's side. Had the car for over 40 years and only just realised :-) Anyway, I adjusted the door to fit the wider opening ( which is where most of the extra width is) but the Lenham Hood won't fit without modification. My dilemma is do I modify the Lenham before laying up the carbon or modify the carbon afterwards? If I modify the Lenham I throw away £200-300 in value but I don't have to cut up the new carbon top. The forth photo illustrates the issue, you can see where the hood overlaps the door opening.

A woke up at 5am this morning. When this happens I usually start thinking about the car. I was mulling over the hood problem and I had an atheistical epiphany. Why not take a mould from the hood and modify that? Hood stays intact and I don't have to modify the carbon. Bloody obvious solution now that I have thought of it :-)
