are you the sort that reads up on your chosen make and model, carefully going through rthe ads, eBay, and so on, hunting down the best example you can get for your money now you know all the various problems from buyers guides, forums, etc. Not stopping or getting diverted until you have the right example fo that car you want. Or do you just run about like a headless chicken waving money about until you've bought something, anything and then go "OMG WTF have I just bought!!!! ?" I tend to buy whatever I fancy out of whats handy really. I used to buy every FD Victor, Ventora or VX4/90 going and any Mk3 Cortinas I fancied as well. The last two Mk3 Cortinas I owned I have hunted out specifically 'cos thats what I wanted. Thats said I nearly bought a Wolesely six or a Morris Oxford last time... But the yanks were all a case of what wasd there and I had cash, or could liquidate an asset for, or swap something for. So who plans what yto buy and who just ends up with random stuff? Whats the though process behind what you own?

I usually get bored every 6 months start planning what I should buy next make loads of plans................. then end up buying some thing totally different (usually ford).
As for actually buy the car I am usually a bit impatient and just buy the first car I see, unless its a complete dog.
So far I don't think I brought any lemons or have I just been lucky ;D

The latter! Must get out of that habit...
Did well with the H Van though - actually turned down TWO before we bought the one we have. Came very close to buying one sight-unseen which would have been very foolish.

the actual process of buying a car usually inviolves me saying "yeh i'll have that, then rushing to find money, having to go to the end of nowhere to rescue it. don't look over it, don't check it. just drive home. get it home be happy, next day be sad when i realise another pile of curse word is here. regarding finding cars to buy, ive given up i keep tryiong to think of what i want as i get bored after about a month...the best way for me is, just wait till something catches my eye. i am sh*t at buying and selling cars

I've always bought after a hankering for certain vehicles and about to buy something that I've been after for many years.
Quite why that hankering involved a Rover 820E some years ago is beyond me......

the reason I ask is here and a couple of places I keep seeing these "what car should I buy?" threads started by people. IMO this only works if you are buying a new or newish car which is still common.
Other purchases are because you always wanted that specific car (eg Delorean, Dodge Charger, Morris Minor, MGB, whatver) or because you need something to get you to work on Monday so its whatever you can find localish in decent nick in a weekend.
Some people have lists they are working down though., I find it freaky that someone can be that organised.

Actually on reflection the statement is only true for my retro cars - the modern shit I spend a lot of time researching what I want - test driving what I thought I wanted but then find I didn't like and end up buying what I thought I wouldn't want as I actually like it.................
But I am a smidge bit barking - unless others here confirm the same process in which case I am normal!!!

Sounds about the same as me BC. I'd never realised before, but I'm terrible at choosing cars. I used to have little or no choice in the company car I had. Then when I took a job with no car, I knew what I wanted and went and bought it. Then I nearly bankrupted myself and drove whatever I could lay my paws on for much cheapness, which generally worked out well. (Except that s0dding Orion I had! Euch!!), in fact that's how I ended up joining the ABS when I acquired my first GSI!! Then I had the opportunity to take a company car earlier this year, I have quite a wide choice and, (thankfully!), I couldn't for the life of me make up my mind what I wanted!! So I bought a nearly new Frontera and that's better than any of the cars I test drove!!

Err this is gonna sound weird but they find me!!!! That's pretty much how it works for me... wait to hear about something bargainous and see if I fancy it. Helps that F-in-L is in motor trade Usually needs some work but tend to buy before my current ride it totally dead or good enough to be saleable, so have time to sort the new purchase before I need it. Last 6 out of 8 or so cars (in last 5 years) have been aquired like that.

I'm one of those people who's asked the 'what car shall I buy' question. Generally, if I'm in the car buying mood, I will give myself a shortlist, and then hang tight until the right car comes along. I've had my fingers burnt with impulse curse word buys in the past, and I don't want them burnt again....
The 1602 that I've just sold was an impulse buy. I wasn't really looking for a car at all, but I had always wanted one (well a 2002 specifically), and it was reasonable, so I went and bought it. It didn't turn out to be a 'keeper' though.
Just remember that the best things come to those that wait.

Can't think of any car apart from the rover and focus that cost me more than 400 quid. ;D But yeah if something comes up, it's cheap and i like it i'll nab it. Regardless of space/knowledge/practicality issues. Worry about that stuff later Tbh I don't think there are many of the former types on here - they tend to have concourse/very very high standard, standard cars. Nowt wrong with that, just not my style.

Some people have lists they are working down though., I find it freaky that someone can be that organised. p.s. my chaos does have some organisation behind it. All cars i get are on a big list of 'stuff to have/kill' before I die. So it's not totally random.

Ive got a list of what I want to do, then I work out how I can fit it into my plans. Usually ask to find out what the common faults are then just give them the once over to make sure they arent made of filler and makes all the right noises and so far *touch wood... ooh err* I havent bought a lemon
