Wow, how could I have missed this build?  I love cortina's, bookmarked, sir you have done a truly epic job Cheers hamps, there´s a lot of good stuff going here, it´s easy to miss out especially when i´m sturggling to update regularly. lovin it!...that satin black is awesome, aint it?...Ive been using it over the top of rust converter on my suspension refurb and it looks great. glad you decided to cut that area open under the windshield. I would have missed it! JP You wouldn´t have missed it JP, the metal was wafer thin and had a couple of holes in it. Would look great with black D-pillars and tinted glass IMO. I know what you mean mate and i still haven´t made up my mind. I´ll do the A,B & C posts in black and then see how it looks like... Update 29.05 I´ve been busy sanding and filling the last couple of days. Not much to show for it to be honest but the door and wing are now a bit closer to being ready for paint...  Before i get carried away with getting it looking pretty again i needed to finish off the welding. Some idiot had fitted a roof ariel so i had to lose that ....  and i needed to remake the the drivers side A post to match the screen...    After welding, i´ve filled and sanded it back into shape and it´s not looking too bad. Once it´s in painthopefully nobody will notice that its not quite original. One issue i do have though is that the rear seat doesn´t fit properly.  it doesn´t look too bad in that last pic but for whatever reason the seat is too small. Folded down it looks ok but i can get my hand inbetween the seat and the inner side panel....   looks like i´ve made the ex saloon interior wider than the estate was. Oops, never mind, the extra width will be a big help once it´s finished and i can crash out in the back and i´ve still got the Granada estate rear seat to play around with so i´ve got enogh material to play around with and get something to fit. ....oh and the paint has arrived but more of that once i get the pics uploaded...  |

Our internet seems to be working again so i´ll update while i´ve got the chance. As i mentioned the paint turned up the other day. I´m still not sure whether i´ll be painting it all myself but i ordered a few liters so that i can get the ugly and time consumimg bits out of the way without having to pay a professional to do the whole lot I´d scrubbed off the original Ford matt black off the sill and gave it a couple of coats just to see what it looks like....   In the real world it looks a bit darker than in the photos, i´m not sure what you guys think but i like it. The plan is to do the boot, engine room, interior, inside of doors and wings etc. then put the car back together and paint the outside in one go, either by a professional or by yours truly. I know you won´t see it afterwards but i do like the contrast between the black and cardinal red.......  Getting some red on the car was a real mojo booster (which i was in desperate need of after all that filling and sanding) so i put in a late shift at the weekend and baremetalled the front and engine bay....  and after a bit of primer......  i got carried away with myself and tried out our Christians´ new spray gun..........   that´ll do me chaps By the way, does anyone happen to have a snapshot or two of the boot in a MK3/4/5 Cortina estate? Google pics is not being very helpfull at the moment and i need to start thinking about getting the interior redone. Cheers, Dave |

I´m guessing that as i´ve made the inner side panels from scratch my estate is a bit wider than what Ford built, after all it started life not as a four estate but as a saloon. Thanks for that link, i´ll go and have a mooch around but if i remeber right that was a caged 1/4 mile racer that probaly doesn´t have an interior in the back. |

I wasn't sure if there were any interior pictures amongst those but I have just found the ones above. Quite an interesting search as some of the really early Mk3 interiors were very nice.

Thanks for those pics mate, i think you´re right. The gap probably looks a bit bigger than it is because the rear interior side panels or not fitted. I´ll weld in the hinge properly and get the rear stops in place and then have another look, i think it´ll be alright though. Meet you at Classic Ford at the pod next year?... you on the strip, me on the camping site with a boot full of german beer  Update 11.06 I don´t have much to show for it but i´ve been sanding down the bodywork the last few weeks.  We resprayed our Christian´s MK1 Fiesta a few years back and you could tell afterwards that the primer was done in different colours so to prevent that happening again i bought some brown/red filler to go on top of the grey primer so i´ve been redoing all the panels...  I need to redo the right hand side and the roof but at least i´ll have it all in one colour once i´m done and hopefully the paintjob will turn out ok.... ..and as i can only do one side at a time the Cortina got a breath of fresh air this afternonn as i needed to turn it round....   and whilst i was outside i got the satin matt black tin of paint out and got the front end looking half decent again...  getting there slowly, another couple of weeks and it´ll hopefully be ready for paint . cheers, Dave |

JP ..especially when you´re not very good at it and need a couple of attempts to get it looking half decent Update 18.06 I´ve got the right hand side sanded back again and have given it and the roof a coat of spray filler......   I´ll need to wet sand it all with 400 grain but i´ll have to put the doors back on first.. Before i can do that though i got carried away again .....   I do like that colour, Cheers, Dave |

The gleam of the red must be a proper mojo booster ...you´re right and i need every bit i can get. Mojo is as low at the moment but there´s light at the end of the tunnel. I had thought about just handing it over to the local sprayer but they´re expensive and i´m a tight old git so want to keep the price down by prepping it as good as i can. This is so awesome. Can't wait for the final result! Have you considered doing a similar backend-swap to your C123? Hi Felix, not a bad idea mate but i´d be asking for trouble.....to be honest i was looking at W126´s the other day with a view to making an estate but i´d rather build a W123 cabrio first I´m almost sure he has, that ford is just training for the benz job, finger exercise. As the Coupe has a shorter wheelbase than the Estate i´m not to sure if the "shooting Brake" idea would look good using a Coupe as a base. Chopping and 2 dooring an estate would probably look better and anopther bonus is that in the paperwork it´d be an estate Update 25.06 Sorry for not updating that often but there´s no point showing you loads of boring pics of me sanding panels and turning the garage floor brown again.... I´ve knocked out all the dents in the roof, welded up the hole from the old ariel and filled, sanded, filled, sanded.....i´m sure you get the picture   For some unknown reason the front wing didn´t want to fit properly so i spent the best part of a whole day playing around with the door/wing gap but got there in the end....  So with the tailgate back in place and looking good, the last panel that needs sorting is the bonnet....  ...rustwise it´s ok and as it´s the original one that came with the car i´d like to keep it, so i´ll knock out the dents, fill, sand fill sand etc......  I had a stroke of luck the other day,  ...a 3.44 V6 axle came up on ebay and i was able to grab a bargain..along with some V6 front springs, a propshaft that´ll fit the 5 speed box and some other goodies. Best part was it was local too, so chuffed with that, all i need now is a decent interior. Whilst waiting for the filler to dry i´ve been playing around with the roofrack off the Granada.  Now obviously it´s not a straight swap so i´ve reduced the width by about 6 inches to get it to fit the Taunus.  I haven´t drilled any holes yet as i´m not sure whether i´ll be fitting it or not....  with a fresh coat of satin black colourwise it´ll fit in nice with the rest but i´m just not sure whether it works on the Taunus/Cortina. Sometimes less is more....what do you guys think? Cheers, Dave |
