agree, plus theres no load on the engine.
if you are getting through the static test by the skin of your teeth, probably gonna get nabbed on the driveby

Thanks for all the comments and ideas.
I have created my own "db killer" and managed to get the sound level down to 96db (from 105db!). No pictures I'm afraid, but it was a curved pipe which fits in the back of the tail pipe with a perforated pipe inside stuffed with wire wool. The car is noticeably quieter but doesn't seem to have lost any power, although I can now hear it pinking slightly - I don't know whether this is just 'cos I couldn't hear it over the exhaust or something caused by greater back pressure.
I'm going to go down to Goodwood to get the sound level tested - as I don't want to find my sound level meter is inaccurate when I get to the track day!

Is there any official moto-x practise tracks near you, some of them will have a Db meter, especially if they are anywhere near residential properties, they should be give you a measurement for the price of a drink...

Are you sure you measured the noise with the correct dB-scale weighting? There is A B c and D scale - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-weighting I don't know what weighting the track uses, but as you can see low frequency noise has quite a marked difference in the different scales

Thanks for all the info and ideas folks. I'm popping down to Goodwood on Friday to get them to check the noise level - that way I know its being checked by the same meter and same people who will do it on the day - so no chance of issues due to different equipment, db weighting etc.
Wish me luck!

Well, I went down to Goodwood on Friday - and a very nice Lady called Judy checked the noise level on the Cortina and.......it passed!
It was apparently not even hitting 90dB, and that was without me fitting my super noise reducing tail pipe! I guess the Maplin cheapy noise level meter was not that accurate!
So all is well!
Thanks for all the help along the way folks!

arent some people these day making the tip of the exhaust point to the floor in the hope it absorbs some noise?

You've solved things but for the record if someone ever needs noise reduction somewhere, I've seen a lot of these SuperTrapp baffles at race tracks in NA. Easy to add on & remove when needed. ![](http://www.supertrapp.com/images/product_sections/27.jpg)

Supertrap is a guaranteed way of reducing noise , used one on a bloody AC Cobra to get it low enough for goodwood , nothing else worked [ short wheel base to fit silencer in ].
As a note, you can get a Db meter app for your phone instead of buying a meter.

Are those DB meter apps roughly accurate? I'd be interested to see what levels my Rover is at.
