Yeah to be honest I wouldn't be too happy about that. Why not get a Rover 800 16v turbo. Cheaper, smoother, more powerful, and no 'historical significance' issues.
Not the lightest though. The Raleigh Grifter suspension parts under your Marina may not be too happy.

Good plan!!!! Isn't the engine fairly similar to that used in late Itals? Does this mean it will slot straight in? Buying a car at that price just for the engine seems a little silly - surely you can find a terminally rusty one with functioning grubby bits for less than that? Marina "legendary" understeer, coupled to Maestro Turbo "legendary" torque-steer. Could be interesting! On paper, though it seems like a commendable idea!

The ports are on the opposite side of the cylinder head on the monty compared to the ital, so you would have to muck about with the exhaust and that.
Saying that, thats not too difficult is it.
But you can do better I reckon. Turbos and SU carbs are not a very good match in my rather unsubstantiated and bigoted opinion.

HAHAHAHA!. ;D. ;D. yeah - this is what holds up progress on any mods to be honest. i keep looking at the car and thinking, good condition, get rid and buy something easy to mod & then my other brain goes "chicken! who else has modded a marina!" i really want to make it handle & move some just as a told you so, i think they're a really good looking car (stop laughting!) i think it'd have to go off the road & have a new front set up with something from a car with a more conventional susp setup. cortina? and then we can talk about serious power. RATDAT has offered his expert advice on J engines which i like alot!

This is the brain you listen to,... your Marina looks damn cool! You could go light smaller J engine and shove it as far back in the engine bay as possible. Hmmm how hard would it be to move the bulk head back a bit??? Feeling brave?

I've got a feature in an old Fast Car of a Montego'd Marina...I'll try and dig it out.

I'm sure the Marina's handling could be sorted fairly easily. If I remember rightly they have a collosal front anti rollbar fitted as standard (1" thick or thereabouts) and that, without decent rear roll control will cause oversteer for a start.
Incresing the negative camber on the front shouldn't be too difficult either..you could possibly lengthen the bottom arms. Changine the spring rate will be trickier with it being torsion bar on the front but not impossible.
I wouldn't got for the Meastro turbo lump mainly because it isn't very common. It won't be long before it's hard to get parts for it I expect. No idea what they are like for reliability though.
If you just want the car quicker without any complication then a CA20S (SOHC 2.0L) from a FWD Bluebird might be good. They are carb so no messing with EFI and they are very compact and lightwieght. They are also pretty common in scrappys and easy to get bits for. You can mount one RWD using a Nissan Silvia gearbox and mounts. Stock they give 105bhp and 120ft/lb which isn't bad and you can probably bump that up a bit with a cam from a turbo and a change of carb.

I think it'd be a shame to rip apart a tidy Maestro, I've taken a shine to them lately! Saw a really nice bright red Montego turbo the other day.

If the Maestro was really shagged then pulling the engine would make sense, but if it's restorable I wouldn't think it'd be economical to buy it just for the motor. There are stacks of Rover 820 Turbos around which have the added benefit of EFI, which I would think are better suited and easy to get hold of. Otherwise how about a Rover V6 from the 800? They are a bit big mind. Whatever you choose it'll be an interesting project!!

Seeing as the marina is pretty much a re-skinned minor there should be loads of suspension upgrades out there, as for engines, Rover K series anyone???

talking of rover v6 in the 800?
Is that the Kv6? or something different?
Kv6 is meant to be quite good (apologies if thats the same as in the 800)

I saw this in an MGB at the NEC afew weeks ago. I the lastest PPC magazine it shows you how to fit a Rover M16 engine in to a B with a sherpa 5-speed. The M16 is 140bhp as standard, reliable, cheap and common as muck plus because its derived from the o-series, its similar to the B series engine that was fitted to the marina so an easy swap.
