Thread duly bookmarked! If any of you finds a car near Nantes they'd like me to check out, please do tell me I'd be more than happy to oblige. It's like I'm buying the car, but I don't even have to pay for it

When I was a kid I read a book about a couple of guys competing in a European rally, possibly the Monte Carlo, who had some "bad men" after them who had hidden a load of diamonds in their rally car. It was a great book but the hero for me was the Renault Dauphine that they were driving so I guess you could say that they are a childhood crush. At the end of the day whatever you do it with it,it will still be a Dauphine and that's all that matters. They rock

Knowing me its in the loft in a box somewhere. Sorry for the thread diversion - Great car and project - Also love these quirky Gallic auto's Andrew

The VW powered one is awesome. A 63 I believe, original UK RHD car. Very cleverly built, it had a tube chassis built into the factory monocoque but using a VW front beam and a ladder bar rear end with the VW gearbox mounted using motorplates. Engine started as a 1968cc motor on 48IDAs, then replaced with a 2109 with an old school Rajay turbo. Pretty sure Lee ran down into the 10s with that combination. I love it!

Read the book here also. Never heard of the Disney movie though - and thought i knew pretty much all Disney movies. IIRC there is a Herbie the love bug movie with a diamond also. Monte Carlo?

So not much has happened yet. I haven't started pouring all my non existent spare time into it as I'm waiting until i can get her registered here in the UK. A wise move i think as i don't want to end up with a car i cant do much with. As you may see above the car runs, leaks like a sieve but started up with minimal fuss and a squirt of WD40 down the carb. A fresh battery was purchased locally and turned her over very well. The starter does currently seem to be the only working electrics on the car. A great start to the project i think as a good running engine is always a bonus.
The paper work was all sent off to the DVLA and just over a week later i had a reply. Basically asking for a cover letter explaining the lack of French Log Book. This was quickly typed up and posted off on sat, They received and signed for it this morning so hopefully i will have another reply by mid next week. A big fingers crossed for a V5 or a letter saying one is on its way.
Not much has happened to the car due to this, iv'e removed the rear bumpers and will hopefully get the fronts off too at somepoint. I currently intend to run without them. I have also got some new rear lenses that i have fitted up, still need to source a couple of rubber seals for them but they definitely freshen her up a little. I will try and get a few pics up soon.

Second reply from the DVLA came through this morning. Rejected application based on the dating certificate grrrr.
The first one was sent back with a general DVLA letter. I replied stating each piece of info that was requested and sent it all back. This time they have replied saying that the dating certificate needs some more information. I have emailed the chap who has helped me out so far to see if he can write up a second certificate stating how he matched my car to the guide book to verify its the vehicle. This is even though ive included the same pictures to the DVLA showing the matching information. I'm running out of cover on the car as ive been given 45 days cover on the vin number after that it needs to be registered...

that flat four needs to be a roaring v8 . nice cool looking car . good luck mate. Progress is only made by those prepared to have the vison and see it through to completion i.e running and driving ,and beyond. in my eyes a custom /retro car is never truly ever finished

He said all he used to do was get an owners club to date it and that was that.... Now he seems to have to have at least three clubs write headed letters for him, and possibly a visit to Swansea, and even then his most recent one has been offered a Q plate after all that! , Was registed in England in 1934 but lost its plate as it was off the road since 50's , And the dvla want to give it a Q plate.... weird....

Oh dear, doesn't bode well. They do seem to be making it difficult. this time round i have to take rubbings of the vin plate to send to the chap writing the certificate. I think there were only 2 clubs that were listed for renaults and only one had the details required, i really do hope they don't ask for more than one club to do it.
