Good suggestions there Mr Popper. Both FWD, I had it in my head that it had to be RWD for some reason, but that opens up all sorts of possibilities. Thanks, although the Thunderbird is RWD, and is quite well set up, and due to having independent suspension all round it even handles well. Plus, you can get them in both V6 & V8, and some were even Supercharged Oh the shame. I lived in the US and Canada for 11 years and I always thought they were FWD! Honestly don't know why.

I know I'll probably get argued with about it being a coupe, but what about a mk3 capri Love the idea,,,, but ford scene tax?? For the budget there's better cars than paying thru the nose for a rotten old car,,, I'd suggest a good clk merc plenty of nice ones about for sensible money... I know you said 80s but some 90s stuff is worth considering, I've moved more into 90s cars more in the last few years and prefer them tbh

Don't know if they did them over here, but what about a Mazda 626 or 929? Other than that; prelude, Nissan Sunny B12? Have a look on Autoscout24, all European, incredibly cheap, not sure on import costs though. Seriously though, as a retro car site, I recommend looking at that site, some awesome stuff!

If it were me, I'd be looking at the following:
Porsche 924 BMW E36
IMHO you could get a half decent 328i for decent money and do a few upgrades yourself. I liked my 323i but it did seem a little limp of wrist when initially setting off.
You say that you wish to do an engine conversion. Is that planned into your £2k budget? If no, how much were you going to put aside for it?

the best Elan Plus 2 you can afford. assume by your profile picture you bought that project 911? sorry just interested and i saw you didnt have a tread of it =) I did indeed, it took a year from finding out about it to owning it. I should start a build thread really.

Another vote for Mk1 Cavalier here! (or early Manta B) although I'm clearly biased 2K would get you a decent one too. Slight less boxy than the later Mantas due to lack of body kit. Easy to work on, parts are still available, LOADS of upgrade potential, 70's cool and RWD. What's not to love?!!

My first thought was Consul Capri but your budget might not allow this. They're rare as poor quality wobbly children's play pony curse word here and I'm guessing mostly rusted into oblivion there but they're the coolest English Ford coupe I can think of and I like Fords.
