I'm a sucker for a 244. The run out Torslander models fascinate me, the car designed to last 1 million miles.
Estate prices are now climbing but not so long back a good useable Torslander was around the £2k mark and that is an absolute bargain. Mileage is for the most part irrelevant, just make sure the history is all as it should be. I'd normally run for the hills with a mileage the wrong side of 200k but not on a well maintained 244.
Tried to buy a late 244 estate last year, it was on an L plate, was the wrong side of 200k, and felt fresh as a daisy. The interior was like new. A dealer offered £200 on p/x, and I said when he sold it I'd beat the dealer price. The only issue was it had been used over fields when new (farmers, you've got to love 'em!) and was a little rustier than you'd expect thanks to doubling up as a Toyota Hilux but was still happily sailing through its MOT. Ended up becoming a workhorse for someone, when he sold it I had neither the space nor the money and someone had put in a decent offer for it, more than I'd have paid.

Some of us have always considered Volvos and Ladas as having potential. Along with everything else! :-)
Get that Lada lowered!

I always thought Volvos (and Saabs) held a weird position between the everyman cars like your Fords and Vauxhalls and the premium Germans brands back in the 70s/80s. VW kind of fitted in the same slot, known for build quality, design and engineering but not having the luxury tag like BMW and Mercedes. A Swedish car was always the leftfield choice, you appreciated good dedign, you understood engineering beyond a few marketing buzzwords, or you were doing ok but didn't feel you had to flaunt it.
For that reason alone Volvos are, and always will be, cool cars.
Oh, and forgot to add, they made estates cool.

I've always had a thing for volvos. My love affair with Volvo started years ago, my grandad had a 740 GL, it was a fantastic car, I can remind him taking me out in it and driving at 40mph in a 60 zone with loads of cars trailing behind us, I used to like pushing the seat warmer buttons and watching my grandpa grow uncomfortably hot in his seat before realising. That car was a great car and he had it for years, one of its best qwerks was that for the first few miles the speedo wouldn't work and I can always remember it havering that Volvo interior smell. I can remember divvying up my grandads positions with my cousin and deciding who got what if he died, of course I got the car! - luckily he didn't die (and is still going strong) but the Volvo did, it failed an MOT on corrosion so an appointment was booked at the scrapyard, he did save me the front number plate before it went. And that's how I ended up buying one I was browsing eBay and I found a nice 244 saloon (I've always preferred the saloons over the 245 estates - I think they have better lines and are more attractive) and it wasn't overly far from me, so I bought it. I've had it around a year and a half now, and it's been good, as expected, looking back now I regret impulse buying as It has the auto transmission - there's nothing wrong with it but it would be nice to have more than x3 gears, it also pretty much put full stops on anything I would like to do performance wise - what's the point in Webers and a cam when your putting power through a torque converter?! What it does well is just run and be pretty practical, it's reliable and always starts. Recently I've been thinking about selling it, it is a really good car but it's just not as exciting as I would like. It's too damn practical! Maybe if I'd of got a manual things would have been different?!
