A bit modern ('97 car) but does anyone have a viable alternative to me paying £230 for a new key from the main dealer? I only have one key, it works fine and the car is in good shape (bought from another member on here) so it might be worth spending the money on it. It's this type: Seems to be used on other models, too. I've seen used keys for sale on eBay and the sellers seem to get positive feedback after they sell, suggesting that the buyers were able to get the keys reprogrammed.

Have you tried calling a local locksmith up to see what he can do? I know a few however do get funny about coding other people's keys since they can potentially become liable for them, especially if they arrived faulty to them. As an example, old Pug keys love to drain their batteries due to a built in flaw on the original chips. But then it is a risk worth taking for a £30-40 recode +the cost of the key and a recut blade vs. whatever Peugeot wanted . The cheaper scenario was however done thought a Pug specialist and it was dependant on one sourcing their own key and someone to recut the blade (the latter again people became funny about...). £230? I was quoted not far off that for a Mondeo key from Ford and £180 from a local locksmith alegedly using a genuine Ford key! In the end I got one redone with a like for like fully functioning key (same design as the original) for £110 from another known chap in the area.

Never really thought about it until you mentioned it but I do have the number of a really good auto alarm/locksmith guy. Can't hurt to call him and ask...

had the same issue and tried a lot of places, the early flip keys seem to be a big problem for a locksmith. A new key from the dealer is the only working option I found. As my previous w210 had a lot more problems than only the key eventually when the last key stopped working it wrote the car off.
the newer "smart" keys can be supplied by a locksmith but with different results, they're a bit cheaper at the dealership as well.

Have you tried any locksmith for the new key, they can provide you the new key at $100.

I haven't used this and no idea if it would work for you but when researching using a modernish Merc engine somewhere it wasn't designed to go, this came up a lot. carlabimmo.com/julieIn essence a bit of circuitry that goes in the ecu disables the key immobilizer. Might be too involved or too expensive to pay someone else to do.
