took Range rover for it's MOT today and passed with only one advisory that front pads are getting worn and discs looking a bit scabby. (a job for the summer). Emission results on LPG were 0.1% CO and 69ppm HC. For the purposes of experimentation we also measured the petrol afterwards - 9% Co and 1500 HC !!!! guess the old flapper system has some issues! but from the LPG side of things at least the engine and ignition at least look in rude health. I am beginning to get to the end of my tether with the EFI system, I will check all the inputs again but last time everything was fine, I think sometime soon I may be fitting a pair of SU's! or a hotwire system. My last test was... .21 on Co and 130 on HC. Pretty happy with that.

Spent a couple more hours on the minor today, spigot bearing turned up so it, clutch, starter and gearbox could be fitted. Also managed to fit the fuel line and thread the exhaust into place. Hopefully tomorrow or monday the engine can go in.

After a weekend of decorating got some car time. The minor engine is now in, my clutch set up didn't fit though the master cyl wanted to occupy the same space as the front brake union, I have now modified to crossmember inboard, it and the prop getting a couple of coats of paint. I have also started the last major body job which is the bonnet lid, currently stripping the paint off. The range rover developed a lumpy idle which turned out to be the king lead arcing out, so easily fixed. Also punped up tyres, checked fluids and fired up TR after its winter lay up then went for a short drive, all seems well.

made slow but steady progress on the minor, propshaft is in clutch just needs bleeding, mounts are all done, just working my way round the rest, shouldn't be too difficult as all standard parts left to do. On the range rover I noticed some cracks on the 1 year old fuel line from local factors, on removal it was far worse, replaced with mocal line now. Also managed to scratch the whole length of the lotus, a steel plate had fallen against it and I didn't realise as I drove it into the garage, It is low down so hopefully I can make a passable job of touching it in.

Auch, scratching the Lotus must have hurt a bit... At least you are able to handle it yourself!

I was a little upset!
Fortunatelly it is very low down so touching in with a fine brush and flatting back seems to be giving a virtually invisible repair unless you lay down and take a close look.

Touched the scratch in but didn't realise how thin the paint was and polished through to the primer in one area, so when the weather warms up I will have to spray the bottom 6 inches of the door. Most work has been on the minor which has gone seriously backwards. When I bled the clutch 1/2 litre of fluid dissapeared in less than a minute and it turned out it was all in the bell housing. What I have discovered is the rear of the cylinder needs supporting otherwise it blows out. Fix is pretty simple, machine a spacer to sandwich behind it so that will be the job for tomorrow.

Machined a washer to fit behind the slave cylinder, put it all back together and we now have a functional clutch, just need to make a bracket for the return spring and it's done. Also fitted the prop, throttle / choke cables, heater hoses and begun the engine wiring, but as usuall a lack of planning slowed things, no clamps for hoses, earth strap or exhaust hangers.

On the range rover I noticed some cracks on the 1 year old fuel line from local factors, on removal it was far worse, replaced with mocal line now. Seems to be quite a problem at the moment with dodgy fuel hose. Been keeping a watchful eye on mine, but all seem okay so far.

Wired tbe engine up fitted a coil and distributor which actually worked added some fuel and lo and behold it started almost immediately. It would 't rev though, this turned out to be a stuck dashpot, cleaned it up and now it starts and runs superbly, engine sounds great, clutch works but does seem noisy hopefully some oil in the gearbox and bedding in will sort this. Next up fit the radiator so i can run it for longer and drive up and down the driveway.

One slight problem now though, it won't turn off! I think it's backfeeding through the alternator warning light enough to hold the ignition relay in, I'll try it later with the bulb removed. Not much time today though, in laws doblo failed mot on rear brakes so muggins is expected to fix it!

He couldn't get the parts for the doblo so I ended up working on the minor, radiator fitted and hoses, then run it up to temperature, engine sounds great and runs really well, thermostat opened, and all seems fine.
2 Problems though.
Firstly the oil filter leaks, don't expect that to be much of an issue.
Secondly and far more worryingly, the clutch makes a scraping noise as it is engaged, seems to work fine but sounds like something on the disc is touching the cover or flywheel as it is slipped. as it is standard clutch and flywheel the only thing I can think of is I have some how managed to put the disc in the wrong way around, looks like the gearbox could be coming out again..... Before that though I will fill the gearbox with oil and run it up through the gears to check that is OK.
After the engine I started on the other things which stop it being driven, correctly setting the front ride height, tightening all the bolts then fitting the split pins etc, one side is done just the other and steering to do.
Oh and it is the igntiion light which keeps it running, need to fit a diode.

TR passed its mot with no work, Doblo is done (after much swearing) and the others are working fine. On the minor engine has been run up to temperature with no dramas, the clutch is noisy when it is engaged which seems to be due to the pressure plate being out of true, something to fix over the winter. Front panel is on and all bolted up, exhaust is done(and making that chrachteristic minor parp), so all that is left is to paint the bonnet and sills set the front ride height, fit the trans tunnel and a multitude of odds and ends. On the bonnet after stripping the paint I managed to by heating and cooling rapidly to shrink a large depression which oil canned into something much shallower and stable, all be it far from perfect.

Still working on the miinor panels, they are now almost ready for topcoats, bumpers are on (minus valances which will be a task for later). I have modified the bolt in trans tunnel to clear the brake & clutch pipes, oh and also taxed it, might even drive it up and down the street next weekend for a short test. Not much on the others fitted a new o ring to the mx5 cam sensor, but that is about all.
As if I don't have enough old cars my daughter is home from uni and needs a car to get to work, current plan is a Street KA which seem suprisingly good value and not to expensive to insure (£450 for a 20 year old with no ncb).

Had a week off, on range rover seized electric window motor freed off and missing bung replaced. On minor bonnet repainted and fitted Trans tunnel modified to clear brake and clutch lines and bolted in, bumpers on, plus loads of minor jobs and time for a quick test drive, as previously mentioned the clutch release bearing is noisy because the cover is out of true, but it works fine as to the brakes gears axle etc. Bad points tracking is miles out, engine has massive oil leaks from oil filter to block joint and fuel pump blanking plate and the main steel fuel line has a pin hole right in the middle. The others have not been touched, but a new subframe for the mx5 has arrived (rack mounting bent on current one), and I have ordered the missing ac wiring for the range rover

All I can say kevins is get ready to give your grin muscles a good workout! I really don't think you can drive these things grumpy, they're such a good laugh. Not particularly fast, but the fun factor is at the top of the scale! These were my two. The grey one was my first one, and it was part of a little tale I wrote here in 2015 called Twelve Cars In A Year! Also a little bit more on it can be found here...The yellow one is my most recent one, and you can read about it here, here, and also here!I keep thinking that now I've had two of them I've probably got them out of my system, but I there's almost always at least one in my ebay watchlist so I obviously havn't. But when I get my next one, no doubt you'll be able to read about it here! The only other advice I can give is, just have fun with it, they're brilliant!

well we bought the ka, all in all not bad for £900, body is dead straight, interior is virtually perfect(its a red limited edition). issues : -A/C doesn't work not much gas in it might try to get it filled to see if it will hold any gas. -one front tyre is only just legal (strangely the rest have around 6mmm. -windscreen is not the correct heated one (looked up the price for a heated screen from Ford, £939!!) I can see why it wasn't replaced -Boot opening on the remote seems a bit random. (opens from inside though) so only thing which really needs doing is the tyre. on the minor the new fuel line has arrived and the oil leaks seem to be due to someone using RTV without a gasket. but I now have another problem, someone managed to catch the side of the MX5 on a spike sticking out of a gatepost, it has completely sliced through the lower part of the rear wing. I will be trying to straighten this out and weld it back together at the weekend.
