Triumph of shame....... oh dear. Turbo Likely to have a negative effect on reliability- if lower reliability were possible.......
Easier to make it 2.5, they go better with a 2.5.
So why is the head off the UMM?
Incidentally, no 1 son is as Plymouth uni doing engineering. He's a bit frustrated at the near total absence of workshop time. He's a pretty good metalworker.

So why is the head off the UMM? Incidentally, no 1 son is as Plymouth uni doing engineering. He's a bit frustrated at the near total absence of workshop time. He's a pretty good metalworker. Nick Indeed, it runs when it hasn't used all of its electricity up but needs valve stem seal, it also doesn't stop as the brakes don't work. At all. If he needs somewhere to fix his stuff then give me a shout, I've no storage space but can help with facilities, I was once a poor student with a mostly broken 2cv trying to keep it on the road. The head is off the UMM as I lent it to the Hobbit for a day. She drove it on the A38 for 30 miles in low range at 60mph, the temp gauge went to max, the overheat light came on and she carried on driving for another few miles. Ducked it. Brand new head warped. I haven't spoken to her since (this was in Sept) as I am still quite upset.

Oh dear, bad news about the head...... and the relationship. Mechanical sympathy is a relatively rarely ticked option box in the human race specification I find. The "it's still moving so it must be OK, never mind the smoke and noise" philosophy is distressingly common.......
Re the student, it was more that he makes a very useful (if not particularly glamorous) assistant should you need another pair of hands - and he enjoys an engineering challenge. His stuff that needs fixing is still in my garage in Somerset so you are safe there! Appreciate the offer though.
I had a Dyane as a student. It is possible to change the kingpins and bushes in the street with a big hammer and a blow lamp, but I don't recommend it!

And lo, verily for it is Sunday, a day of scrolling through the bits of RR that have been missed, and he saw the thread of Umm, and he readeth it, loveth it, and it came to pass that he bookmarketh it!
Sorry about that, got a tad carried away - must be the extra hour in bed. Great thread, cracking vehicle, but sorry to hear about the new head.

So it's been a while ehh... Plenty updates, but I'll start with MegaUMM. IMG_3268 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr Axle bits cleaned up and fitted IMG_4183 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr I know I need to make longer shackles (11 inches I am thinking!) as they should be a function of spring length... but that should give you an idea. IMG_4186 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr Finally fitted one of the treppadors up to the banded rims.. IMG_4265 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr IMG_4266 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr Time to pull the old motor out... IMG_4375 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr So the crane could lift high enough I had to drop the front of the truck so the axle was on wooden blocks rather than axle stands... this would've been easier pre axle install... Alloy block LS or the iron block 5.3? the 5.3's are very underrated engines What you see is an LS test block, there is an LS3 376/525 on order with Chevy Performance. All alloy Corvette motor, 525hp with the race cam in it.

RUST MUST GO. DESTROY RUST. IMG_4452 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr No need for this lower seal channel, they do more harm than good on an UMM, the prime source of rotten sills. IMG_4453 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr And whammy. Mega sill tacked along the old rusty edge (kept to align this new sill) and onto the rear body work which I chopped an inch out of as it never had a sill. The main aim here is to have something substantial enough that is tied back to the chassis with those monster outriggers that I can use a field jack on to jack that side of the truck up. IMG_4460 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr IMG_4461 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr With another outrigger at the rear (the fuel tank takes up all the space in-between) it should be heaps strong and hanging out that far should act as a good rock/tree slider. Win.

Next I chopped out the rusty section between the newly welded in sill and the beatbox/floor area, this was behind the rubber seal water trap area (chopped this out once and for all) and had suffered badly. The repair panel took surprisingly long to make up.. IMG_4481 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr Half tacked and half fully welded in, and with the B pillar resecured to check for fitment it looks like it has all gone nicely. PHEW! IMG_4484 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr Hmm... bumpy outer bodywork.. looks suspect... IMG_4527 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr Yep. Common UMM problem is the A pillar area has this separate 50x30mm C section/box section mix behind it adding the main strength down to the outrigger, this is just pushed up against the outer bodywork and just sealed/joined on the door hinging side so becomes a moisture trap behind, in-between this and the outer bodywork. IMG_4528 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr With the rusty section removed I decided to tin opener the bodywork above to check that steel, all looks okay though. IMG_4529 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr A couple of sections to add in whilst I wait for more steel to arrive, this small floor section - the gap to the right is left so I can add 50x30mm box section in to replace the bit I've removed above, I want this to go all the way down to the sill so I can fully weld it to that and the outrigger. IMG_4530 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr Teeny repair section upfront. IMG_4531 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr IMG_4536 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr Had a mega session with the flapper discs and bare metalled quite a lot of the front end and engine bay, also chopped out two more sections in this passenger front corner. IMG_4588 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr IMG_4586 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr IMG_4587 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr A better look at the new outrigger, additional outrigger and the rest of that side of the truck. The fuel tank goes behind the second outrigger that I've added in and there will be another at the rear of the tank - just before the rear wheel well. I'll plate in all the ends here and probably triangulate too. IMG_4590 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr IMG_4593 by Alex de Vries, on Flickr I'll finish up this front corner before moving on to anything else... Great build Alex
What rust treatment are you using as you are clearly not replacing everything that has rust on it?

Great build Alex What rust treatment are you using as you are clearly not replacing everything that has rust on it? Massive fan of the Bilt Hamber range. I use their Hydrate 80 to rust kill after a mega thorough pummelling with wire brushes and flapper wheels. Brush it on in two coats, one in either direction and work it right into any lapped over seams.... although I am mostly cutting out lapped over sections and welding full seams. I use their Dynax Seam as a seam sealer. I get this in the tins and then mask off either side of a seam and usually use a gloved finger to get some gloop out of the pot and then wipe it down the seam, the same way I'd finish off a bathroom sealant edge. I use their Dynax 50 in the biggest size then decant into a schultz gun can (warm up in a pot of hot water) and then spray inside chassis members and other box section. Note I am not a fan of spraying this or any other sort of waxoil coating on the outside of chassis/underside as I'd rather use a tough paint (Simoniz tough paints or the bed liner types) and keep an eye on any corrosion rather than it getting masked behind a layer or wax (which I've had happen a few times before). www.bilthamber.com/corrosion-protection-and-rust-treatments/
