First a bit of history. My friends had a lovely e30 325i which he decided to drive into a tree trying to overtake me in my mini, on the way home from a trackday in 2010 or something like that. Not many pictures, but this is kinda the damage: We decided we would re-shell it, so he bought a 318i auto with a knackered engine in it. We started to swap stuff over, but he wanted everything from the 325 swapped over, including with wiring loom etc So that it could run the cruise control and all the other little bits. 325i Being stripped down. These are the two cars side by side. We got most of the mechanics swapped over, engine, box subframes suspension brakes etc But ran out of time to do the loom, and wiring and plumbing etc. It sat in a couple of garages for the next 4-5 years. At which point, I decided enough was enough, he was never going to do anything with it and that I was going to give it a go. So I have a 318 auto with a 325i engine and manual box in it. For some reason, it's back on a drum rear beam, as he was skint and needed the cash for the disc beam. No interior as that's gone walk about, and nothing is hooked up, wired in or plumbed in. There are about 3 gearboxes, a couple of diffs, and boxes and boxes of parts from the two cars. This leads us up to here: It's now on my drive, and by the crappy picture above that the recovery driver took, you can see how full of stuff it is. The shell is in really good shape from what I can remember from 4 years ago, and it's been dried stored since then. I think it will need a patch or two on the sills, but I have no idea what underneath is going to be like until I get under it. Plans are to get it working, and just make it nice with some nice wheels, lowered and a nice interior. Nice nice nice.

Went out to have a look around it in the daylight. I maaaaaaaaaaaay have been a little ambitious for RRG16 ha ha. free dent Fairly straight this side The tape on the sill is from when I started a rust repair 5 years ago but never actually welded in new metal. Not meant to be in the boot. Some of the labelling of the loom i'm going to have to contend with, "brain 2" I got 5 BBS wheels with it though. Traditionally attached, and not piled inside. Free mould. Back is full of curse word too. Only real bit of floopan I can see at the moment. And it has rust.... 2.5 engine, will probably chuck this. If I'm going to be wiring the car from scratch and converting to this engine, may as well drop in a more modern one. Rust free scuttle corner. Even though it's dirty, this one is rust free as well! It's come a looooong way since park lane!! Don't know whether too keep betty or not yet. Someone obviously tried to pinch it once in its life.

Need to make some room in the car so I can start working on the inside with the loom. So decided to chuck on the BBS wheels and chuck the stealies. I was expecting some brake calipers when I took the wheel off if I'm honest. Car comes with 5 mint BBS wheels and tyres....... Apparently there are some centre caps in a box somewhere. Camber everywhere. Pile slightly smaller. I did start to remove the chrome trim so that I can fit the shadowline black trim. I borke all the chrome trim removing it, and realised alot of the black trim is missing. Hate this car so far.

I'm absolutely LOVING this. Love e30s and a tidy one (or even an untidy one) with a nice big six in it is always nice. Looking forward to following the progress on this.

EDIT: Keep Betty +1 Lovely car Thanks guys and Betty is staying for now, just gathering parts at the moment. My mini needs a wiring overhaul for its next trackday. My Modern Mini needs a couple of bits doing. I need to build a shed to store all the tools and parts, And then this will get some attention. I forgot to mention, I've got the parts to get it back on discs on the back.

I've just moved so progress is slow as I'm sorting out stuff in the new house. The engine I've bought is a non-vanos 2.5 M50 engine 189bhp, which was removed from the last car due to a suspect head gasket. Engine delivered. Gearbox off. This is a e36/e46 4 cylinder gearbox. I've got 3 gearbox's to choose from now. And 2 diffs, so need to see what fits with what to make a driveline to fit. I think this is an M20 flywheel, but don't know. Bought a little stand for the engine, but it is so wobbly and wonky I'm terrified it's going to fall on me. Started stripping it down to get the head off. I think it's just the head bolts to remove to get the head off now. But I need a couple of different socket, extensions and adapters in order to get at them. My garage is way to small to rebuild this car, may have to roll it out onto the drive and stick the mini in here.

If you have the 325i (E30) gearbox and prop those would be the way to go as they bolt to the M50 and you can use the M20 starter and flywheel as they're lighter than the M50 ones. 4 cyl boxes will work with the 6 cyl engine but ratios and durability are pants. Same for the diff, try to use the larger 325i one. That is the M20 flywheel in your pic.

Got the head off Looks like the engine has had a hone recently When the fella put the head on the table, he put a massive scratch in the head, but he was skimming it so no worries. I only really noticed when I got it back, that he's not done it in one pass and had to reset the head and do it again on the end. You can see in the top right of the head by cylinder one, theres a line where the two passes join and theres a teeny tiny ridge . It's minimal, but I hope it doesn't blow. I'm waiting on my head gasket set to arrive, will do the valve stem seals and lap in the valves. Maybe a bit of porting. My garage was unusable with the e30 in it, so it's been sent outside and mini moved in.
