Hi all,
I am looking for advice on getting a full body spray for a 1970s Mercedes Pagoda 280 SL (W113). I have been quoted prices from some spray shops but feel they are very over priced and there must be people which will do it for less. The car is completely stripped, plus the person which is working on it for me is able to do the full pre prep but for obvious reasons does not want to do the spray as he has not got the skills and equipment/facility needed.
In short, where can I find someone who would do it at a reasonable price and what would that be?

Expect to pay at least 2k for a decent paint job if all the prep is done, you'll get cheaper but you do get what you pay for in this world, a £500 job will look a million dollars for a few months! Ive been in the paint and body game for over 20 years now, save and pay the extra trust me

2K does not sound too bad. The quotes I was getting were from 5-8k which i thought were a little steep.

We've got a Pagoda coming in after Christmas, and that's a five figure job, but that includes all of the prep and a lot more aside for just the body.
Whereabouts are you based? And are you after a show-stopping finish with mile deep paint or nice, but just on a car to be used? It does make a difference to the process and potentially many, many hours of polishing and hence the price.
Also, we get cars come to us all the time which are supposedly "prepped" ready for paint, but in reality are nowhere near. Prepping for a bit of damage repair etc may not be much, but prepping a classic car for a full body repaint is a lot more involved. Not saying this car will or won't be like that, but just in our experience a lot are!
Without more info it could be anything from £2000+VAT to £6000+VAT

The car currently is in Oxford.
What we are looking to do is most likely resell the car and therefore are very price conscious. What we would want is a decent paint job, not to show condition, but obviously pleasing on the eye (lower price range).
I am aware of how important the prep is, especially on the end finish. The car has got small patches of rust but nothing much as it did spend a lot of its time in Morocco and the person working on the car is able to do the welding and body work. We have been having issues finding somewhere to blast the car. What do you recon is the best way to remove the existing paint?
It is the first car we have restored and i never imagined how expensive and how hard it is to get the car sprayed (decently). The different qualities in sprays and price is extraordinary. It is turning out to be the most expensive/difficult to organise process of the restoration. (They do not tell you that on Wheeler Dealers haha).
If a car is prepped to adequate condition, more or less how long would it take to be sprayed?

Depends exactly on how much paint and what condition the panels are in.
Do you have any photos of the car in it's current state?
If it is ready for paint (I'd still want to allow a day or two prior to paint to really make sure it is ready and things like masking a car properly takes a lot longer than people would ever imagine), then it could be in and out in one week, but ideally I'd always want to allow a little longer if people have a strict deadline.

you could try classic refinishing in witney. I haven't been there for years, but he always did a decent job at a decent rate.
It is always difficult for places to quote without seeing the car in the state that they are going to get it in, but I have found in the past that if your open and honest about what your budget is, then most places will try and come up with a solution for you.

if its genuinley ready to prime and no strip /fit involved then £2-3 sounds about right for a good job
id suggest you ask to see other jobs theyve done as theres plenty of cowboys that talk the talk and louse up your car

also watch how you word things when asking , ive been in the trade many years and you can get bitten with these "just do an okay job" and quick tidy ups , the customer is all ears when you quote a reasonble job for whats asked then once they get the okay job its never good enough and bites the bodyshop in the ass

I think it is a bit more work than i was expecting. I think the best route would be to take it to an independent garage which has good experience such as firefly. There is still time to get a bit more information as the engine still has to be rebuilt before we even start to get serious about the painting. Thanks a lot for the replies, really helped!

What about Chesterton Coachworks in Enstone ? Good long established classic car place . Or powerparks in Banbury ? Excellent work has come from there although i have no idea on price of these companies . www.powerparkautos.co.uk/www.chestertoncoachworks.co.uk/If you are thinking of just selling it anyway why not contact one of the companies above to see if they would do the work , take it off your hands or point you in the right direction of someone who would ?

On my RST I recently had around 18 holes welded up left from a rollcage and a bit of floor surgery. Now you can barely tell that the car was worked on. For the privilege I paid more than I was willing to (and if I am honest it was still excessively pricey!) ultimately but in comparison to before I noticed a few things: -The car came back better than when I left it with no new faults bar a fuel gauge wire being disconnected -The finish was better than what I was expecting - people will be hard pushed to know that a rollcage once lived in the car -Related to the first point, nothing else on the car was damaged in the process. It is the first time this has ever happened, quite handy when much of the car is now being made of unotanium and spares are beginning to become pricey! -I am free to work on other parts of the car rather than rectifying others mistakes ; I have become far too used to doing the former stupidly. I hate to say it but you really do get what you pay for and detective work goes a long way in the painting trade. If you do want something to look shiny for a few months however I do know of a place...

If you are going to sell anyway why not just get it sprayed in primer to stop rust and adjust price accordingly when selling - ie if a respray is going to cost £5000 then knock £5000 off what you intend selling for and save yourself a lot of hassle in getting a decent spray job cheap ?

The art is in the prep. So I would be nervous that you have someone comfortable with that stage but not the paint itself. From my experience, bodyshops get nervous about someone else doing the prep, so it doesn't end up saving much as they factor that in to their quotes. If you need to paint, unlikely you can sell a car for profit.....

Depending on how much the Pagoda was purchase I would like to think there is a profit in it. They go for quite a tidy sum in fine fettle. Then again I guess resto projects and spares are probably not cheap.
