Arrived today. Knew what to expect so here's some pics. No horrors luckily, yet anyway... Haven't opened the goodie bag yet. Hubcaps are gash so I thought I'd quickly take them off. Oh dear Should be fun looking over it and starting to tidy it up. Haven't jumped it yet but p.o says that'll start it. Hopefully just needs a battery after sitting so long

That looks like a pretty good start to me mate. If you do do what you intend to do. Please leave the hubcaps on

Thanks guys! One of the sills is pretty rotten so I'm on the case. Going to have it up now and have a good look underneath, inside and out isn't too bad.

Goodie bag contained all the history, an indicator, mirror, and some paint which is handy to tidy up after all the rot is cut out the sills. This first week I'm hoping to have made some decent progress on the sills, cleaning up interior/exterior, and a few little mods to get the ball rolling. Just realised I forgot the bay shot:

That looks like a nice honest 5, looks pretty straight from where I'm sitting. Look forward to seeing what you do with it.

I think the key word here is "looks" okay Here's the worse sill - crumbled when I poked around. That's all of it though I think, everythings that left is solid. So lots of tidying up to do! The underside of the car is amazingly clean. These don't rot in the floorpans, usually sills, windows and headlight area. Anyway I thought I was done looking over it. Just a bog standard campus thats been sat for a while. It is, but I found this little gem. One on each side. I love retro parcel shelf speakers and have some cool ones in the Escort, but never seen any like these! I think they'd be really cool in a little J Kei car

I love the Mk1's - definitely on my list of cars I'd like to own at some point.
No real updates yet really, just fighting the rust. Dewipered it quickly and it looks better for it like my last one, also have the springs ready...

So update time, had a productive car day with jonxs which began with selling my narrower Slotmags: (Widers pictured on the right) Which meant I put the Escort on my spare wheels, actually looks not bad for a temporary solution. Didn't take many pics but took the cracked front springs out, cut down and cleaned up what was left to result in a reasonable drop... Hit the jackpot with rear torsion bar, they can be notoriously seized up but these were really clean and came out no issues. Again, just a sensible height for now. But most importantly got it running. The solenoid on the starter was sticky but we got it started repeatedly which is good. Engine runs sweet, almost like new. All electrical components work which is a bonus! Going to start cleaning it up more now. I want to ditch the trims but the wheels will need a bit of work to be decent enough for them to come off. Also going to lower it more now knowing it's all free and easy to adjust. Really starting to like this car now, seeing the potential.

Thanks guys, it's already a lot of fun haha. Attacking more rust today. A majority of it is just on the surface, average sized hole in left sill and then some rot scattered along the left. Started up first go this morning which is nice. Moved some of the cars around and got the 5 out so I could drive it for the first time. I'm really impressed, runs really well and the brakes are amazing for a car that's been sat for about 3 years. I'm in two minds whether to leave the side trims on or not this time, white one had them off, red one had them on. They're fragile but there's a trick to getting them off without damaging them. Paint underneath is really nice so it would look good either way I reckon

Lopped another coil off each side the other day, won't do any more otherwise it's gunna be a bit too much off. This should be sufficient for now: Mentioned in the other thread that I'd like it done ready for when the escort's insurance runs out, so I have 10 days to get it roadworthy and MOT'd. Should be interesting!

Top rad hose has split so it curse word coolant everywhere, wrapped up to hold together for now until the new one comes. Still attacking rust, there's a lot of it. There's also a phenomenal knocking from the front end, can only assume it's the cracked springs not seating correctly. Picked up a set from mark yesterday though so it should be all good. It's getting there, got to drive it again today and I'm itching to get it done. Not too much left to do I reckon, still haven't spent a penny on it yet while being a lot better than when it arrived so that's good!

Time to start tidying it up. All the plastics are many shades of grey so they'll be black like the red one. Got the rust off the steels and gave them a quick coat to experiment. Looks a bit smarter, better than the ugly hubcaps and better than rusty brown steels. Last week to get it done, so all the stuff like battery etc will be happening. Put it all off to see how far I can get without spending a penny.

That looks so much cleaner with the trims black. Your wheels are looking better, you keeping em or maybe a little change??
