I was debating buying this but I see I was beaten to it. I'd fit different springs off a 1.6 GTi - the 1.6 is a far far lighter unit that the XUD lump of pig iron The 1.6 XU5 is all alloy for one. The 1.9 springs may be more suited to the task . The biggest difference that came on my GTi in terms of handling was from changing the dampers and rear beam mounts. It previously did have the dampers changed for Monroes up front and Boge OE equivlants on the rear. It was interesting to say the least! Bilstein B4s are said to be a downgrade from the Pug stuff from what a few sources say and I'd agree with that from what has been seen on a previous car of mine (MK3 Mondeo oversteering on a roundabout at 25mph anyone?), but a secondhand set of half decent Konis or preferable Bilstein B6s will transform the car. I would say that my 205 was spot on like this ; Only the Clio has possibly been as quick (possibly quicker when the Pug was on stock tyres) and as fun around the bends out of all of the hot hatches I have owned. Have fun with it. I'd be tempted to fix it and leave it as it is . Did you ever fix the brakes? Master cylinders are not massive money on these. As for the pulling that could be down to seized sliders and/or stuck pads ; the Bendix brakes if fitted can be prone to this ; Stripping, refitting a new brake fitting kit, cleaning out the calipers and regreasing the sliders in ceramic brake grease should cure it ; you may find the slider seals are past it by now. That is if it is not leaking

if you wind the throttle stop out a little bit, you'll be surprised at how well they actually go. Please tell me more about this...!!!!!!!

if you wind the throttle stop out a little bit, you'll be surprised at how well they actually go. Please tell me more about this...!!!!!!! The throttle stop on the injector pump, that prevents you opening the throttle too far and over revving the engine too. I wound my throttle stop out a few turns. It would go right off the clock on the motorway (sorry, private road) and would sit at 3 figures all day long. Even though mine had done 120,000 mils when I bought it, it was in excellent shape and didn't use any coolant or oil. I never drove it hard from cold and kept made sure I serviced it quite regularly, so driving/revving it hard wasn't a concern. It was questioned about using 1.6 gti springs with the weight of the diesel lump. I appreciate what's being said, but I can honestly say that I never had any issues with grounding/bottoming out. Believe me, all of mine were driven 'HARD' on all sorts of roads. I used to follow the local road rally night events in it and I never had any issues with the suspension at all. Handling was fantastic. Obviously, there would be certain road conditions/surfaces that would possibly be too much for this set up, as in heavy landings and a series of short dips one after the other. It all depends how you intend to drive the car and how abusive you are to it. All I can say is, I was early 20's when I had my first 205d and this set up. I drove it like an enthusiastic (sometimes overly enthusiastic) 20 something year old. It suited me perfectly. Will

I'm still yet to try the throttle screw adjustment thing Will do this on weekend and let you know what I find. Hopefully I will not be posting a pic of a cooked XUD lump

The throttle stop on the injector pump, that prevents you opening the throttle too far and over revving the engine too... Well I will have to try and find that and give it a subtle fiddle!

Just make sure that the motor is a good one that doesn't use any/much oil and/or water before adjusting the throttle stop, because by doing that it allows you to rev the engine higher. The 1769cc engine (if a good one) is a fantastic little unit.

Thanks for the info. Yes my XUD engine is very healthy and does not use much oil or water. Over the last 2000 miles it hasn't used any noticeable amount so it should be ok I hope.. I do beleive in mechanical sympathy hence why I run old cars so I will not do anything I feel will create problems I spent too much time this weekend either pished or hungover so will have to wait till next weekend now...

I always vow to do more to my cars but I never do...
With the 205 I've had to get things done as I use it regularly and up until recently it has been sitting idle!
It needed a new starter motor and nearly the whole of the rear brake system replacing as it was shot to $h!t but now all is good and it's buzzing along nicely (for now!)...
At the moment it wears some over-sized steels that I have never really thought suited it and it makes the steering ruddy heavy to boot. Well, I have found some 1.6 GTI Speedlines so I will be fitting those soon and I hope that will make the 205 a little sweeter to drive... What wheel nuts do I need incidentally?! I don't want to get the wrong ones!!!
As for other tweaks, it is going to wear Rallye colours on the grille and the boot and I want a different steering wheel and gear knob also...
One other thing I really want to do is get yellow headlamp lenses or colour my existing ones. What do you good people think about this? Yes or no?!
So, I know this isn't the most interesting of threads but I thought I'd just put a little post up...

Glad you still have this: we both have a 205 and a Toledo.
I have some brand new nuts that are ostensibly correct, but you'd need a picture to check and I'm not sure how to post on here. If you PM me your mobile I could send you a photo that way?
I coloured my headlamps yellow with Laminx. Worked a treat!

PS I also have some 13" XS steels if you'd prefer that route?

Thanks for the offer Topaz205, I will see how the GTI alloys look and let you know... With regards to the fixing I need to attach my Speedlines is this the correct bolt/nut...?! I think that my steels are held on differently at the moment as I just have studs and nuts (what a name for a nightclub!!!) at the moment... I just know that this won't be as easy as I thought...!!!

Thank you for the picture. The nuts I have look identical, but I will measure them to check. They are brand new, so should set your wheels off nicely.

Again, the battered old 205 still entertains!
I really do enjoy using this little French wonder even though diesel is a bit of a swear-word nowadays...!!!
I just wondered if you good people could recommend a nice, aftermarket steering wheel of 80'/90's style to replace the big old standard thing I have in place already...?!
I would just go for a 205 GTI one but I want something a little different and I just thought you lot would be the best people to ask.
Any suggestions (nothing too expensive!!!)...?!
Ta muchly

Mono MonteCarlo or similar style by OMP would be my personal preference.

I stuck an ad up in the parts section on here and was offered a momo with vw boss for£40. Sold the boss for £20 on here and bought a cheap boss from somewhere on the net for about £16. It took ages to arrive and once it was fitted it did'tn cancel the indicators! Spose what I'm trying to say is stick up an ad and roll the dice lol! Oh and buy a second hand momo boss not a cheap one lol! I'm sure you have seen the one I'm talking about on my thread, I'm too lazy to put a pic here!

My word it’s been a long, long, looooooong time since I’ve posted on here!!
The 205 has been so bloody reliable and dependable and lovable... That is, until today!!
Chugging along in the old thing there was the merest of stutters then the engine died.
I called the RAC, they came out and had a peek and told me that the cambelt had gone, I could have cried!!!
What do I do now?! Is this going to cost the earth?! I’m not good with the tools so I won’t be able to do anything myself!!
This is a ruddy tragedy (well it feels like it) that I fear will mean I never drive my little Pug again!!
Is it worth repairing or will the cost just be too much?!
Any thoughts and opinions would be massively appreciated...

Blast from the past! Sorry to hear about the damage... A quick check on google says they're interference so likely to have bent some valves. Try and find a replacement cylinder head and get the belt swapped - should be a few hundred quid all in - cheaper than finding a new car. Or find an XUDT for improved performance

There are a few engines on ebay. There is a reconditioned one and one from Spain which including delivery is £500.

Hello there...
Clutching at straws here!!
As my car was going slowly when the cambelt ‘went’ and was therefore not revving very highly is there just the slightest chance that not much damage was done??
When it ceased to proceed there was very little noise or fuss, it just cut out!!
I am only asking as I expected something like this to have been quite catastrophic when it occurred!!
Should I (when all this isolation stuff blows over) just get the cambelt replaced and see what happens??
Any advice is appreciated. I don’t want to sink my 205 just yet!!
I do hope you’re all well...

I'm newish to old Pug diesels, but I've read that while they're interference motors, they're more likely to break rocker arms rather than bending valves. Can't vouch for the truth of that but it's probably worth pulling the valve cover and checking.
