managed to find 5 mins to work on the Olds today and as its up on stands thought today was the day to paint the underneath.
Yeah, my favourite job too.
Luckily the Olds has no underseal or other cack, just grease and surface rust.
So Mr heavy duty degreaser comes out to play
and then I start cleaning up the trans crossmember which I have tripped over a couple of times.
Its THICK with old engine oil, ATF, grease...
and after I've been cleaning that for like an age it strkes me that I've never ever owned a car with a rusted trans crossmember. I've never heard of anyone having one rust out. This one is so caked in old oil it will never rust and its not like anyone bar my MOT tester will ever see it once its painted and fitted... But I've started now...
Came up lovely.
and I've gone for one nice heavy (but thinnned) coat of Eastwood reust encapsulating primer on any area with any surface rust (after wire brushing of course) and then I'll go over the whole area with retardent primer and chassis black. The encapsulater stuff is ideal for over rust but a waste over painted or shiny metal. It needs coverage on the rust but not a 100% coat.
Kind wish I'd sprayed it on now.
Got the wheel well done and the front half of one chassis leg.
Still plenty to do. Its like painting the Forth Bridge.
And in other news I got a phone call to say Paul was knee deep in my trans fluid so the box will be back soon.
