I'm in the UK. They used to have a bit of a reputation for being a girly car but the Mk1 is becoming increasingly less so I'd say. It tends to huff up a bit when two damp people get in a cold car, but the blowers are good so it's no big deal. I think that's a function of it being small space as opposed to the roof seals etc making it damp inside. Ok. Makes sense. So how often do they need work? And what would you say is the weak link? Just rust?

Pretty sure that's a kit you can buy and add to your mx-5. I've seen a fair few Japanese cars with them. I see. I have mixed feelings about it. What do you guys think of it vs the standard hardtop?

How about a 924/944? Cheap, reliable, coupe, RWD, manual, 2+2. Has popups, so maybe not ideal, but a legit alternative to an MX5. I think the De Thomaso Longchamp is the definition of your GT car, but it's almost certainly out of your price range. And mine. I assume the likes of the 90s Ghibli would be too much of a sports car as well as too expensive. Cheers Duncan

In any case, for the GT I wouldn't like it and for the toy car I'm not sure I want to mess with an old Porsche. I think the MX-5 will be very hard to beat here. Yes the Longchamp looks nice. Wish I could afford it too. Thanks for the suggestions.

924/944 for a toy (I saw you rejected it for the GT). Mid 80s, so not much older than an MX5, and they are still pretty cheap. But the MX5 is a good car, so if you're set on that, then cool, go get one.

I think this might have been suggested, but what about a 928. Proper GT car in my view. And I'm fairly sure you can get them as a manual.
Or if you are OK with something newer, how about a boxster, or a caymen? Both are supposed to be much better driver's cars than they may appear.

I've seen a manual soarer on a Japanese import place on facebook recently for under £5k so they are out there The 6 cylinder Jags are absolutely fine for reliability. The Maser even has GT in the name! Your original post discounts a lot of GT cars so I'm confused about what you're looking for? If you could live with an auto it would make it a lot easier and give you that lazy, wafty GT quality. Stuff like the Mercedes Benz CL for example This ticks all the boxes for me with the exception on being manual and LHD. The box on a 500 takes some beating but they need regular oil changes (contrary to MB service recommendations), and if you can cope with manually changing the auto' box, (I only have a 5sp 430), it's amazing! I'd avoid a 600 as they seem to be expensive mistresses. The V8's are pretty sound but they have two spark plugs per cylinder so beware servicing!

They are heavier, not as well balanced and definitely not as much fun.

But I wish people would not just skip to the end. The GT issue is closed. 928 has been suggested about 150 times and rejected every single time. Would never spend money on a Boxter or Cayman to be honest. If I ever wanted to buy a Porsche and couldn't afford a "911" it could only be the 928. But not looking for a Porsche at the moment. But thanks for the suggestions just the same.

Just a quick update about the MX-5. Finally test drove one. Had never driven one. It was a MK1, which is what I would want. I can totally understand the enthusiasm and claims of best sports car even made etc. It's truly fun to drive and very enjoyable. It's not the fastest and I know it's not the point. It is really like the cliche saying that it's like driving a gokart. You just don't want to get out of the car. But while I was driving it and enjoying the heck out of it something hit me really hard. I will never be able to share this enjoyment with my 2 most loved ones, at the same time. Because it's a 2-seater. I knew this from the beginning, obviously. But for some reason it only hit me when I was behind the wheel. So this prompted me to look and see if there is anything comparable with a 2+2 configuration? I mean something of a real sports car instead of just a Peugeot 306 cabrio of sorts. I know what you are thinking. Real sports cars are normally 2-seaters. I know this. But I thought I would still look into it. If not, MX-5 it is for the toy car. P.S. I would also love if it was a convertible. I guess the MX-5 spoiled me.

As for weight, it's 1100kg vs 950kg (plus hardtop), and the balance is 48/52. Similar power too (125bhp for the 2.0, which is the cheapest). And the 924 is a 2+2, if you wanted that. But if you want a 2 seat convertible, then an MX5 is great... Cheers Duncan

Ok, you inspired me to take a closer look at the 944. Even though I think the RX-5 looks better and I doubt the Porsche is as cheap to run. But you have a point with the 2+2.
But it doesn't look like they are dirty cheap around here at all, which is a prerequisite for the toy car.
I also looked at the cabriolet since I know they made them. Even more expensive, naturally. But I couldn't tell if it loses the back seat like some other convertible versions of other cars.
All considered though they are too expensive and will probably cost more to run.
If I find a great condition RX-5 for the right price I will definitely get it. A 2+2 would be nice but I have thought about every car I can remember and can't think of another sports car that would be cheap, dependable, simple to run, RWD and a 2+2. Plus having a convertible will be a lot of fun too.
