would it be safe to turn the key?
ive heard of people starting cars without draining the fuel first on cars that have been sitting for a while and screwing up the injectors etc.
would it be safe after about 2 years of sitting round? or can it be started? just that a local car with fuel injection has come up for sale but its been sitting idle last couple years

check the oil, check the water jup leads on and spin her over..... then clean the points and try again

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

turn the engine over on the starter with the ign disabled to get the oil pressure up, then connect up the ign again and start. 2 year old petrol should be ok, it will have deteriorated but there wont be any need to drain it. Filling the tank with fresh petrol to dilute it will help though.. A mate just started up a mini clubman with 7 year old petrol in it no problem.

I'm really sorry about htat skoda. i honestly thought it was just a matter of it had ran out of fuel. it seemed to be working alrite then splutered out down my road and got pushed back on to my lawn. i genuinely thought it was lack of fuel. really sorry about that dude, i wasnt out to profit or anything from it it was passed on the same price i paid - alot less than it could have been weighed in for. this car thats been sat round is relatively new so should be ok i hope, 1998 and japanese so from what you guys have said looks safe.

depends on the car, 2 years should be no bother, ive started cars thathave been sitting for 10 years with just a fresh battery and some fresh juice fed into the carb older cars are more tolerant of this treatment, but you wont find a new car thats been sitting very long, or it wouldnt be new i guess.

Before turning te engine, remove sparkplugs and apply small amount of motoroil for the pistons/pistonrings through the splug hole.

Electric or mechanical fuel pump ? If its eletric i'd be tempted to have it on and check for fuel leaks... check hoses too... 2 years is plenty for a hose to collapse. You could even use the electric pump to drain the fuelif you needto do that... After that BstardChild's "If it starts - kick it in gear and away you go" is not bad advice !

After that BstardChild's "If it starts - kick it in gear and away you go" is not bad advice ! I think it's all to easy to get paranoid about everything and go over the top - if it runs and moves - result. Obviously I should add the cautions about brakes being a bit crusty and clutches being a bit grabby tires being perished so I'm not suggesting you fly to scotland - buy a car that hasn't been run for a couple of years and drive it home just cos it runs - but it has been done!!!

Started the Hornet after it had sat for 20 years. Fresh petrol and a new coil/leads and it fired straight up. Took a bit of effort to get the flywheel free, but it gave way after a bit of 'fine tuning' This is how it came out:

My Panda had been sitting for 5 years and it just needed a bit of fuel hose that had perished replacing, and the electrics cleaning up a bit. I didn't drain the tank, just put a bit of fresh in. The tyres started breaking up after a while, but they were always high on my list of things to replace anyways.
