writing them off is just dumb! Why couldnt they be cleane dwith disinfectant? Or just strip it and get it acid diped and electroprimed. No nasties left then. Silly rules really. Maybe they should let them be sold aslong as they have been properly de contaminated. Theres a business there for someone

the thing is that the law is there to protect the public in the majority of cases. The majority of cases will be a few year old hartch back worth a couple of grand which no trader is going to spend all the time to correctly deal with. Some foms of fungus / spores and stuff would require a full retrim to get rid of, new dash, etc. and add in it would have fried computers, etc. due to water damage its just not economical to do it right so what would happen the car would be Detolled out and resold as was and hope for the best.
1000, 5000 whatever modern hatchbacks vs 3 or 4 retros... You gotta know how the law is looking. This is a small exception and the answer is not to go through the insurance.
None of those cars are soooooo rare that the world will end if they are broken for spares. Its a shame but retros get scrapped every day for less reason than this.

The law about them automatically been written off is to stop dealers selling em on without drying and decontaminating em properly. IIRC they don't have to be written off - if you dry em out properly and decontaminate you can sell them but you've got to tell the buyer than the car has been flood damaged.
4 or 5 years ago we did 5 or 6 brand new range rovers that were contaminated with salt water when they fell off a ship. We got em for about £2k each, stripped them completely, steam cleaned everything, dried em and put em back together and fixed all the faults that came up. We sold em for probably £6-7k less than the normal asking price as we said they were flood damaged. All of them are still going strong I saw one the other day in a dealers and they said it was the best one they'd seen and had never gone wrong.

I think they differentiate between fresh and "foul" water.
Although much of our sea water is pretty foul LOL.

Back a few years now i bought a 1972 beetle that had been 2 foot deep in water. don't believe the people that tell you they are watertight as standard, a tide mark could be seen on the door, seats etc
I cleaned it all out, flushed the engine a few times, made sure it was re - rust proofed and then just drove it for another 6 months, no problems at all.
Classics don't mind a bit of water.

A major flood hit on Monday evening Epicentre: Rotherham, England.
News of the disaster was swiftly carried abroad by the town's 35,000 racing pigeons, as victims were seen wandering around aimlessly muttering "fookinhell" and "chuffinnorah".
The flood decimated the town, causing £30 worth of damage. Several priceless collections of mementos from the Balearic Isles and the Spanish Costa's were damaged beyond repair. Three areas of historical burnt out cars were disturbed.
Many locals were woken well before their Giro arrived. Radio station RotherFM reported that hundreds of residents were confused and bewildered, still trying to come to terms with the fact that something interesting had happened in Rotherham. One resident, 15 year old mother of 3, Tracy Sharon Braithwaite said: "It was such a shock, my little Chardonnay-Madonna came running into my bedroom crying. The twins, Tyler-Morgan and Megan-Storm slept through it all. I was still shaking when I was watching Kilroy the next morning". Locals were determined not to be bowed, as looting, muggings and car crime carried on as normal.
So far, whilst the British Red Cross has managed to ship 4000 crates of Sunny Delight to the area to relieve the suffering of stricken locals, rescue workers searching through the rubble have found large quantities of personal belongings including, benefit books, jewellery from Elizabeth Duke at Argos and bone china from Pound-stretcher.
Can You Help?
Please respond generously to our appeal for food and clothing for the victims of this disaster.
Clothing is needed most of all, especially:
*Fila or Burberry baseball caps
*Kappa tracksuit tops (his or hers)
*Shell suits (female)
White sports socks
*Rockfort boots or any other product sold in Primark
*Culturally sensitive food parcels are harder to put together, but your efforts will make a difference.
*Microwave meals, tinned baked beans, ice-cream and cans of Colt 45 or Special Brew are ideal.
Please do not give anything that requires peeling.
Remember: 22p buys a biro for filling in compensation claims · £2 buys chips, crisps and a blue fizzy drink for a family of 9. £5 will pay for a packet of B&H and a lighter to calm a child's nerves
Urgently required: Tinned whippet food. Bones for Jack Russells
Please do not send tents for shelter. The sight of such posh housing will cause residents to beleive they have been forced to relocate in Sheffield.

Yeah last time we flooded around here I enquired as to when the large numbers of written off cars would be arriving in the salvage yard... he told me they all get cat B'd meaning breaking for parts only. Tis a shame - they do it for health reasons as flood water is graded as sewage, but personally I'd just rip the interior out, fit a bucket seat and be done with it. i was chatting to a farmer once who had a 1 year old tractor get flooded, he said it gets written off due to the risk of hepatitis c will be a shame if they all have to be broken for parts

I didn't exactly expect Rotherham or Sheffield residents to split their sides.
Lighten up! The world is already too full of people who can't take a joke.
Maybe you should move.
