I'm an old school vw guy (for the the last 30 years) it was always the "thing" to do a wave to other owners on the road. I love the retro thing now and run a porsche 924 and always notice a nice ride and give a nice wave or headlight flash but just get ignored ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) no one do the "appreciate your car mate" thing anymore? ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

If they're going quickly, I tend not to, but if we're in queues or in town I generally give an appreciative nod, a thumbs-up or a wave. It's rarely reciprocated but never mind, it's still nice when it is.

I wasn't too sure on the etiquette as I'm recently back in the retro game but after seeing a few other retro's out on the road who acknowledged me with a thumbs up or flash of lights I will be sure to return the gesture ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

The local 'retros' I normally give a wave or flash or a toot, something along them lines. The only ones that I've got it back from was the minis an old Goldy brown chevette and a few mk1 mx5s. Everyone else just gives me a weird look ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

I get it all the time when I'm out in the pickup. I'll always nod or raise a hand or Index finger (NOT flipping the bird) if I'm cornering. (No headlight flash fitted)
I also get it, a;beit to a slightly lesser extent, in the Vitesse. Although I get plenty of looks of bewilderment/disapproval aimed at that too! lol
I even get several moderns a week waving or flashing at me, but they might know who I am and I just don't recognise/know who they are?! :/

It varies, some respond with a friendly wave or flash their headlights, some ignore me.
What's nice is when someone passes an appreciative comment. I always try to do that if possible, at lights or in traffic - but sometimes you get a weird look for being friendly which I guess puts some people off trying to be nice in future.

When my Dad and me went to pick up my first car, a rusty 69 Beetle, he was driving it home and got waved at by a 20 something blonde girl her beetle. He was much more into the car after that.

Indeed. Gives me a bit of a smile, and whenever it happens my other half goes "who is that?".
"Remember Dave?" I say every time. "Oh right" she says back.
Even get it sometimes in my daily content (2005 German).

Often say to owners of retros if parked nice motor and they seem surprised but always say thanks. I never see much of the wave response out on the road but watching this years London to Brighton mini run from a layby near Brighton hundreds waved , blew horns or smiled so mini owners are a very happy community. Often older retro owners appreciate the interest if you spot them in Asda car park which i often have. I am Subaru and not many owners respond by waving but often look to give a cursory glance as they go by. Maybe now life as moved on from the more gentle days of retro ownership. Getting friendly with strangers not so much the done thing now but of course any car show or race meeting as that common denominator and everyone is chatting to someone.

I used to either flash or thumbs up, but have been driving moderns so long that you just get the "who are ya" look.. ![](http://weknowmemes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/that-awkward-moment-when-you-wave-to-someone.jpg)

I find that the owners of certain cars (higher end classics) won't acknowledge either a wave or headlight flash and tend to do the "look straight ahead and don't look at the commoner " bit, giving the feeling that they are too good to be in anyway associated with the likes of someone driving a old Opel.

I give a flash and a wave to anything old and interesting, 99% of the time get a wave or flash back, I sometimes flash to the unknowing old fella/dear driving a car he/she has had since new so they don't get the old car thing.

Anything pre 1980 is uncommon enough to elicit a toot and a wave here but 1990 onward cars are still ten a penny so to speak and most of them are just "normal" people's daily use vehicles. I still get a kick out of people who tell me my '71 Wolseley is cute though, especially when it's a chick saying it.

Some of them totally get the old car thing. I saw an unrestored one owner 1960 Ford Fairlane 500 at a show a couple of years ago and the old geezer was right into it.

My favourite is waving to RX-8 owners when I pass them in the Sevens, as I figure the least the poor deluded sad types deserve is a bit of acknowledgement for driving a rotary, however tragically watered-down it might be. I normally get a perplexed "what the hell is that fool in the old jalopy waving at me for?" kinda bafflement
