www.saxosportsclub.com/ForumsPro/viewtopic/t=17823.htmlalthough you could equally pick up a duff classic which had been "restored" if you were careless. stuff like this makes me worry. About the motor trade and about the caliber of education we are giving younger drivers. Make of it what you will Sadly I'll bet its not an unusual story

Nightmare! If I had 13,000 large to spend on a modern car, I'd only buy from a main dealer... or a highly, highly reputable specialist.
Had a similar thing with a mate who was looking for an A3, the car wasn't dangerous, but it was just a real weird setup, home seller, wanted to do the deal in Tescos car park - alarm bells!

£80 on an inspection is small fry if you are buying a £12000 car. Surely.

Allot of J imports are crash repair from Japan when i brought my starlet turbo i looked at 10 cars all over the country and 7 of them had signs of accident history. Oh and a HPI check would not have shown this up.

Modern cars a lot more complicated and have a lot more moving parts than older cars, and everything now seeems to be computerised.
Il stick to buying cars that i can drive and not have one that drives me.
And older cars have much more character and charm about them that todays platic fantastics

Computers are fun ;D Il stick to buying cars that I can drive and not have one that drives me. I like to drive a car so my interest stops with stuff like brake assist etc etc And older cars have much more character and charm about them that todays platic fantastics I think some of the more modern cars do too but not ones in the mainstream

Maybe I'm being very silly & missing something here, but:
"opened the passenger door to be greeted by what looked like a lot of repair work on the inside of the door skin and and a slightly creased / loose side skirt." - wouldn't most people have noticed that before they bought a car?
"I did notice that the car rattled a bit under the bonnet when above about 5000rpm though." - surely would've noticed this on the test drive, & should've been a huge warning flag especially with a nearly new J car?
"almost every panel being mis-aligned" - again, on a modern car, wouldn't that be fairly easy to spot?
Someone tell me I'm talking curse word, it seems a bit daft to me. I've missed problems like that on £500 runabouts, but if I was splashing out 11-12k I'd be getting my ruler out at least...!!

This is nothing to do with modern. This story is an isolated incident involving a disreputable dealer and an unlucky or possibly stupid customer.
Modern is great. I have a 2000 W reg BMW 328 estate. It goes like the clappers, the air con is lovely, the stereo is great, it is relaxing, comfortable and completely trouble free. Bliss.
This anti-modern attitude is stupid. Retro cars are great but I really don't subscribe to the modern cars are rubbish club.
I love the BMW. And I love retro cars. Moderns are great and retros are great.
Oh, Jeep Cherokees are curse word. But then anybody could tell you that. Americans can't make good cars.

I  my 2005 Octavia vRS, and my 2004 Fabia vRS before that... lovely cars.... but I also still love driving retros and most the cars I aspire to own are of an older persuasion, but day to day, I can't fault my Octy.

the mum has a 2001 fabia 1.4i classic. not a bad car, well built, nippy etc. no major problems as of yet, brakes are naff though, the pads seem to wear through rapidly, she ended up without and padding on the for a while, horrible grinding whilst braking.
smurfys sister has a 206, its head gasket has now gone twice amongst other stuff, cant remember now, but still, terrible things.

That is bloody scary!! But it's not a new problem, IIRC, i've seen buyers guides for Rover SD1's telling people to keep an eye out for 'cut 'n' shut' jobs on these, as it was common place at the time. And don't get me started on MK3/4 Escort cabrio's- I bet 90% of these are dodgy in one way or another

I think its an absolute fluke that both buyers got a refund. sounds like the dealer may be on first name terms with his local trading standards.. and as for new cars and ignorance, I was given a one owner from new '96 Toyota carina e 1.8GS, showing 86,000 for nothing (take away for scrap). The car reportedly needed a head gasket (diagnosis by man in pub on grounds that it used water), so the owner went out and bought a 2000 Chrystler neon auto to replace it. The woman who gave me the toyota told me it had been an excellent car, never needed anything but tyres and fuel, but now its old and knackered. I didn't want to tell her that 1 the toyota only needs a new radiator cap cos the seal is perished 2 there is a 2001 Neon auto in the scrapyard opposite my yard cos it needs a £3000 gearbox
I sold the toyota to a sales pitch. it probably has another 90,000 before its fubar'd, its a toyota........ the neon? I give it 6 months before its on my truck.
New isn't always better, its just more expensive.
