Every now and then I see ideas that just blow my mind, they will not be for everyone, but I like them. On Sunday, Andy who I bought the Dinitrol cavity wax from came in his International, and one of the things I saw were his wheel nuts. Now as some of you may recall, I will be fitting some Rallye wheels and white walls later. However, it would need 24 new chrome wheel nuts, as my wheels have been on and off many times before I bought the truck two years ago, and many since, so the nuts look like this...... This has to be one of the simplest, cheapest and most genius ways of dealing with old wheel nuts. Cut down shotgun shells. My truck will be wearing them, and I do not care if many people copy what I saw on Andy's truck, but I will be doing it too. I already have an order in for a load from a friend who is a groundsman on a large estate. Inspiration, sometimes need not come from your own mind. Thanks Andy.

As above as old as this hills now. Personally I think it looks cheap and tacky. When you have seen them on a bog standard stickered up saxo in tesco car park it's lost any cool points

When you have seen them on a bog standard stickered up saxo in tesco car park it's lost any cool points I think it can be a case of just about anything on a saxo will look cheap and tacky, have seen a TOW sticker and strap on similar, which on a drifter would be appropriate, on a kiddy car it just looks like it keeps breaking down. Ps I hadn't seen them as nut covers but have seen them as lighter cases Ttfn Glenn

Especially when you have a yank that has so many options for dressing up wheels.

Slacker, I am surprised I never saw them before. But played out or not, I will give them a go. My newly blasted and coated wheels may end up looking totally gash with caps in which case it will be new chrome nuts.
But in the mean time, there may be a whole family of us under that rock.

Not something I've seen either so if there's room I'll squeeze in under the rock. On a big old 'redneck' truck they suit much better than a Saxo!

Shotgun casings with plastic body aren't solid brass but rather brass plated steel. That means you need to spray them with lacquer to keep rust at bay. There are some solid brass casings but not very common. This is what I've learn from another web site where people did the same as Grizz and wondered why they went rusty. BTW I like the idea

Nice thing about this forum is that we all learn from each other.

Is that your current nuts? I have to say they look quite nice. Nice shiny nuts. In other news: Cartridge nut covers appeared on a few cars. Those V'Dubbers were already at it in 2013. They're probably much more relevant to an american classic truck though.

Hi Simon, Yes, they are my wheel nuts that came with the chrome smoothies on the truck, not sure when last you looked at my trucks status, but the Smoothies are gone, replaced with a set of red Rallye wheels n trims, waiting for a set of sensibly priced two inch white walls (yes, I am a pita) The rolling about wheels on the truck belong to Jabbo (Scott) as they were planned for the Cressida........ I think. I guess a bit like getting run over by a bus, sometimes it's just wrong time, right place..... Weirdly, I had never seen them done. And as you say, possibly more in place on a truck, but again, may not suit my wheels etc, in which case I will buy and fit a new set of nuts, at the money that I am spending the trucks resto, this will be a small spend. So all still a bit under discussion. Without ring.

I think I prefer it without the trim. Although, I think the narrower trim might suit it better still...showing a bit of rim on the outer edge seems a bit more hot rod to me.

If that's ypur wheel choice ^^*^^^ "bullet" nuts would look so much better. It is. Too many people have Chrome Smoothies so I wanted something unusual within this market. Rarely see trucks with Rallyes in the UK. In fact not sure I have seen them on a 60-66 before. Always open to suggestions and advice. The dream would be Torque Thrusts in 5 spoke with a 5 lug conversion uit when do you stop spending ??

If that's ypur wheel choice ^^*^^^ "bullet" nuts would look so much better. Trouble is size. Even a .50 cal casing is going to be too small to go over a truck wheel nut. You'd be looking at something more like a 20mm shell casing to be usable. I suppose you could cast something in resin after making a mould out of shaped wood & latex then spraying brass colour.

As with compo , I'm guessing you are going to need a 20mm cannon shell at least - may not be that common with your mate unless he deals with very big bang sticks . Would be better if you knew someone in the navy really [ more anti aircraft stuff ] .
I say do it Grizz , ive never seen it before either and couldnt give a monkeys if someone stuck some on a golf a few years ago - it goes better with a pick up than a hatchback anyway !
EDIT- might be able to get a 30 mm from a rarden cannon from a light tank .
