Firstly apologies for this being a pretty boring thread but i wanted somewhere to post what I've been up to recently. A few months back a old friend who i used to work for when i was 14-17 and still at school as a Saturday/school holiday job contacted me asking if i knew anyone after a old Sierra as he had one in a barn that needed to go, i wasn't really interested but i said I'd come over and take a look at some point. Fast forwards a few weeks later and he phoned me again having seen me working on my old Mk1 Cortina round my dads and asked if i wanted to come up to another barn he owns to show him the car, whilst i was there he showed me his old Orion 1.6i Ghia had he's owned since 1989, He used to take me to shows in it back in the 90's and i spent many hours washing it when i worked for him, in 2000 he decided to park it in a barn as it wasn't being used. 1988 Ford Orion 1.6i Ghia1988 Ford Orion 1.6i GhiaI've been after this car for years and he's given me first refusal on it but he still talks of getting it on the road again, I can't see that happening as he's 60 now, It's only done 35000 miles from new. 1988 Ford Orion 1.6i Ghia1988 Ford Orion 1.6i GhiaHis old Transit van still sits there too which be bought new, that's been sat there since 2005. 1993 Ford Transit 2.5d CustomAnyway we had another chat about the Sierra and i agreed to pop over and take a look at it. A few weeks later i met him at his other barn and had a look at this car, it was traded to his brother in payment of a job years ago, he used it for a year or so until the mot ran out and parked it up, 9 years ago!. 1991 Ford Sierra 1.8 LX1991 Ford Sierra 1.8 LXWalking around it it wasn't too bad, both inner and outer rear sills were rusty but repairable, all the tyres perished and it was very dusty but it still started and run fine on the stale old petrol. [/a] 1991 Ford Sierra 1.8 LX by Michael Carpenter, on Flickr 1991 Ford Sierra 1.8 LXHe told me what he wanted for it, pretty much what a type 9 gearbox is worth on it's own, I decided that i might as well buy it to save it, most people would have just broke it for spares!

In the same barn is this Ital Van, that's sat here since 2000 too, I remember him buying it in 1994 and having to clear it out, the old plumbers equipment is still in the back! It's only done 41000 miles from new, I have expressed an interest in it and he does want it gone but it also belongs to his brother who seems to think the A41 SHK number plate is worth a fortune and wants a mot put back on it so he can remove it, I'm going to play the waiting game on that as it won't be going anywhere soon. 1984 Morris Ital 575 Van1984 Morris Ital 575 Van1984 Morris Ital 575 Van1984 Morris Ital 575 VanI think that will need a lot of work TBH, it has some nasty holes in it, I've offered £400 for it, I don't know if that's too much though!. Back to the Sierra, my friend offered to deliver the car for me to my dad's so i offered to help him, so a very wet Saturday about a month ago we went car transporting, we had to move a Mk2 Granada belonging to a customer of his first. This was parked up in a barn back in 2003 when the autobox spring a leak but they have decided to get it back on the road again, it's been owned by the family since new. 1984 Ford Granada 2.8 Ghia1984 Ford Granada 2.8 Ghia1984 Ford Granada 2.8 GhiaThis Mk2 Cortina was in the same yard, it's been here since 1985. 1968 Ford Cortina 1600 SuperThen it was onto moving my Sierra. My 1991 Ford Sierra 1.8 LXMy 1991 Ford Sierra 1.8 LXMy 1991 Ford Sierra 1.8 LXDriving it up and down the farm track showed that 9 years in a barn hadn't done it too much harm, it drove, stopped and steered like it should, the brakes were snatchy and it run a but lumpy but the petrols 9 years old, so i got it to dad's and gave it a wash for the first time. I managed to butter my dad up to help me with this project by selling him my Mk1 Cortina on the cheap, it seemed to have worked!, I don't think i ever posted photos of that, I had to sell it as my wife is pregnant and i can't afford that as well as my Mk3, the sacrifices we have to make! 1966 Ford Cortina 1500 Super Mk11966 Ford Cortina 1500 Super Mk1Going from that to a £250 Sierra is a bit of a backwards step i can tell you!. So first job was to get the car running better, new plugs, leads, fresh fuel and some carb cleaner got it running better although it still needs a bit of playing with, i think the auto choke needs cleaning, next was to get a friend who's the village mechainc to price up the welding, he quoted £100 for all the work which again seems very fair. My 1991 Ford Sierra 1.8 LXNext job was to strip the rear brakes, as expected they weren't great. so a pair of new cylinders, new rear brake pipes, new rear hose and a CV boot, bleed the brakes as well as a good clean and grease up got everything working again as well as the handbrake which didn't work when i got it, result. My 1991 Ford Sierra 1.8 LX by Michael Carpenter, on Flickr Someone gave me a new set of Mintex discs for it at a car show which was super handy as mine were knackered so fitted those as well as some new pads and another clean up got the front end all nice and sorted again. As the tyres were shot i decided to hunt for a set of secondhand alloys to get it through the MOT rather than messing about with new tyres, i managed to score a set of Focus Edge alloys for under £40 with really good tyres. The only trouble is the offset is all wrong all the driveshaft nut on the rear pops the caps off and on the front they hit the shock, a set of 5mm spacers had to be fitted to sort that. On Saturday we fitted a new cambelt and water pump, the last belt was at 71000 miles in 1998, it's now done 105000 miles although the old belt was good once removed it anyway. My 1991 Ford Sierra 1.8 LXMy 1991 Ford Sierra 1.8 LXI've cleaned the interior up too, it's come up really well, the old Ford radio doesn't work so I've fitted a old CD player for now. The Transit it is a proper old thing, It's a 2.5D Custom with a one piece rear door and really comfy (for 1993) velour seats and higher spec radio, the paint and door mirror spoiler thingy would all have been a extra too.
He says it still starts and runs, the only reason it was parked up was because he's a agricultural engineer and in the early 00's there was a foot and mouth scare so it had to be washed with detergent when coming in and out of of farms and it's rotted all the subframe out, there's gabbing great holes in the chassis behind the rear wheels.

That Mk1 Cortina takes me back. When I was a kid my dad had a primer grey coloured 1500 Super, MYH 528D. It was completely rotten even back then in the late 80's, I wonder what became of it.

Looks good with the pre facelift bumpers The later ones are made out of some dodgy plastic that does not seem to last very well!

The Sierra is a rare old beast now...! It looks like that save you've made is a wise one sir.
I had an H-reg 2.0i GLX estate years back and I loved it... The only problem was was the fact that it wasn't spec'd with PAS so the steering at parking speeds was ruddy heavy! Couple that with a dodgy adjustable steering column lock and it made for some interesting moments in car parks...!!!!!! It was BLOODY quick though...
Anyhow, enough of my memories.
This Sierra will look absolutely crackerjack with those Cosworth alloys fitted. I cannot wait to see that moment...

Yeah I'd prefer the van too if I'm honest but at least it's inside in the dry. Progress has been a bit slow on this as late, We've finished all the little jobs that needed doing, stripped down the auto choke which was all furred up so it's now running better and fitted a new rad fan switch so that's working now, The only trouble is the garage who's doing the welding can't fit it in for another week so I'm having to wait for now. On the plus side the Cossie wheels are done, I never want to do another set again!, What fiddly buggers to do! They aren't perfect but considering how bad they were they are good enough. So whilst i wait to get the car home and swap tyres around I've been helping a friend with a Morris Marina he owns. 1972 Morris Marina 1300 Deluxe1972 Morris Marina 1300 DeluxeIt's been in a garage since 1987 after it's 1st owner parked it up after 72000 miles, the plan is to try and get it roadworthy ready for the BL/BMC day in Peterborough next year. 1972 Morris Marina 1300 DeluxeIt needs some work!, there's a few of us helping with it, It's needs a fair bit of welding, dash putting back together and new brakes all round, it does run and drive though!. 1972 Morris Marina 1300 Deluxe1972 Morris Marina 1300 Deluxe1972 Morris Marina 1300 Deluxe1972 Morris Marina 1300 DeluxeThe front valance is missing!. 1972 Morris Marina 1300 DeluxeThis can't be right! 1972 Morris Marina 1300 Deluxe1972 Morris Marina 1300 Deluxeand this little pile was out of the sill alone!. 1972 Morris Marina 1300 Deluxe

Loads of great pictures here. I like the Sierra - it's a real time capsule for me. And that Marina! Looks like you're having a laugh.
