Yeah just a scrap p5b is rarer than hen's danglies. It also involves the massive hassle of getting a 1600kg beast transported in order to strip the right bits. In terms of ease of getting the bits together the 24v opel idea seems easiest. It is then a case of drilling out somewhere for the gearlever to go and finding a 'stick shift' central column from a p5b. Get a custom prop made up and let the guys at the garage worry about getting the engine running (electrics-wise) and mounted.
BC do you know what kind of sump the 24valvers have is the rear dropped? In terms of bhp the 24v is not going to be far off 200with a decent manifold and exhaust.
But yeah if I happen across a p5b subframe (or if anyone else does) then I would plump for the v8 option.

I was thinking about this last night (coz I'm that sad!) and thought, have you considered a Lexus V8?
260-280bhp odd, bulletproof and fairly cheap to buy as theres no demand for them!

I had but i remember working out a while back that due to the supidly limited space in the engine bay of the rover one wouldn't fit. Otherwise it would have been perfek - economy, power, smoothness etc etc etc.

Are you keeping it straight-six to be true to the original engine, or because chucking a Rover V8 in would be too predictable? Put a Subaru flat-six in there.

I would love to see the look on anorak wearers' faces if that ever happened. The straight six is just because it's the same as the current lay out so has some chance of fitting. The rover v8 thing is another reason - as it's the done thing.

Yeah that's the obvious alternative i'm pondering. The only one I can find is a complete senator. Kinda feel guilty ripping the engine out. Why - it's likely to have rear chassis rot and no rear arches left - no guilt needed Ho hum, choices and decisions. But then I'd have the complete car to pillage for bits. As you can tell I'm beyond caring what the anoraks think. Always helps when you realise the bit you forgot to remove

I have a M30 engne from an E28 still attatched to my engine hoist?! as I havent found somewhere to leave it yet. If you need measurements from It I will gladly run a tape over it so you can get an idea of the size it was on ebay recently but did not sell - 182bhp and 200lb/ft torque. Also my e34 535 manual delivered over 30mpg when I was over in germany using autobhans 5th gear motorway at 80mph the car was just crusing along.

BC do you know what kind of sump the 24valvers have is the rear dropped? 24V's fitted with alloy sump - has main well in the front section In terms of bhp the 24v is not going to be far off 200with a decent manifold and exhaust. They come with a decent manifold (cast iron) 204 out of the stock box and even when leggy rarely drop below 190 at the crank Exhausts don't matter much pretty much anything works as long as pipe size is 2 - 2.25 inch Induction mods make the most difference along with a bit of ECU mods - bigger TB and 20 mins with a grinder on the ports can make a huge difference. Biggest weaknesses are: Any engine with 130K plus will need a head gasket if it hasn't had one already (most have so don't panic) They can snap a chain if poorly maintained (oil sludges up the tensioner and the guides wear rapidly) I've been doing HD chains for them for years but most of the issues arise from guides and tensioner rather than weak chains

If you could possibly do that that would be excellent. Most important thing would be from the bottom of the sump to the top of the rocker cover. Fankoo.
