After years of going to car shows and not being a part of one myself... I'm pretty excited to announce my car has been selected for the "Concours de l’Ordinaire " for Festival Of The Unexceptional!! I've wanted to go to this for the two years previous but, with work commitments mean i always missed it. For my car to be judged is amazing! very exciting!! I definitely need to touch a few things up near the time. Bumpers, Wheels and I also need to clean the seats and door cards too as it is now my daily. Other things are finding a good way to clean and protect the engine bay and creating an 80s stripe like this... Any advice on how to do this would be appreciated. I don't want to buy anything cheap that will damage the paint but... id also like to do it for cheap. I was thinking something like this?? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Solid-6mm-50m-Roll-Sticky-Self-Adhesive-Pin-Stripe-Vinyl-Decal-Tape-Car-Styling/181595113851?hash=item2a47e9897b:m:my2Cawy1XdVT_d6tZbFW9eAThe thing I'm probably most into, is trying to make it period correct for the show... I'm thinking of going late 80s early 90s with it as its the kind of car that would have been cheap and available then. I'm not thinking of changing it in anyway such as XR3 wheels etc. just little things like window stickers, putting the cassette deck back in of course and maybe adding a Flat Eric for the back window?? I'd love some of those "Knuckle Buffers" for the boot lid if i could find some that aren't £80!!! Interested to know what you guys would do? Also anyone previously been to Festival of the Unexceptional? Heres a few recent pics i used to enter it into the event.

Clean it, stick the tape deck back in, that's it. It's a miraculous survivor as is and doesn't need dressing up at all. This is how you use the car, pretty much how it's been for its whole life, so why change that? It got in on the strength of the photos of it in unmolested form and that's exactly how you ought to present it.
Be proud of it just the way it is, that's what you've achieved and it doesn't need anything more to be exceptional in its own right.

Very true!! i just fancied giving it a theme for the show but, your right it is what it is! Just needs a clean and a tidy up really. Still want to find some side stripes for it though, i think it misses those from the re-spray. Haha!!! it took me a while to get that one (pre coffee here)! I was looking for a sun visor a few weeks back as it was getting blinded driving down the motorway. Not seen anything quite right yet! Maybe I'll stick with the Oasis cassettes and Adidas jacket for now. Still excited about the whole thing. i've had this car 5 years and missed every show there is!!

Update from the weekend. Saturday i headed off to "Festival of the Unexceptional" at Stowe House. This is a show i've wanted to attend for a few years now and i was honoured to have the Escort selected to be judged in the concours section. The journey was about 1h20 from home so i left around 8am to give myself some time with a stop on the way. Some great cars on the way into the show... The magnum P.I. Ferrari was a bit out of place though... When i pulled into the concours section i was more than happy to be guided in by Danny Hopkins (editor for Practical Classics) . Somehow i'd lost a lot of time (probably chatting to a guy with a Nova at the services) and my Car was one of the first to be Judged. I set about using some Greased Lightning Showroom Shine I borrowed from a mate to get the flys off, i was pretty impressed to be honest!! It looked great! Edd China seemed to like it!! I took the opportunity to get out all my 80s stuff out to add to the cars image. A lot of people loved the touch of the cassette tapes, deck and the Minolta 35mm Camera on the passenger seat... in reality its stuff i use quite regularly which hopefully added some authenticity to it. Which cassette would you choose ? The mini C64 is new but i thought why not. Some Cracking cars at the event... you just don't get these colours anymore do you! I didnt realised that the Judges weren't that bothered about the car actually being concours but more in the story behind it. Some of the stories that went with the cars were fantastic, i would never have competed with them as i hardly know anything about my car. It was interesting to know that the MFL reg of the Escort is from Peterborough . This is the area i bought it from 5 years ago but, the original plates i have say Potters Bar on them. I'd love to know more after learning this. I hear that the DLVA have locked down on giving out the details of cars/previous owners? Loved that Beige Sierra !! These 3 cars must have been the most common cars at Tescos in the early 90s Had a quick chat with Edd at the end. What a nice bloke! We had a couple of mutual musician mates and i could help but get a selfie. A couple of journalist asked me about the car and took photos so hoping it apears in Classic Car Weekly this week... not sure what the other article was for. Hope to get back next year too... it really made me want to buy a second beige run around!!

Looks like a great show. Still enjoying your thread Thanks mate!! good to hear! I'm getting more and more into this car over the years. Although theres not much to do on the car these days, i'll try keep it up dated. More just slight running issues. It's nice to see it getting some love off other people too. Heres another from the shows facebook.

Does anyone have any tips for tracking your cars history down? I tried to Email the DVLA but they wouldnt give me anything. (mentioned previous owners and they seemed to freak out). Would love to know where this was originally bought.

Would love the original Dealer Sticker. All i have to go off is people at the show saying MFL is either Cambridge or Peterborough and the original plates for it say "Souther Cross Garages LTD" MKT Deeping & Potters Bar. Just googled Market Deeping and i guess its where it could be from! Anyone heard of Southern Cross Garages?? I guess this would have been a later independent garage and not the Original Sale from Ford? This might be a silly question but, in the mid 80s would a new Ford Escort had to have been sold through a big Ford branch? or could an independent Garage sell a new car such as this one? I only say that as i struggle to find any pictures of a Ford garage littered with Red 1.1 Escorts... i imagine this would be the case at some point, somewhere??

They might be the original plates as market deeping is in the peterbrough area. FL was normally a peterbrough area regerstration some times used in the Cambridge area.

The Escort made the magazines!!! Always wanted to get it in a Classic Car mag of some sort and Classic Car Weekly stopped me in time before leaving the show... I was still trying to make the effort wearing my period Bruce Springsteen T-shirt and adidas clothing even though it was baking hot This has all started me wanting a second daily to take the strain off the Escort.. hmmmm
