I believe the E39 was one of the first BMWs to also come with an ally rear subframe so that would be worth checking for damage as well.

I haven't read the comments on this thread;
But it will definitely need a new rear quarter, door will either be a second hand jobby (if they're trying to keep it away from being a write off) or a new door skin. The inner edge of the door jam may well be slightly kinked. And where the bumper has came away slightly, i'm almost certain that the panel behind will be slightly warped too. The wheel will be changed. Most garages will take the car for an alignment check straight away, which may well show up a few horrors, but may not!
I'd say the chances of that being repaired without being written off are practically zero.

Bodyshop is awaiting prices for a few parts before they break the news to me.
Saw a 320d touring locally on the walk back from work. May get that instead if the payout is good.

Bodyshop figure £3,000 to repair.
Cosmetic damage plus upper and lower control arms on that wheel. At this point I'd just bash the wing out and rattle can it with some shade of silver and to hell with the looks.
My only concern is that if the body shop are wrong about the rear suspension damage, I could be looking at alignment issues and a world of pain making it right if it's more than the two arms.
Any thoughts?
What are these worth in bits if I was to break it? I assume injectors and turbo are easy sells, beyond that... is it even worth breaking?
EDIT: alloy and tyre too obviously. I'd just buy a cheap alloy that fits for the spare. I needed rear tyres anyway so no biggie.

Can you approach the wagon owners directly with the quote? I wouldn't be surprised if they just paid you out as a full and final settlement rather than risk putting their insurance up and paying out for a loan car, whiplash, loss of earnings etc.
