I got thinking tonight there are certain songs or albums that remind me of cars I've owned. Examples here, and some records stay with me as I am terrible for leaving a single CD in for months at a time.
When I first passed my test in 1997 I had a Rover 416 and the previous owner had fitted a high end sound system, I used to blast Prodigy's Fat of the Land.
I had a mk5 derv escort, I bought that so I could do big motorway miles in 2005 up and down to my lasses house, Kanye West's Gold digger was always on the radio.
Last autumn I had a mx5, I left Queens of the stoneage's Rated R in the disc player for the few month that I owned it.
Has anyone else got a song/album that reminds them of their old ride?

had a '83 mini, bright orange, 1L, nowt special but it had a under dash tape player, lil thing, no radio, only tape I had was Killing Joke... Love Like Blood, Friday night, on my way home from work down the M1, which was only a couple of junctions tbh, usually raining, windows open, 80 at a push, excellent, this was over 20 years ago though, home, Sh, Sh, Sh, and down to the Tap and Tumbler in Notts, great days

Islands in the Stream by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers will always remind me of a certain large breasted girl who used to cruise with me in my '51 Vanguard back in the '80s. Had a battery operated cassette player because the car has no radio just a factory hole in the dashboard. Running Down the Dream by Tom Petty reminds me of many hours in the shed working on an Austin 1300 off-roader project that never got finished also in the '80s as it was being thrashed on the radio at the time.

Tina Turner's simply the best, in my dark blue with black vinyl roof Mk2 cortina 1600e, driving down the narrow lanes in St Ives town with my best friend Russ, playing out of an Alpine 7618r connected to a Kenwood graphic equaliser, that was connected to a Nakamichi mono amp running a celestion Ad12 sub , two Philips dap 900 2 channel amps running alpine 6 X 9s and kef components up front, it was the summer and we were young it was such a good time for us, we didn't need to use the horn once as Tina was giving it large and cleared the road of pedestrians for us, my mate Russ recently passed away and I have fond memories of us driving, posing, cruising and having a laugh, Good times!

This: In this: Little sub behind the seats pumping out the tunes, a box of 12" vinyl under the bonnet from a club gig I'd just done, my new girlfriend (we'd been together for about a month) in the passenger seat. Lots of things have changed, but then not much has either. Still driving low cars, still doing the same 'job', been married to the girl for nineteen years...not played that song in a while though.

I hope your Wife/children don't read Retro-Rides Dan!
£300 cars are still about Dan, they're just newer. I'm guessing you mean the V8 Herald? I sold it to a chap in Sweden (I think it was Sweden, anyway)...in the end I realised it just wasn't me...and I needed the cash/space.

Well for me my most vivid album/classic car memory was from waaaaaaaaay way back when I bought a Ford Cortina 1.6GL (HBK 280X, I miss you!)...
I played Duran Duran's Rio album on a loop whilst I drove the old beast around for a couple of hours... I will remember that for the rest of my life I think!!!
Oh for that time machine...

Meatloaf's "Bat out of Hell" album always reminds me of my J reg Triumph 1500 FWD. It was being played over and over again on our old mono record player when I was planning a skiing trip to Switzerland in late 70's. Eventually I booked a deal that was car ferry, two nights stay in hotels on journey to ski resort, 2 weeks skiing and return - all in our own car. Then good old BL went on strike so I couldn't get essential parts needed for repairs so had to cancel at last minute and lost a small fortune on a non refundable deposit !

And vice versa.

When I bought my '71 Wolseley 1300 in '06 the radio was set on the concert programme which I don't like so I started pushing the preset buttons and got Steppenwolf pumping out Magic Carpet Ride. I thought "alright, something that would have been on the radio when this car was new" and wound the volume right up.

Most of my cars remind me of either Hawkwind, New Model Army or the Levellers. Sometimes all three...
I was quite badly traumatised by a Tina Turner tape though. My mum used to have a Polo breadvan and she let me use it for a month for the price of me ferrying her to the airport to catch her flight to Aus. She did mention the stereo seemed to be knackered. She wasn't wrong; a Tina ******g Turner tape on constant auto-reverse loop and you couldn't eject the [fox picture] thing. Eventually I got to hate it so much I ended up dismantling half the dash to get the stereo out, only to find she'd wedged another tape in when the Tina Turner one was already playing. She must have been stronger than she looked, cos the second tape was stuffed in between the tape cradle and the case of the stereo so it still played fine but you couldn't eject either of them. Took quite a bit of dismantling to extricate it, but it was worth it simply to be free from the Curse of Tina. Even now Nutbush City Limits affects me like Inspector Dreyfuss hearing the word "Clouseau"

Metallica, Blackened. Reminds me of being 17 and driving my '92 106 1.0XN. The car had no stereo when I bought it, found an old tape player in a skip, put it in and low it worked.... sort of. It would only play two tapes I owned, Pink Floyd, The Division bell and Metallica, And Justice for all.... it chewed the Division Bell.... leaving Metallica. The opening track was my favorite.
I still have the tape and play it on occasion..... LOUD!
