I got the front suspension stripped pretty quickly - after struggling to make a spring compressor, I ended up doing it "gypsy" style. (Undoing the lower wisbone pivot bolt, withdrawing the pivot bolt at arms length, and boioioing!) This gives me time to find the correct tool, as there is absolutely no way it can be assembled without one. All the ball joints were pressed out/unbolted pretty quickly, but the rubber bushes - it took two hours of cutting and hammering to get just one out without damaging the wishbone! Theres 9 more to remove

What blinding progress mate, nice to see it's being fully stripped down. Now i'm assuming the front suspension items are getting blasted and satin black powdercoated Also engine mounts should be mid blue too.

Your getting on well with this. I did work experience at A Vauxhall dealership and they had a Manta in for major body repairs. The lower suspension arm had nee badly bent and the springs was almost going to pop out. Their preferred method of removal was the longest lever bar they could find (about 6 ft) and open the workshop door. Needless to say it came out quite easily and headed at speed straight out the door and didn't hit anything fortunately. .

It will all be getting blasted, but I'll probably use POR15 black. Your getting on well with this. I did work experience at A Vauxhall dealership and they had a Manta in for major body repairs. Got the last two out in a little over two hours - I must be getting more proficient The rear two were by far the hardest, but not likely to be a problem for me any more - a full set of polyurethane bushes will be fitted when it goes back together.

Took out the servo and brake lines today, was cold as a penguin's chuff! I then took a wire wheel to the Swan neck areas of the chassis. Both sides of the passenger side were spot on. The driver's side wasn't so good. The list of stuff for my main welder bloke to do just got bigger! (He's gonna do it all over Christmas due to being super busy.) Made myself busy with some more stripping now that theres nothing in the way any more. Made a start on the engine bay. On the way out there was some kind of aviation based witchcraft going on in the sky!

Bad news about the swan necks but it'll repair. The above photo appears to show a welded joint, i can't imagine this would be factory.

The nearside inner wing and chassis leg was replaced after a crash in the mid 80s. The entire nosecone/front end was replaced too!

Found another couple of hours to spend on this today - I brought a borrowed engine stand to the unit, then got stuck in cleaning the engine bay back. I hope to have the whole engine bay done over the weekend.

With the spring compressors I just use regular ones you would buy from Halfords but with about 1/3 cut off the length of them Placed in the 10 to 2 position on the spring, with the tensioning bolt facing downwards the thread of the compressor then pass's thru the gap between the spring and the upper wishbone without fouling on anything. Not entirely ideal, but i have had my springs in and out about 5 times now and it works pretty well

Cheers for that - it gives me a plan if I can't find the correct tool when the time comes!

Just lacquer that engine bay as is....... I'd like to do that on something one day, but this is not the car for that look. I got the chance to make a start on the front panels this evening. I need to do a load of overtime at work for the next couple of weeks, so may not get another go at it for a while.
