And in other news. I have found another grinder. Not the grinder to grind the grinder that grinds the shaft that Johnny built. Oh no. That would be too nursery rhyme ish, tell the kids of today ,and they would never believe you... It's one similar to this It's made but Jones and Shipman. Currently residing in Tamworth ,but not for much longer. Comes from a good ,non smoking family, and doesn't need rebuilding. Big sigh of relief I hear ! It's used for grinding centres. Well, actually centres in a shaft. When you make a long shaft, you centre drill both ends so you can support the shaft accurately. When you send a shaft for stress relieving, they normally come back bent. The centres will no longer be perfectly inline. This machine regrinds the centres,so they are inline again. Bit of an extreme investment to grind just to centres in a shaft. But wait. There's more. That's not all. Just like a cheesy shopping channel ad. I think, and at this stage it's pure speculation, that this could be used with a small modification,to sort out the oil channels in the shaft. So, if I can get all my ducks in a row,it will be load grinder on truck. Drop that off for grinding en route to Tamworth. Job done. What can go wrong?...... I wondered whatone of these was! A guy I know had one on eBay amonth ago and listed it as a honing machine!

Carried on cleaning up the table of the grinder Going up to Nuneaton tomorrow to discuss the way forward with this, with slideway services. Need to repair the skirts. Big chunk missing out the back. No point sorting the slideways with that bit missing, may as well put a funnel there and pour grinding paste into the slides. Need to repair that. Slowly getting years of grime off. Going to be an interesting day tomorrow

Sorry for causing problems On the bright side if you ever need to create miniature models of buildings with corrugated roofs you know the tools and setup to use.

Great road trip today. Great weather. Got the work aspect of it sorted out with a delivery to West Brom. Then off to Tamworth to collect the centre grinder. Great Oldboy who is retiring. Genuinely wish I lived closer to him,a very intelligent man. Generous too. Gave me this when I told him what I was up to Nice set of bench centres so I can see how much the shaft warps after heat treatment. Also found this What are the chances of finding the correct radius dressing tool for a 70 year old grinder? What are the odds of finding a brand new one, never used? Off to get a lotto ticket....

Nice bit of heritage with the centre grinder. Sure it will make this car fly...... Just about sums up the years of 'development'. From a tacky old piece of stamped brass plaque, to a lovingly hand crafted and hi-tech bit of sticky paper and a bar code! And if it's of any interest, the "GeorgeB Wooden Cart and Bridal Emporium" has just released a distance learning Voodoo Correspondence Course. Very reasonable rates and, of course, a free mother of six thrown in as well. All tastefully packaged using only recycled materials. A bit like the contents really!

If making the new nut for lead screw becomes too much of a nightmare due to trying to get the backlash down, could you make two nuts and an extended housing for them and pre-load them against each other to control backlash, like they did on bridgeports?

It won't be a problem. More of a nightmare / work making it three piece, for no gain at all. Unlike a milling machine or lathe where you want as little as possible back lash in both directions, the grinder only grinds in one direction, ie, with the wheel going forward. So you only need to eliminate backlash in one direction, hence the use of a counterweight to pull the nut tight up against the spindle.

Had work to do today so no machining. Tomorrow is another day. Saw this. Imagine how much more I could get in a skip, hahaha Is it just me or can you imagine this in a James Bond film with Bond being dangled over the edge or a villain getting dropped in. Maybe I just have a very warped imagination.

Got tired of playing with my nuts every morning and lunchtime. So today was the day I took the plunge Nothing went bang, which is always a good start. Looks thread like. Also good Wonder if it fits?

It only fits. Miracles never cease. It's a beautiful fit too. Not the finest thread I ever did make. That would be this... A part of a scope on a snipers rifle. 60 threads per inch with a depth of 0,07mm. Slightly different to today's thread with 5 threads per inch and a depth of 2,85mm. Both fit perfectly though Old nut on and measure backlash Totally shagged. 1,3mm backlash New nut on. Tight on the beginning of the thread where it's still original size. Couldn't make it any tighter or it wouldn't go on. Turned into the middle of the thread and measured 0,08mm backlash.Counterweight will make short work of eliminating that. That will do..... Also managed to get my head around machining the Higbee start. Also a success

A blunt start Like that tends to wipe the horse exhaust off the leadscrew instead of drawing it into the thread. Scrapes it out the way....
