Cleaned off the paint from the coolant tank sidepanel That hasn't been read in along time. Removed the coolant, devoid of sky juice, but with added iron That's the last of the really manky jobs done on the grinder. Did find this in the coolant tank, the other missing cross from the traverse gearbox coupling Judging by how worn that is,I will change my idea that the shaft jumped out following a smash up. That's just shagged....

Cool, this thread just gets better and better, car restoring, tool making, machine inventing and now archaeology. This is fab stuff.

Well. I don't really know what to say. My Flabber has been well and truly gasted again. I started this wee thread a year ago today,as a way of letting a couple of friends keep track of me and my Mazda' s progress. A look into my little world. The past year has high lighted a couple of things. Not much progress on the Mazda, hahaha. So, happy Birthday Johnny Bravo thread Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would get the response it has had. Truly humbled. Thought at best I would get a couple of hundred views. Never in a million years,...err ,one year did I think it would receive over 85 000 views. So, thanks to everyone that's contributed. Thanks to all the lurkers out there. I would class myself more of a lurker on this forum ,rather than a contributor. There are a lot of threads I follow on here. Don't comment on a lot of them, but some truly inspirational stuff. Thanks to Hotwire and Rmad for doing the thankless task of trying to keep us lot on here in check, and hosting this forum.. So, what does the future hold? More of the same I would say. More running around like a blue rrrs fly. Flitting from one heap to the next. Grinder will get finished. As will the pullmax. Work on the three rotor motor project continues. More body parts, ooh, that sounds a bit too Jack the Ripper ish, will be arriving in June. And one day, just one day,it will all come together, and Ike, the flat pack Rx 2 will gather himself up and brap along to the gathering... Three rotor goodness, measuring up time again It's highlighted what could of been a very expensive mistake. I took my measurements for the shaft, off what I thought was a 13b shaft. Note the word ,"thought". Too much thoughting is never a good thing. It should be replaced with a fox like image. It turns out it wasn't a 13b shaft, but rather a 12a shaft. And if I had continued down that route, I would have been in for a very nasty suprise when I came to assemble the motor, only to find the lobes where the rotors run, 10mm too close together. So, in keeping with tradition...... ...into the skip you go... Back to the drawing board. So there you have it. A lot of my mistakes, and I do make more than my fair share, are salvageable. Some of them are not. Take it on the chin, write it off to experience. Measure more and thought less... Peace and Vegetable rights to all..Johnny Bravo out.....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY THREAD !!
Cake all round.
It's amazing how threads pick up counts, my GJ thread is about to strike 610k views so this thread it seems will continue to grow views, as long as you keep us entertained.
And that you certainly do.

Happy Birfday mate, B-mmer about the shaft, but better you find it now than you machine the finished item only to find it don't fit, I have several of thos postcards over the years

Not really bothered about the shaft. It was more to prove an idea I had on how to machine the shaft. It was machined out of unknown material from an old conveyer drive shaft, and, as such, was never destined to run. I didn't want to commit to a 45kg billet of alloy steel until I was sure I could machine it. So it served it's purpose.

I thought 'YAY!!! AN ENGINE!!' Only to have my hopes dashed with metal heading for the great scrapyard in the sky This does however mean you will be making more, and that I really love, keep whittling them as I am living vicariously through you! J

Thanks for all the kind words guys. In other news, this turned up yesterday No prizes for guessing what that's destined to become. Not without its own set of challenges. It's an Acme thread with 5 TPI. I have a tool and an insert for that as I made some acme nuts a couple of years ago. The challenge being the tool is for right handed threads, and yep,you guessed it, this nut is left hand. Off to have a little play. Also need do a bit of research into Higbee starts. For those wanting to know, Higbee starts are normally used on fire hoses and other quick assembly couplings. It helps prevent cross threading, as you have a very positive start to the thread. Those of you now thinking I have gone all soft in the head as,(hopefully),once the leadscrew nut is on,it won't be coming off again ,may be slightly disappointed. Not only does a Higbee start make for quick assembly,it also tends to wipe the horse exhaust off the thread as it goes. So ,seeing grinding produces a lot of horse exhaust as a bi product, keeping your nuts clean can only be a good thing......

Higbee thread Right. Grinder update. Have pretty much made up my mind with this grinder, that it's going to have all its slideways reground. Fits in with my ethos of do something proper like or leave your dirty paws off of it... Window of opportunity to get this done is roughly six weeks away. There are a couple of things that need to get sorted out before this. The rear slide where the wheelhead pivots on needs repairing. Need to make a new leadscrew nut. There are a couple of other bits that need attention. Off to hunt down an old brake disc and a manhole cover, as, we all know that's what is required to repair old grinders....
