Not a lot happening on the car front. A lot on the go at the moment, what with work being busy and trying to get the garage sorted. Got the lights all done and moved onto the plug side of things. Evening three. All going swimmingly. I had bought 1.5mm cable for the lights and 2,5mm cable for the ring main for the plugs. Got half way round the garage, round all the tight bends, through the chicane ,and onto the home straight, or so I thought. Chequered flag in sight. Woo Ho! NOT......
Ran out of cable. How odd. Can't be that far out with my measuring stick, even if it has shrunk in the cold. Looked up on the bench, and there, still all snugly wrapped up in its original packaging was the 2,5mm cable. Picked my dummy up off the floor. Put most of my toys back in my cot. Switched off the swanky new lights, locked the door and went and washed my dummy off......

Mojo for the Elicktrickery install for the garage has really headed south. Not looking forward to ripping all the cable out,but hey, needs to be done. Can't see myself getting back onto the side panels until the Easter weekend. So....as a bit of a mojo boosting exercise,I decided to have a bit of a play with the three rotor project. I know I said that was on hold until the body work was finished, but an opportunity arose, and hey,I needed a pep up. I had a job that involved a long 12mm milling cutter, that couldn't decide whether it wanted to live or die having finished the job. Cutter a bit too mullered to have resharpened, but marginally too good to throw away. So, death or glory.... I put up an old rotor housing And gave it a thorough talking too. Bearing in mind it's 80mm thick,I was suprised the poorly cutter survived all the laps of interrupted cuts, all the way through. Was left with this.... And this Hehehe. I feel a mini project on the horizon. Time for a bit of research,me thinks. Wonder where the closest garden centre is........?

Got to say you have a most enlightened company to work for when it comes to doing your own stuff in your own time, makes a nice change from people having to risk getting into trouble.

Yes I am fortunate. But, long term they benefit as I have learnt so much on this project and tried machining things in different ways. A couple of things done on here have had direct spin offs at work. So everybody wins.....

a couple of things done on here have had direct spin offs at work. well they are getting 30% more £return from the scrap man for starters

30p maybe, defo not percent.. Way the scrap price is at the moment,it s not worth the wear on you shoes to walk around to the skip....

Yeah. These days you need to call the scrappy and beg him to empty the skip.... Weird times!

Yeah. These days you need to call the scrappy and beg him to empty the skip.... Weird times! Bizarre. But the price of raw material doesn't come down. Hence the next little mini project......

Its the same here in NZ. Scrap metal aint worth the effort collecting but its still cheaper to sell it than having to pay for the council to take it away.
Are the cast steel inners a shrink fit into the alloy or was the alloy cast around them? I have seen a Mazda video about how they are built but I cant remember.

You realise the suspense is killing me........
I have second guessed a few options of where you are taking the mini project (guessing Mrs Bravo will be happy with it, like the gate latch )

Actually, coming to think about it, this mini project might just have an application suitable for one of your projects....

Well done that man....... this car will be totally bonkers, when are you scratch building a new diff for it? ?? Thanks Ian. Diff is on the to do list.Am being punished at the moment for breaking the Cardinal rule of car building- never throw anything away. In a moment of utter stupidity I threw that rusted housing out. Am really regretting it now. Can't find another early Hilux/ Hiace one. The early ones had proper round tubing from the centre to the outer bearing housings, so are better for shortening. The later ones are a couple of pressings welded together.I have a later one. I could have cut out the rotten bit and welded a new bit in,but oh no. That would be too easy, and I gave it as a sacrifice to icky icky per Ching, the God of skips and left socks.....Grrrrrr.... Now of course I see the error of my ways....Hindsight, what a wonderful tool. The search continues.....

Celica liftbacks use a similar axle to the HiAce, finding one of those would be again praying to the icky icky ching god while riding a unicycle round the m25

I do have a workable plan with what I have. The diff isn't a huge priority at the moment,so the search continues......

Got a bit of workshop time at last. Started off with a bit of ally tube. A bit of knurly knurly later and we have an allynyumnyum handle Much easier way of opening the press tool.... Then it was off for a bit of smurf hunting. Cooked them up and made some gravy. Closed the tool and I can now see where the high points are Ground them down. Open close. Repeat until just about ready to lose the will to live......
