Great paint Job Rian, I take it Harley approves! Will you be retoring the paintwork on the vice etc or leaving as is? Hi. Mate, thanks for the reply. Harley is a dainty thug of a cat and approves of all I do, she loves the garage, and tools. Dukey on the other hand....... Lights are on but nobody home. No, I will be leaving the vices and anvil as they are, just cleaned up and oiled a bit. They have earned their stripes over the years, and cleaning and painting them would make them pretty, but steal their age. I just need to drill a couple of hikes to fit some hooks for a couple of hammers in the RSJ. Unfortunately I forgot to add them while making it up.

Dez, let me know on here, or by PM if you want me to keep eyes open for one, they are rare, which is why I bought it, also did not have one and will be needing one when I start welding the zillions of holes in the truck bed etc. If I see one, I can get it for you if I know what you want to pay for one. (Personally feel it tops out at £3.00 for a vintage one)

yes please mate. I'm particularly after a pick and bump hammer (flat one end pointed the other) if you ever see one. ive got an interim cheapy at the mo and its just not the same. will pay more than that if its a good quality vintage one, as you say its finding them more than anything.

Dez, Is this what you call a Pick n Bump hammer? I have a thing for hammers, about four claw hammers, many others at the top of the tool board and others scattered around in places where I need them to be. Some bought new, but most are bootfair or council tip finds. Very pleased with today's plannisher for 50p though. She wanted less but I was doing well from her table.

Another council tip find, and the haft is deffo too heavy, but had the two bits and bodged them together, will keep an eye out for you, they are more common in piles of rusty tools. Nothing a bit of steel wool won't fix.

Added the tools to the stand. Also made two hooks that are attached to the underside of the bolts for hanging hammers etch from. Very pleased with the outcome of this whole stand. I guess I have now run out of excuses with the truck, and need to be getting back to messing with it, and getting some rust etc sorted.

Fair play grizz that looks the business and very useful too. I've just started reading through KiwiKev's huge thread from your link. That guy has some skills too. Love the stuff you seem to pick up at boot fairs/ find in the tip? You've definitely got an eye for spotting the treasure. I'm working on it myself, badly.
May I ask where you came across a piece of railway track? Was there more where you found it? I'd love to have a go at making the small anvil and think it would come in really handy.

Tidy job that Rian, what sort of welder did you use for the heavy stuff? Also, Kent Spitfires is the name of the county cricket team:

May I ask where you came across a piece of railway track? Was there more where you found it? I'd love to have a go at making the small anvil and think it would come in really handy. Long story...... My dad had a 6" piece when we grew up, I always wanted one. About 10 years ago, a friend brought me an 18" piece off a job he was on for some. Rail company. I cut that one in half and gave my mate Martin the other half. The skinny bit I have had for 20-30 years, there were two pieces but I gave one away about 7 years ago to someone who needed it. No idea where, but suggest contact one model steam railway enthusiasts...... They may have a lead. A few months ago, I clocked some down an embankment I walk past on my way to my local station, asked the station manager about it, he said not his department. Thankfully one of the lads who man the gates heard me, and spoke to the guys building the new siding and platform, when I came through the next week, he said they had fetched the 15" off cut out the bush and found the small piece as well if I wanted it, so the long piece was for Payl y on here, and the short piece is mine. One omer place to go is your local scrapyard/recycler....... See if they have any 200-300mm high RSJ and ask for a 12-24" length, that works very well too, also makes a great seat.

Tidy job that Rian, what sort of welder did you use for the heavy stuff? Also, Kent Spitfires is the name of the county cricket team: I have a stick welder that I used fort he wheel rim burner, and for quite a bit of the welding on the stand, but it gets hot, trips then delays work. So I used my Clarke 160 Mig welder for the base plate and the perches. In this case, both welders worked great, just the stick welder overheating is frustrating, so I switched to the Mig. I knew it was the Kent Spitfires cricket team, as the seller told me, and interestingly, it was on the radio late afternoon about a game they played. I am always happy to learn something new every day.

Thanks for that Grizz. One of my elderly customers lives just over a railway crossing so I may have to call her a visit and take a look around down the side of her garden/lane incase I strike lucky with an off cut laying around.
Will also look out for a piece of RSJ as I've seen those used before. Just really liked the shape of the railway line. It has a bit of charm to it.
