MX6 is basically a Ford Probe so should be similar...
worth getting now while they are cheap if you want an almost guaranteed rarity later on and you can store it, otherwise get the Fiat Coupe or an S14 200SX...

Back to Cougars, the cars that is. Like many cars, year and model is everything. I don't like the later years when they were a counterpart to the Thunderbird. Don't really like thenT birds of that era either. That said, early ones are emerging as an alternative to increasingly rare and overpriced Mustangs. I would gladly have one of those, in part because everyone has a Mustang. I'll just leave this here: www.staceydavid.com/projects/19427/v8-interceptor-2294

That said it's probably worth considering. Just need to decide if it's time to sell the xj, can't make my mind up every time I drive the beast I like it a bit more!

Peugeot 406 Coupe is worth considering. Good looks, nice to drive and the V6 is a peach. Others coupes could be the Mercedes CLK (230K manual or 320 with autobox) or the Volvo C70 (T5 in Saffron colour). A bit smaller is the Audi TT, but that has a pretty iconic design. I don't think the Cougar can hold its own in this company. German any good? www.autobild.de/artikel/gebrauchtwagen-test-coupes-708961.html

The Fiat Coupe looks better, will drive better, will be worth more in years to come....but it's Russian Roulette whether it will work or not. My neighbour had a Daytona Yellow 20V Turbo and it was bat$hit crazy. Is a Cougar not basically a rebodied Probe? I always thought it was a panic reaction after the Probe's soft American lines failed to convince Europeans that it was the 'new Capri' and it flopped so the Cougar was ushered in using new edge design that had proven popular on the Ka and Focus. Nope - not a single part of the Cougar is interchangable with a Probe. The Probe is based on the Mazda 626 GE/ Mazda MX-6 floorpan and running gear. Built in conjunction with Mazda in Flatrock. Cougar share most of it's bits with the Mondeo Estate rather than the saloon floorpan. Again it came off the production line in the same factory but Ford had ditched Mazda by then. It's funny you mention 'new Capri' but Ford never sold it as one - people just expected it but car design had moved on in thirty years. What actually killed the Probe off was the new Mustang in 1995 and sales tailed off in it's largest market, North America. It still took three years for them to axe it though. Over here the Probe was wrongly marketed - Ford went for the young exec market who were only ever going to buy a beemer 3 series anyway. Same with the Cougar, they missed the market and should have peddled them a bit cheaper to the average bloke in the street who wanted something a bit flash.

I had the same urge a couple of years back. My brother had owned a brand new one way back when. I bought a v6 black one for £450. Then my van died so I used it for work for 2 weeks covering about 1500 miles. It was great on the motorway but hardwork round town. Pretty good mpg for a V6. Then someone offered me a cheap V8 yank so I sold it.

I have no experience of the Cougar to share so I thought I'd try and find some inspirational modified ones. I got the impression that of all Ford's offerings of the period they are perhaps the most overlooked. This one hints at what could be, lose the front wing vent and that bonnet scoop and you've actually got a very smart thing, I even like what you can see of the interior. The only thing I have been told by people that have owned and/or driven both is that the Cougar looks better than the Puma but the Puma drives nicer and is more fun.

Never been a cougar fan to be honest, though I must admit I do keep looking at this one.
