Shortly after I managed to make a hole in the innter wing - it is a bit of a trap on these cars - the section around the engine mount is made up of three skins and if the seam sealer fails the water gets in and before you know it the inner wing needs welding for the MOT. Rust can bee seen clearly with the engine mount removed. Ground back Industrial strength plate welded over from both sides - should outlast the car And from the other side One cosmetic update was a Laguna/Espace splitter which I'd been looking for for ages.

The drivers side rear chassis leg and rear valance next to the exhaust has rusted through! Thankfully this got repaired by a couple of mates who can weld, and the car passed it's MOT today!

Been a long time since I updated this thread. I still own both cars. The grey one is undergoing more surgery to repair a rotten sill Since that photo the inner sill has been repaired and I'm sorting out the centre box section before the outer sill repair section goes back on! Compared to some projects on here it is small potatoes but as I can't weld I have to wait for my friend to help out when he can.

Thanks for the reminder on the thread, my bookmark had fallen out. Nice to read the full story on this one, your pictures really don't do it justice compared to how right it looks in person.

Cheers Vulgalour, it doesn't look very right at the moment unfortunately. Once all the welding is completed and it scrapes through its next MOT I'll probably give it a makeover. Red oxide seems to be the current favourite colour to paint it, then I'll own two red ones.

Progress is always slow with me and cars, having to work on this one outdoors doesn't help, I should have done more in the summer! Anyway here is the latest saga on the passenger side sill. The inner arch looked nice and solid but it was Ford's underbody sealer providing most of the strength and would have easily passed an MOT however: Cut more rot out and cleaned it up - can't get the grinder in there and i think my tin snips need binning as they seem to chew now rather than cut. did the same with the sill - eventually I got sound to trying to straighten up the edges - anyone who has seen me use a grinder knows that I don't do straight edges!!!! My welding mate Dave came round on Sunday and by 11.30 it looked like this Tiedied the top edge - still not finished the bottom edge of the sill or the rear inner arch area yet (or the gash I accidentally put in the quarter with the cutting disc #-o ).

A new exhaust and rear brakes later and the old shed is back on the road. Took it to it's first event since April (Drive it Day) last year on Sunday. Now I'm thinking a change of colour.

Glad to see it has survived the surgery required to party some more!

I really really like the roof! Is it red oxide or does it just look like it?

I really really like the roof! Is it red oxide or does it just look like it? Yes it's red oxide - the body was done with some 'satin red oxide' from Trade Paints who supplied the grey. Unfortunately it was a pain in the butt to apply, not wanting to go over stonechip paint and generally being awful going on - worst of all it ain't satin. the roof is Halfords rattle can red oxide over Wilkinsons Satin black water based metal paint - no complaints with either of those products.

Updates - the red oxide one is on the road (it never was off it, all through the winter) Sadly the Rio Red didn't get on the road last year, hopefully this year though.

The red oxide rat passed it's MOT last week so 12 months of motoring ahead of it!
